Ok someone explain this kill/save the animals to me.
Ive been watching GDQ's since 2012, i found speedrunning through cosmo / siglemic when they had sub-50 viewers, i just dont fucking get this "in-joke" at all LOL.
Is it something to do with actual metroid fans? Since ive never played metroid maybe i dont get it because of that?

There's a part in Super Metroid where you can save animals on the planet. Takes a bit longer, but you save animals. Otherwise you leave them behind, which is faster. They made it a donation incentive forever ago, and now it's AGDQ's longest running joke.

Super Metroid's final "quest" is saving the animals while you run to the ship as the planet is about to blow. The thing is, it's not hinted at in the slightest (like everything else in that game) so more often than not you leave without saving them. For speedruns it's faster to leave (ie., kill) the animals. But cuteness of the animals is what spurs the 'save the animals' votes (plus, it's canon that Samus saves them, as they show up in Metroid Fusion, the sequal to Super Metroid).

It's not really an "in-joke", but yes it has to do with Metroid: + Show Spoiler +
In this game, after you kill the last boss, you have to leave the "dungeon" in a countdown. During that time you can save some animals or just leave them to their fate/death. And our donations choose which option the runner will take. It doesn't matter for the game but just leaving is fast ("save the frames")

Also Super Metroid is one of the most beloved games in the speedrun community...or at least it feels so. Its the only game where the credits are shown completly and everyone pauses to scream the developerteam when it shows up. ..So yes, love for Super Metroid i guess, which makes this "joke" so enormous big.
