Im unsure if someone has already made a thread regarding this. But i was just wondering if anyone knows how i can remove or delete .dat files on an xp computer? i do not have admin rights. Reason being is that, all net sites i visit are going to be logged soon, as one of my friends has already been given a warning for visiting too many sites during work! i have deleted the cookies, but i am unable to delete the .dat file for some reason.. if anyone could help that would be great! Thanks

There are numerous utilities to delete the index.dat files however most are shareware in the $20-30 price range and most require a rebooting since the index.dat is locked and can not be deleted while Windows is running. There are a number of suggestions posted on how to delete manually, such as logging in as another user and then deleting YOUR index.dat files, logging out etc. These seem to work some of the time. However, I located this free utility for you that seems to be elegant in design and allows you to delete these files without a reboot or login. Unlocker http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/ "...Ever had such an annoying message given by Windows? It has many other flavors: Cannot delete file: Access is denied There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use. The file is in use by another program or user. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. Unlocker is the solution! Simply right click the folder or file and select Unlocker..." Do check the page and try this utility. I'm particulary fond of the function of right clicking the file, unlocking and then deleting. And do check their comparison of features against a good variety of their competition. Just in case you wish to try alternatives, the competitors are all linked and noted which are free, which cost and what they are capable of deleting. Search Strategy: delete index.dat utility +free I trust my research has provided you with several options to remove your index.dat files. If a link above should fail to work or anything require further explanation or research, please do post a Request for Clarification prior to rating the answer and closing the question and I will be pleased to assist further. | ||
