This is... strangely addicting.
http://geoguessr.com/
Basically it shows you google street view images and allows you to zoom in/out, pan, and move around a little bit. Based on what you see, you're supposed to guess where in the world you can find that picture. There are 5 different images that you have to guess before the game ends, and you can start again.
Basics of the game for those too lazy to try and understand it: 1. You get an image. Look at it to find clues. 2. Left click + hold to pan around 3. Click on the arrows to move in one direction 4. Mouse wheel or +/- bar to zoom in and out 5. Once you have a guess, click on the map and press "Make guess"
Sounds simple, but some of the pictures are really hard. Some are easy, but it's fun trying to solve where you are! Try it out and share how many points you've gotten
So far the most I've gotten is 23400.
|
This is actually pretty awesome! It's also like a little peek into the world of some other place on the Earth
|
Pretty interesting and definitely strangely enjoyable. Got 9600 on my first play. It's kind of hard though because at least two of my pictures were just open fields or something and pretty much nothing unique from what I could find.
|
some of them are hard... i managed to get 6k for one pic and then a 2k for the next :|
|
The golden rule is: whenever you have no clue where you are (and there are no signs around), bet on Australia.

Actually I've only once had to guess Australia.
One random field I got was in Ukraine (which I got near enough because the copyright was in Cyrillic - big clue) and one was in the US, which I randomly guessed right.
|
Yeh Chobopeon or some other misc TL affiliate tweeted about this a few days ago, it's a really cool (and addictive) game. Most I've gotten is 11k so far.
On May 20 2013 15:07 RezJ wrote: The golden rule is: whenever you have no clue where you are (and there are no signs around), bet on Australia.
*yup so long as the land is flat, generally though I can p easily pick out Australian flora as it's quite distinctive from the US.
Other golden rule is if the place looks a bit cheap and dodgy and there's some palm trees around, it's probably not hawaii or a tropical island, but Brazil.
Also has anyone else got the random picture underwater with the turtles and coral in the Great Barrier Reef? I got it twice in one round once lmao.
It also helps to know which countries have been mapped by google, tend to get European contries pretty damn rarely (except a few Moscow).
|
I got 11314
2 of mine were really tough because they were just a really open field with nothing at all. One of them was all snow so I guessed Canada and the other one was just grass so I guessed USA. Got them both pretty close =)
|
Had some fun playing this earlier, the scoring seems a bit wonky though. Being off by about 500km seems to be only worth about twice the points of being off by over 2000, and when one is being off by one or two states, and the other puts you on another continent, that doesn't feel quite right.
|
I was just off by 1km because I've actually been to the place in the picture. Ha! Did terribly aside from that though. 6.5k of my 12k score was all on that... This is dangerously addictive, I have an exam in a few hours.
|
Love it! Playing it now! The appearance of south america and philipines confused me..
|
You got 11328 points in total. this is really neat!
|
This is pretty cool, apparently there isn't always snow in Alaska. And I somehow got Austria right even though I only found signs that were in english.
Last guess fucked me when I guessed Lousiana as Australia and got 71 points, 11048 total.
I love these bad quality desert shots where you can't even read the signs, oh well 14466 that will do, got lucky with getting a finnish location.
|
I managed 17795 with lucky cities and some google usage. Massively screwed one up and only got 200 points for it :/. Proof
|
Game finished! You got 10028 points in total.
I was in the ballpark area for each one, was always about 2000km out (the next country over lol). Not bad for someone that's only really explored Australia
|
Awww, doesn't work for mac. Poot.
|
Some of those feel close to impossible: Some town, a sign nearby in Russian. Distance between West and East Russia over 6000 km... Also, what do you guess when you have a picture with nothing around! No cars, no buildings, no hills, not even a fucking road! Just some trees... It's also fun when you get some place where you see some signs in Portuguese/Spanish. South America and Spain/Portugal are quite a bit apart...
|

One of my best plays. I found a sign that said "Perth: 557" but the only distance on that scale that I have for reference is 3000 miles across the US, so I literally stuck a piece of paper on the screen and marked it off about where I thought 557km would be, followed the major marked road East of Perth that far, and ended up 15km off, so that was a big part of it.
Also, googling stuff is cheating! It's all about your own knowledge.

Just got a picture from the Midway islands. That's in the middle of the Pacific ocean... I was "only" ~8800 km away..

Always guess Moscow imo, all the Russian one's I've had have been around there. Trees, depends what they look like, probably either Australia or Alaska though.

O fun game FIrst one i got was kinda easy, just went looking around till i saw some street names and put them into google 0.427 km from location for 6443 points, on to the next one Its verry adictive already lol hmm 2nd one was more difficult, 2000 km for 1908 points. On the first one i could go around with no limits while this one did have borders, might have been some bug with the first one as it was extremely easy.
|

I literally just got a location that had no arrows to scroll around. It's in the middle of someone's backyard and all i can do is swivel the view around 360 degrees. If google is cheating, then geoguessr is bullshit. I'm resorting to googling about tree types.

This game is so random lawl.
Got 2 within 10km in one round. The city pics are way easy compared to all the Brazil.

Yeah, just green fields are really difficult to guess, I can never tell whether it's europe or north america
Yeah, trees can tell you just about how north it is though, so that's good.

Know your flora and fauna!

Yay, finally broke 10k!
This is actually pretty fun! Also really cool to explore, in a sense. I've gotten a lot of really off ones by looking at signs around the area and putting the wrong country, e.g. Spain instead of Mexico
|
got 19,250 on my best try, but that time one of my pics was the island of Madeira. Such a tough one
|
I just got a picture with a road and trees.... nothing else. Still got it sorta right, it was in the US. It felt good.
There goes my morning!
|
32363 I found out how to cheat so I have near perfect answers. + Show Spoiler + Proof
I would estimate 6,500 as probably the theoretical highest, making 32,500 a perfect score probably.
As for legitimate playing, whenever I saw a dirt road, blindly guessing Australia would work half the time with South America being the other half :p.
|
I had some of my friends play this with me, we would write down where we thought it was on notecards and compare. It's fun to see how bad at geography we all are. My brother guessed czechoslovakia for one of them:D
|
9733 after 5/5 images first try. One of my pictures was on a fucking cruiseship. No lie, literally a picture of like the main deck inside the ship of the elevator going up and some bartenders and the help desk. Only employees in the picture so no clue what kind of "patrons" they had to guess their cities they might be visiting and no views of the ocean at all. Guessed carribean near the bahamas (actually took a couple cruises there and went with what I knew) ended up being like 200km away in Miami actually lol.
Also to the people using Google and cheating, wtf why? That defeats the whole purpose of the game. Thats like taking a trivia quiz and googling all the answers and then being proud you did so well. Supposed to guess based on your knowledge, not googling street names and signs.

A lot of my tries were around 11k. The one I got really high was because most of the stuff that showed up I had been to (Taiwan, California), or there were obvious clues like street and location names (a park in Newcastle, Australia; a Chanel store in Cannes, which shows up in GeoGuessr's map if you look for it long enough). A lot of luck is involved because some of the images have really clear clues.
|
This is fun but too random Id say. Literary every second picture is just a road with nothing to give you a clue near.

The game where I scored 23k took like 30 minutes. Even when I knew where it was I had to zoom in the map and make logical guesses to make it closer, such as road intersections, turns, road orientation, etc :p
|
11500~ is my highest so far, what I find helps a lot is looking for vehicles and what side of the road they're driving or parked on
(ie. I see Holden, left side of the road, pretty safe bet is Australia/I see a Ute, parked on the right side of the road AND the front of a nearby sign is on the right, 'Murica).
Closest guess so far was 50km's off in Norway haha, no idea how
|
9500 on my first go, I got one with a visible pound sign and one with yen. Also another with fat people and palm trees that I guessed correctly to be somewhere in California
|
10122 haha. All 5 guesses were pretty close, except i thought taiwan was japan
really fun for some reason..

|
13437 was my best score. Got really lucky on 2 of them because I found some extremely specific identifying information. I found a lake name in one and an airport name in the other. I was able to get both within 50 km because of that.
|
got just over 5k for my first go now after reading all the posts i must do better
|
Wow, got within 10 km this time thanks to finding a street name that only exists one place in the entire world. Got over 5000 points for that. 16056 new high score.
|
Seem to just be getting fields. Had one with just grass and loads of ducks...
Highest so far is 12,085 :S
|
First try got about 16,000ish. Got really lucky and my first area had a landmark sign, the second one had a flag and a city name on top of a gas station. Those two alone gave me like 12k. Managed to get a 56 or something when I thought australia was texas.

Did ok, had one REAL bad guess though. Thought medley road was South African farm area. Was like a dirt road with farm randomly so thought South Africa when it was fucking Canada fml ;_;

I clicked without even zooming in on the map on my second try with no identifying information in the picture and got 46km away. lol. First try total 12987 (no town names or anything in any picture)

I probably average something like 8k points, getting around 2k for most guesses and botch one.
I have a really hard time with Australia, sink that continent and this game would be easier

This was fun
I got 11k, completely fucked up one guess and literally went halfway around the world from the right answer. Other than that most were surprisingly close, will try a few more and see if that was blind luck lol!
|
14.19k
It helped that my first place was literally right in front of a post office that gave me the name zip code of the place, lol. Got it within 2 miles.
It's really fun to try and piece together where you are. Feel like a detective. It's kind of annoying though when you get some innocuous place clearly in like Australia or Russia which means you'll be in the right country but maybe thousands of miles off.
|
I decided to see what a "spot on" guess would be, hitting 0.023km away and got 6474 points for it.
Tried again "Your guess was 0.781 km from the correct location and gave 6413 points", so seems like max is 6500 for a single guess, if you hit 0.000km from correct location.
|
It really scales up the closer you get. A few hundred meters wil reward 6000+ points, while just being close geographically is around 2000 points. Got a statue in Barcelona and a University in the US right (few hundred meters radius), over 6000 each, but fucked up the rest so hard, that it didn't even matter :-)
This game is so much fun !
|
I went through checking road signs and intersections and shit like that... got something like 23k on my 2nd attempt (first one I just picked without thinking). Very addicting game!!
Reckon it's legit using that little map to help triangulate?

Managed to get almost 20k points. 1 was in my country s I got in down really close, it a had a street sign and everything. But I messed up the last one really bad thinking it was in australia when it was in the USA D: off by like 20k kilometers

Seems I have a hard time distinguishing between small towns in desolated areas in mid USA and Australia, probably a European thing? At least that is the majority of my "only half a globe wrong" guesses

Australia tends to be more desert in the middle and cities on the coast. I guess with those countries you could just pick the center most point you can.

30,197 on my second game. First game had two Russian cities where I guessed Moscow both times and were incredibly far off .
The second game went a lot better and looking at cars, signs, ads got me the exact city/village on four of them and the fifth was on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. Environment looked Italian and when I finally saw a farmhouse with a name sign over the letter box saying Perkovic I figured it's probably Croatia, and it was.
|
Got a pretty decent score on the second try, because I went into tryhard mode, googling every piece of info I could find, and it is pretty straightforward then. But I enjoy this game more when I just try to roughly guess where I could find such a landscape/vegetation/....
Edit: just mistook South Africa for West Coast USA and got 43 points. We should make some contests for such low scores too.

Dammit, I managed to guess wrong continent four times in one game.
|
See korean letters. Bet on Seoul. 4,4km from the correct location :p
|
first one that had a sign in hungarian, and luckily i can read hungarian. so i was pretty close. second was a house and a bushy streat with subtropian /mediterrian vegeation and sea with clouds in the background. i guessed south africa, it was hawai. third was a street in the middle of nowhere with boreal vegatation. i guessed it was finland, but it was somwhere in canada. 4th was a street in the middle of nowhere with betula pendula wood vegatation, frost-dmgd streets and yellow street markings, i guessed it was in northern sibiria. It was somewhere in north usa 5th was leftdrivers in a town wich had a shield "victoria place", i guessed somewhere in the middle of england, it was north scotland though.
somehow funny, whenever there is no language evidince, and there is just nothing but a street and trees, no vehicles, nothing, i think it might be very norhtern europe / asia, and always is usa / canada. Seems like the author of this is american.
|
~19k is my high score so far, I guessed one in Seoul within 2.8km but my best was 60m, wasn't really fair though since it was at the border between South Australia and Northern Territory, there was only one road between them

I feel like Australia is thoroughly over-represented, which suits me fine. I'm getting about one Aussie screen per set, and keep going "That really looks like a gumtree. Surely not... again?" I had one that was literally a couple blocks from a place we go on holiday every year. Got it to within like 20m.
Personally, I'm hating on Canada/Alaska right now. I can work out I'm up there somewhere, but because I click the wrong end of the endless wilderness I still get like 1000 points. I guess everyone else feels that way about Australia. Also, freaking Brazil and Mexico. Every single time, whichever it is, I pick the other. Every. Damn. Time.
I've decided not to google stuff, and to give myself a maximum of 5 steps down the street. More fun that way.
|
Only had Australia once so far and it was a totally random place in the middle of nowhere. Luckily I kinda guessed by the vegetation where it was and was really close. Totally the game for me, love it Big geo nerd and traveller!! Russia totally messes me up though.

Holy shit, i just got some random place near lake and there was a sign in something seemed swedish or similar language. I clicked a random place in Sweden and i was 0,9km away from the target. Also i got a starting point with a diection sign saying Dildo.
|
Got 12.5k, though I did have to walk around quite a bit. Got kinda unlucky too. I got a coastal town somewhere in the UK. Guessed Scotland, because there were some hills around, turned out it was Torquay. FML. Guessed Transilvania (Western Romania) correctly based on architecture and terrain alone, so that was pretty cool.
Next time I'll play with a 5 minute timer.

20170 without external aid. It's easy when the location is right in front of a federal post office in the US. Had to work harder for the one in Finland, though, but managed to land the guess 10 meters from the target.

Got 10444. You're right. This is kind of addictive. I guess it's because we're all somewhat interested in seeing our world.
Second try 5365. Literally didn't even guess the right continents 4 times.

Oh my god, so I'm a Geography major and this is basically the best thing ever. Closest I've gotten was 1.6 km in a lightning round (You can't move from your initial spot) and I saw a French sign on a German building. Guessed central Strasbourg, gg no re.
I challenge anyone to beat my most recent Lightning Round score (again, no moving, zooming and panning are allowed) of 10745.

Best score was 19000 with 0 cheating. but i was allowed to move around and stuff... Got one that was withing like 50 miles, I found an intersection for a highway in Ohio where 3 different interstates connected. One was the convention center in cancun mexico got within 50 miles again (street signs OP).
others were a Fishing Harbor somewhere in Northern Europe, only got like 3k for it, One was a port city in Australia, 5th one was somewhere in china.

I got a 10k but it would've been higher if it hadn't been for some freaking tiny island in the south pacific with funky plants in a garden. Could've been anywhere.

Australia always fucks me over. Always click somewhere in the US and screw up...
Closest I got was a couple of 100 meters, some sign said something about Orkney Island Tailor or something, just went for kirkwall and BOOM!
Russia can also be somewhat of a lottery... You can see it's somewhere in siberia, but "somewhere in siberia" isn't very precise :D

The urge to not actually cheat goes way down when all you get is dirt roads and forests in the middle of nowhere.

Over an hour spent for one round, this is kinda addictive :D Small japanese roads, some place on Scotland shore and so on are pretty hard to find out precisely.

It's an old Hawaiian King I believe.
Without any googling and just spending 5 minutes at work, I managed to get one within 50 miles because it was obviously in Japan. Besides that I thought Ukraine was the midwest of the US, England was in mainland Europe, South Africa was Australia, and the east coast of the US was the west coast of the US.

I don't see how using google and visiting websites that you encounter on the pictures is cheating. It's merely .. a different category, like in speedrunning. It's a very interesting detective work, and over this hour I spent looking for hints I even learned stuff from those locations.
As for legit cheating like doing the same places more than once, I did not do that, this is 100% first try.

There should totally be different game modes, like no using internet/no moving/speedguessing (must guess in under 30 secs) XD

What I found funny is that I could tell that the pictures was from US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, or Japan just by how high resolution the images were. Australia certainly screwed me over several times before I picked up on that.

What a sick game of detective work. Google maps and google search is your friend though. I hate when I get clear names of streets or towns but they're in a language that uses cyrillic or some character based language because I just have no hope of ever deciphering it. I just spent 20 minutes following this road in Alaska a little down Route 2 outside of Anchorage through the Tanana Valley State Forest on both google maps street view and geoguessr, trying to find a point of comonality because I couldn't make out the damn sign next to the bridge of the creek near where I started. Got within .5 km though. High score so far is ~24221.

I mean you obviously used coordinates and cheated the system like people have figured out. There was no guessing or trying to zoom in on random objects to get clues. You had perfect guesses on all 5 and had almost perfect scores, whats the point in that? Anyone can do that was my point.

No. No coordinates were used. I used Google and msn maps. I found street names, landmarks, rivers, bridges, phone numbers on billboards and backtracked to my original location. Clicking the stupid forward button for 15 minutes. I did plenty of exploring to find out where i was. I dont speak/read Japanese, Spanish, and the language of Finland. Anyone can get lucky even when they are aiming at the the right general area. I did that for awhile but lost interest because its so random. But to actually be able to figure out where you are takes some work. The fact that you call it cheating though is actually weird. There were no rules. Why impose such a silly rule on yourself?
|
My best non-cheating score is 17,572. I was very lucky when guessing and their was a place in my city so i was within 0.013km of it
My worst score is 5216 lol just once was I inside 2000km lol

So, I look at a picture of South Africa, think it's South Africa, decide it's New Zealand. Turns out I was right the first time, lol. 4.4k points FML.
|
15,5k on my best try, i was actually really lucky because i got Prypjat and was only 700 meters away =p
Why impose such a silly rule on yourself?
Because what is the point of playing the game if you just click until you find a street sign and then just google the name? :o
|
Ya, this game is pretty awesome and addictive. I'm usually very close on latitude but sometimes on the wrong continent, lol. It's fun looking for things that might be clues, road signs, license plate style, etc.
|
well i cheat, i look for road signs lol 21.1k
|
My best is around 19k and that is with no google-ing!
The rules which i go by is you can drive around a little to find clues, but from there all you can do it zoom in on the world map given to make your choice. That particular time i got extremely lucky with a couple highly populated areas and close guesses
|
Hm yeah there should be a consistent set of rules.
You guys are just amazing though lol, maybe it's just because I didn't spend as much time as you guys, but I haven't gotten nearly as high as you guys have.
|
1 click in either direction looking at the cars and which side of the road they drive on (and the quality of the road) I got 9797.
I dont think it is proper to google names on signs or click a mile until you find something.
|
this game is really addicting
|
Hahah this game is fun, but I share the sentiments of others: There needs to be set rules or something, like max clicks (so you can't just travel 1km and look at some signs), no Googling, no retaking the same challenge-- basically no cheating. And there's just no way to enforce that.
Still fun to kill some time and see how bad you are at geography, though.
|
When there is just mountains and 1 road, it's impossible to know, you can only guess, and then it can be so far apart...so no, I didn't like it much, the only thing you can go by is text, really. Also, the season when the pictures were taken has a huge impact.
|
On May 25 2013 09:29 Aylear wrote:basically no cheating.
So mean to call it 'cheating'.
I enjoy using google maps and seeing if I can actually recreate the exact street view. I just think of it as a different 'game', but still a very fun one imo (feels like newbie level detective work). Granted, I'm not going to try and pass off my score as if I did it without using google, but I wouldn't look down on it either gg.
To me, it is like calling TAS 'cheating'. Saying that 'well anyone can make a TAS'. I respect both RTA and TAS and enjoy the different aspects of each. I use google maps with this to aim for 'perfection'.

Yeah got one of those. There was some "help" as the words norteno was spray painted on a rock. So I thought it had to be somewhere between CA and NV. My clue being the Mexican gang norteno but based in USA.Norteno means north in spanish. The picture ended up being from southern Mexico.

This is amazing, this round I just got put underwater in some coral reef surrounded by turtles :o

It's always Australia.

It seems very pointless. The information given is not sufficient to make a real guess. Like for example if you end up in Brazil and you guess Portugal because the housing and climate (+ signs on the street in Portugese) looks like it, well grats, there are similar places all over the world.

It's just a fun guessing game bro.

It was :D

Hmm. 20,675 points on the first round. But I was "exploring the world", by which I mean I looked at signs, people, and then tried to figure out what fit. Only after I figured out what country, though, and yes... when it's empty and looks like Kansas, it's actually Australia.
|
Yeah I can see spinoffs or new versions of the game with time limits and click limits.
Very entertaining as it is though, I've spent plenty of time today playing it.
|
This is really weird, I found a Japanese copy-attempt of what seems to be Utrecht (a city in the Netherlands here) :D
|
Oh god, I've been playing this game a lot for a week now, I really love it. My record so far is 20846. Whenever I see a road with nothing around, I'm praying to got the good one of the Holy Trinity : USA, Australia, South Africa.
The most funny places where I've been were inside a random restaurant (don't remember where, I miserably failed) and Stamford Bridge. Closest location : 1 meter, in a french village. It must be because I'm French but I find France the easiest country by far as there are signs pretty much everywhere. On the other side, when I know I'm in Russia/USA/Canada/Australia/South Africa/Brazil/Mexico, I know I'm screwed.
Oh and Alaska is very annoying too. :o
|
Get a new picture, look down the street, see a giant sign that says "WELCOME TO KETCHIKAN ALASKA!"
I think your score is mostly dependent on how many town spots you get (assuming fair play).
|
4/5 within 300km Last one not so close, 7800 brazil->mexico.
Well all 3 games above 10k points and best 11464. Pretty luck based though, get sign that says "nevada" and u'll hit close, russian/spanish and it's probably within 10k km.
|
Almost 24k. I got sorta screwed on the last one, it was in the middle of nowhere (no, not Australia ) and the few leads I got were false.
|
|
I managed a 0.041km "guess." There was a sign for the name of a beach in Florida, very clear, right next to a bridge that was not hard to find on the map at all.
|
|
I'm awful at this but it's so intriguing
|
Got like 11k points on first try. Got like 2 or 3 forest roads with no signs/writing whatsoever haha. Put one in Canada and it was actually in Finland :o
|
Australia has very unique flora so i don't think it should be that difficult to at least get the country right. I love getting South Africa as well, easy points for me as I've been there a few times, the Afrikaans road signs are an obvious giveaway, along with the scenery. Russia is just annoying, such a gigantic country and I can't even google tryhard placenames etc as they're in really weird language, and then the odd time it's Ukraine and not Russia.
|
14201 on my first try. Got lucky with a city in Alaska where the name of the city was in the picture
|
Holy shit this game is a lot of fun hahahaha
I didn't realise you could actually move the street view either (someone said earlier you couldnt) so i didnt try... i got a few over 10k without moving the camera but now that i realise you can do that, it kinda takes the fun a bit cause you can just go for miles and miles till you get a sign haha.

That is the BANE of this game. Canada countryside looking exactly like European countryside.
|
I got 12k first try. It turns out that south africa, australia, and west texas all look exactly alike. Or as a true texan I should say, south occupied texas, that other place with steak, and texas look exactly alike.

My Score. Over 8k, first try. Tries afterwards were 4k-6k ._.
edit: And the one in Europe was a bunch of fenced in church buildings where I started on a sundial and the only sign was facing away from me. No arrows. D:
|
So I think for rules you should not be allowed to move from your location at all. Just look aroud it and zooming
|
5774 points (first attempt). I need to get out more..
This game will be so easy for any botany geeks.
|
|
I just spent about 30 minutes going super tryhard, and was able to get 26k. Including one that was closer than 0.1km away. Just messing around on a few less serious attempts, the Russian signs, and middle of no where plains/mountains/forests/etc, are really annoying. D: Edit: This was with very heavy google usesage. Including one of the locations making me link a transportation trucking company with a random chain restaurant. Lol. This is pretty fun though. Best I've done without google is like 13k.

If you are still having fun playing GeoGuessr, you might be interested to know that its port has just been released to the Android platform.

Not confident about necroing the thread but I love Geoguessr, been playing way too much of it lately.
Especially if you play it in no moving mode, it's a game that is well designed in that it rewards playing it a lot. You start out and it's kind of dumb, how are you supposed to know anything it's just a patch of grass, whatever. You guess Mexico and it's Turkey or Brazil. Being wrong doesn't really feel bad because how are you supposed to know anything. After a while you start to notice some stuff, and you start making good guesses, and that feels absurdly good in comparison to how little being wrong feels bad.
After a while you kind of develop a feel for most places. It's hard to describe how it works but you can be dropped in some random countryside site and think "this looks like Ukraine" and be right. I'm not at a point where I'm confident yet but I'm starting to get some decent scores overall. The people who have Youtube channels for this game are ridiculous at it.
I recommend playing a map like A Diverse World rather than the actual World map, because the World map puts you a lot in places that are stupid: a lot of rural Russia just looks exactly like everywhere else in rural Russia to me, same with forest Russia (Russia sucks really :p), or Brazil. I struggle with North of US vs Alberta/Saskatchewan as well, and you get that a lot. A Diverse World is better because you are rarely in those huge places; it's frustrating to "know that this is Russia", find out that it is indeed Russia, and you still made 1800 points out of 5000 because you were kind of in the right part of Russia but not really.
Some stuff that I noticed:
+ Show Spoiler + If you can see the sun, check out if it's north or south. North is southern hemisphere, south is northern hemisphere. Southern hemisphere you want to know if people drive left or right, if it's right it's South America, if it's left it's South Africa/Botswana, Australia or Tasmania/New Zealand.
In cold/northern forest stuff, yellow lines on the road is North America, white lines is Sweden/Finland, no lines (or bad quality road) is Russia.
You can only get Germany in very big cities so don't guess in the german countryside, that's gonna be Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark or Poland most likely.
Similarly you won't get India or China, so if you're in South Asia it's Bangladesh or Sri Lanka (good luck on that one, you can try and figure out if there are a lot of muslims maybe, that's Bangladesh) and if you get some chinese script you want to think Taiwan or Malaysia.
If you get something random like the inside of a building, check out the name of the person who has the copyright at the bottom right, it won't be Google. From their name you might figure out where in the world they're from, it's not foolproof but it's something.
If you're playing Diverse world and you get some countryside with absolutely zero mountains in Europe, you're in the Baltics 95% of the time.
If you're in Africa and there's a police car following the Google car, you're in Nigeria.
If the google car is blurred in a way that is easily visible on the picture and it looks south american, you're in Guatemala. If the google car is blurred in a way that is easily visible on the picture and it looks like a desert in the northern hemisphere, you're in Kyrgyzstan.
If you get some cyrillic try and see if there's a vowel repeating itself near the end of words because that's gonna be Mongolia.
Images of poor quality (World map) are either in the center of the US (Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas, sometimes south Illinois/Indiana) or anywhere in desert Australia.
If someone has tips for narrowing down US small city stuff that would help me quite a lot, I frequently guess somewhere in the South when I was in Ohio or something.
|
There's also a lot of maps (an extraordinary world, abandoned places, dams of the world and so on) that place you in some very interesting places (though there's a lot of photospheres there).
It's a fun game for groups of people since fringe knowledge can come in useful. Like maybe one person knows Brazilian phone codes, or someone can recognize the colour of license plates from different us states.
US small city stuff can be tough. The best indicators are probably vegetation. Like the West coast has more evergreens, Florida and the neighbouring states have palm trees, the prairies are pretty recognizable and so on. If you're really try-hard you can learn about US highway signs: https://somerandomstuff1.wordpress.com/2019/02/08/geoguessr-the-top-tips-tricks-and-techniques/ .

Some really helpful stuff in there, thanks

Put my two best games yet on Youtube because why not. I'm not a great player yet but I think I'm getting there.
