Statement

Halo and console eSports are both very close to my heart and roster changes are never easy. Although I loved our original team—and I thank Spartan, Aries and Shooter for all the hard work they put into the organization—, rosters like Ace, Chig, Mikwen, and Ninja do not come around very often. I am excited to see how this team performs in Halo 5 and I am certain that this ultimately makes Team Liquid a force in the Halo community.

- Caleb Anderson, Halo Team Manager

Player Statement

Team Liquid is known as a worldwide and historic brand in eSports so when they approached me about joining the organization I immediately could tell how serious they were about being a strong presence in the Halo community. I was extremely impressed with how the organization is ran and what they are looking to accomplish, so much that I just couldn't pass up on being a part of it. With that said, I'm excited to join 2 ex-teammates in Ninja and Chig alongside one of the best in Halo, Mikwen. Together I think we are serious contenders and one of the best teams in Halo 5.

- Aaron “Ace” Elam, Captain

Spartan, Aries and Shooter were dropped, Ace, Chig and Mikwen were picked up.

This kind of thing happens all the time in pro Halo - back in the glory days, rosters used to change pretty much after every MLG.

It's a smart decision. I knew nothing about Spartan or Shooter, but Ace has established himself as one of the best players in the world, Chig has been around for a long time and is very solid, and Mikwen really established himself during the Halo Reach days. Add in Ninja who can dominate on his day and you have a very solid lineup indeed to challenge the big boys - though I still think EG is far and away the best team in Halo right now.

It's just such a damn shame they have to play such an awful Halo, and can't play one of the older ones. Hopefully Halo 5 is good, but I doubt it.

For anyone that is curious: Chig and Mikwen were part of team Denial which finished 3rd in Halo Championship Series Season 2 Finals, Ace was on the legendary Halo team Optic Gaming.

Halo 5 is genuinely good. Back to Halo roots with some interesting changes, and a beta to back it up with feedback.

I wouldn't describe Optic as a legendary Halo team, they're a legendary franchise, perhaps :p Ace's real Halo credentials for me come from when he was part of that great Status Quo lineup with Flamesword, Enable and Assault. Oh, and he coached Str8 Rippin (another Halo team I would consider legendary) in their 2008 world championship finals win. And he won that ridiculous amount of money in the Halo 4 FFA against Pistola, but I don't really count Halo 4 or H2A as real Halo...

Think Ace and Chig actually teamed together back in 08 on... Believe the Hype, maybe? Or maybe they were called Breaking Point? Can't remember. My Halo historian's brain is aching.

I hope you're right about Halo 5, though. I truly do.

From what I have seen, 343 has yet to recreate the magic of Bungie's games. Unfortunately, I don't have high hopes for Halo 5. Best of luck to TL nonetheless.

Bungie isn't a literal god of game development if you take a closer look at their later titles, while 343 outside of MCC's fuck ups, has been consistently doing some good job regarding Halo 5. Namely:

Commitment to 60fps, and their technical prowess showed in that with a stable performance from analysis of the gamescom build.
Mobility, the new thruster abilities made a huge difference and added an great layer of skill ceiling.
Weapon diversity, AR/Pistol start being viable? Unheard of since CE.
Reduced aim assist: a change long overdue, let the player's skill shine.

I'm not about the thruster or diversity stuff, personally. Halo for me was always about its uniformity - 4 players, symmetrical map, starting with the same weapon, so that it was individual shot vs shot and teamwork vs teamwork, no gimmicks, nothing else. But I suppose that just comes down to preference.

Halo 5 has EXACTLY those. All the armor ability, perks, loadouts are gone, some of the feature wise things like grenade indicators are gone as well. Everything we've seen from the arena modes are all about equal starts, weapon control, map space control, skill jumps and alternate route, with the added mobility and almost no aim assist it might be the most skill based Halo ever.

Looks okay, I guess the gametypes will be refined - I prefer BR starts, and if it's pistol starts, to not have neutral BRs on the map. Shotgun as a power weapon is also a bit meh for me. Map too looked a bit icky, and I wasn't a fan of the look of the BR.

But the gameplay looks alright. More like Reach, which was far from perfect, but better. The aim assist was very apparent, which is good.

Added mobility starts to eat away at the relevance of map control, though. This is something sprint already began to do in Reach. Boost is basically a grenade-avoid button, since they were dialed up weighed against your ability to evade them with standard movement, going off sooner and larger.

imo 5 is shaping up to be possibly the least of all the evil incarnations that have dithered and withered halo since 2, with some fun new stuff that inherently destabilizes the halo formula and unfortunately downplays a lot of what makes it such a great game, competitive or otherwise.

But, with the right tuning it might be a triumphant return. I'm most excited for what vaulting adds to map design and ninja move possibilities.

I just want halo 3 with hitscan DMR and sprint ruin most maps. I just hope all those pros 343 has been talking to are not ignored and we end up with a product worth watching this team play on.

Changes make the team better overall, just a shame that spartan and shooter had to go to make it happen.

Holy shit. I stopped playing after Reach, barely looks like the same game anymore.

The new pistol is amazing, it is a completely viable utility weapon even against BR and DMR, I've seen plenty of scenarios when pros choosing to keep the pistol in favor of a BR or DMR, the weapon variety right now is fantastic.

Solid picks. Chig has always been good, and Mikwen has gotten so much better since the days he teamed with Elitest. Ace is top material of course. It's a bit sad that the Status Quo team breaks again, but Ace teaming with Elamite (Liquid's coach and his brother) is somewhat fitting.

This kind of thing happens all the time in pro Halo - back in the glory days, rosters used to change pretty much after every MLG.
Not quite since you could only change two players without losing the team's seed. But those two were swapped out a lot.
