Some interesting points: "Based in the webseries universe" "Going back to our guerrilla film style roots" "possibly go to korea, involve real pro gaming"
For those of you who are not familiar with Pure Pwnage may still remember Jarett from casting Frag for Mental Health and hosting IEM Cologne.
Pure Pwnage was a popular web series mockumentary about the life of a pro gamer. It started in 2004 and later became a short lived TV show. For anyone interested I would consider episodes 1-5 of the webseries required watching. (Youtube)
Hello, Jarett. Thanks for sitting down with us. It's been eight years since the first episode of Pure Pwnage and four years since the end of the web series, so would you like to describe the show to those who might not have been familiar with it?
So Pure Pwnage—I hate to say it was the first [web show] because out there someone might say “No, my little brother had this thing before,” but it was the first internet series way back in 2004, so pre-YouTube and pre-streaming media. Back when you wanted to distribute that kind of data, that kind of content, you had to use files—we used BitTorrent back then. But it was a long-form, T.V.-style show that we made very cheaply, me and Geoff Lapaire, about our own culture at the time, which—when the show first started we were both addicted to Command & Conquer Generals. I played it competitively, like in clan wars, and he played a lot, but not competitively. I'd just moved to Toronto, so he was my only friend and we would get together and all we would talk about was C&C Generals And then we wanted to make a show where we would talk about C&C Generals, sort of like, you know, the modern equivalent of podcast or something. But we were going to film it and we were going to just distribute AVIs to this forum called C&C Replays and instead by accident we took some footage of me pretending to be a huge douchebag from the forums and we put that on the web after when we thought it was funny. We posted it the forum site and they thought it was funny and hosted it for us, and it sort of took off from there. So it sort of just organically grew into this internet television show that we hadn’t set out to make in the first place. It was just a show about our own culture, about C&C Generals and then we expanded into other cultures that we knew or we used to be in or start to becoming into as we got out of Generals, like getting into World of WarCraft or Counter Strike, and we brought in some of our friends who wanted to be actors and stuff and made them into characters and so we organically developed a T.V. show and it got way bigger than anyone, especially us, could have predicted.
You're the main character in the series -- a fictional professional gamer who lives the life of someone that plays games and hangs out with his girlfriend all the time. Why the name 'Jeremy' and who's idea was it to wear the bandana?
The show essentially started by accident; there was zero planning put into Jeremy's initial wardrobe. That Ubergamer shirt was a gift from a friend prior to moving Toronto and was my favorite shirt. I happened to be wearing it the day we filmed our 'test footage'. I was wearing a bandana because I had longer hair then and used it to keep the hair from falling in my eyes while pwning n00bs in Generals. I ddn't usually wear it outside of the house unless I hadn't showered in a long while and wanted to hide the grease. Such was the case the first time we filmed. Gross but true.
Not sure what to think. Early PP was pretty good. Season 2 kinda lost it and the er...the TV series...well it wasn't as bad as I'd heard but didn't have the magic.
That's interesting. Last I heard (a couple years ago), "Kyle", the co-creator of the show was no longer involved with it so Jeremy didn't want to continue. Has he come back ? In any case, good news. I'll go rewatch the first episodes, it's been a long time. :D

what , what , WHAT HOW WHEN WHAT ?!?!?!?! THIS IS GOING TO BE SO AMAZING SO EXCITED
this is like the best show ever created it ended on such a cliff hanger ( for reasons that are very sad and shall not be said , ) i really hope they pick up where they left off kinda , that would make everyones day AWOSMELYAMAZING !
holy shit, this project has the potential to be sooo amazing. Just imagine if this is a collab between MLG and the major tournaments of the pwnerer traveling as a progamer.
It would give SC2 SO MUCH EXPOSURE, this thing would EXPLODE with the purepwnage following
I almost puked from the shock, this is how incredible this is...
My favorite part of this is that the OP's name is Scudstorm ;D We can tell why you posted this first. I seriously almost pissed my pants of excitement when I first saw the video this morning. Pure Pwnage is honestly my favorite show along with DBZ, and fresh prince of bel-air :D So to see the show coming back, it honestly makes me know that the next however many years of my life will be filled with happiness!
used to be a fan of the show, i guess a combination of misfortune and new opportunities turned the show to a new direction rather than sticking with the "subculture within subculture" theme, and the reality of gamers (exaggerated or not) before the "esports" flagship. really enjoyed the creative elements of the old show, felt really raw, all of it felt kind of scripted once he went TV.
I enjoyed the cheesy storylines of the later half of PP, but I'd like to see a return to the mockumentary style. I always loved seeing Jeremy be all naive and relating everything he saw to video games (Like how he loves dogs because they're a great unit in RA2).
I don't mind PP going either direction though. Just prefer one over the other.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense for Apollo to actually say in a cast, I can't imagine a real Starcraft caster saying something like that, so my money's on it being recorded for the show. Which would be pretty awesome, if he restarts it using SC2 as the game in focus like Red Alert used to be in the original series. I hope we at least get some closure with the myriad dangling storylines left by the last webisode. Haven't seen the TV series so I don't know whether that continued the storyline or not.

It'd be pretty appropriate, as Jeremy has said in interviews something like if he could go back, the one thing that he'd change would be that his character would be into Starcraft instead of Red Alert. Starcraft was always the game he was more into, but he just happened to be playing a lot of Red Alert at the time when they started filming the show.
The TV show doesn't follow the same story at all; it basically starts at the beginning.
I feel like I would have liked this show if I had watched it when it was new but now it's just not doing it for me. Is it mostly the nostalgia factor for people?
I noticed it was uploaded by KylePP, an account I assume under the control of Geoff. Hopefully this means they're on good terms again and ready to push forward with the series!
I then noticed I was wearing a PP shirt already :D
I don't think they were on bad terms, Jarrett said in an interview somewhere that Geoff just didn't want to do it anymore after the "failure" of the TV series or something.
PP fundamentally changed my life in an irrevocable way. There would be no starcraft or any of the vague permutations that have occurred without them. Life would be so fucking different right now if it wasn't for PP.
And the awesome thing is that I wouldn't have it any other way, thank fuck my cousin introduced it to me on that fateful day in 2004.

You left out League of Legends.
And tennis and pacman! Not that it is really relevant. If this is slightly related to their former webseries, then Jeremy will NOT play a team game like LoL, DotA, or a team FPS, but almost certainly a RTS. The obvious choice would be SC2, especially as PurePwnage moved to BW for their tv-series and Jarett has been associated with a couple of SC2 events and the teaser vid has a produced clip of Apollo casting someone with 1000apm (obviously Jeremy playing).
Personally, I loved where they were going with the webseries. The ridiculous micro battles and the idea that there was some sort of hidden gaming world...I was into it. I know a lot of people wanted it to focus more on just a guy playing games and being funny, but the weird fantasy element that made being a leet gamer something of a super hero was really fun. The episode where he takes phone calls from both Moon and Grubby had me, being big in wc3, lol'ing pretty hard back in the day.
The idea that gamers basically have anime-esque power levels through micro is awesome = O
This is so awesome, please please please let this happen.
When I was younger and didn't have any friends, t3h_pwnerer was basically my friend for a good 2 years before I realized how to communicate with people IRL.
I loved PP back in the day. As far as I know the reason they stopped with the web show was when their friend who played T-Bag in the show died in a car accident in real life.
Ive heard multiple times about the series potentially returning over years so as much as I am hoping that this one comes to fruition I will believe it when I see the episode in my browser.
think I heard about starcraft for the first time on their site... Yea it def influenced my life quite a bit. I gotta agree I liked the early episodes more, I hope its going to be similar to that if they do something new.

Maybe it has been too long...
Go rewatch season 2 ep 1. After the negative comments on the "micro" magic they came back old school. That episode is amoungst the best.
I'm glad to see it comming back, absolutly best web serie ever.
Day 1: HYPE By FAR bet web show! I want it to go back to the Web show, same old GF, some more cooking with Dave, and some TF2, SC2, Dota 2 and CS:GO play. RIP T-Bag.

Not nearly that. I was curious myself and looked at what was donated at 3 points to see how much people donate: 2:46am - $4195 3:00am - $7145 3:43am - $17294 This works out to about $13000/hour. Obviously this will shrink over time, but I would be surprised if they didn't have $100k this time tomorrow.

Well they did say that there goal was to raise 75k which was only half of what they would need but it looks like at this rate the second half will be covered as well.

To be honest, I think the 100 dollar donation for a signed script seems like it could be a fantastic investment. I mean, these guys KNOW how to make a gamer movie, 25 years down the road, a signed script could probably sell for a decent bit I would think, maybe 500 or a thousand bucks if the movie takes off like I hope it will. That's just speculation of course, I dunno how ebay stuff like that works.
Not sure if it'll end up being more than a cult classic but I absolutely remain hopeful. Gonna donate some to this for sure and if it looks like it's getting somewhere, I will throw in a hundred bucks for the script.

Yeah this is definitely worth pledging some cash for. I pledged $25. I think it's reasonable given I never really donate to anything else other than the humble indie bundle. Can't wait to see what they do!
Nobody expects high quality content from them. In fact, high quality content would go against the mockumentary style that made the series such a huge success. I want more of THAT. They don't need $75k for that, let alone $150k. As they have pointed out themselves all they need is a borrowed camera. I'm sad to see that their passion has in fact gone.
I supported them when I purchased their merchandise. This, however, is a scam. Jarett and Geoff are sell-outs.

Are you fucking kidding me? Jarrett lives in LA (married with a kid), Joel and Geoff elsewhere in Canada/USA, Dave is off in Africa, and they need to be able to pay bills, fly around and meet up, find locations and film. Their goal is to go to S.Korea and film (this also helps sc2 and esports!). In addition, post-production and soundtrack take a lot of time and effort.
This is hardly selling out, they are looking to create something for the gaming community which they helped create and popularise. Your attitude is a disgrace.

If you look at the perks on indiegogo they already plan to sell more products after release, which no doubt will earn them plenty of cash. On top of that they are asking for $75k up front, which even under generous estimations greatly exceeds the budget for all previous episodes of the web series put together. It's simply ridiculous to believe they need that money to make what will amount to another episode or two.
That's why to me it seems like they just want to cash in on the franchise they have created. I don't blame them for that, but it does make them sell-outs.

Those dirty dirty sellouts who wants us to contribute so they can make a movie without selling out.
I think you're greatly underestimating how much it costs to actually make a movie. Sure you can do it with a burrowed camera with 4 friends on location. But actually doing stuff takes cash. And yes, they probably expect to be able to eat while doing this as well.
Oh boy i really want to donate to this. I checked their forums about 2 months ago to see if there was any discussion of a kickstarter happening, so this is great news!

If you are going to do multiple locations then you require travel money in addition to the food and board for cast and crew and thats just assuming they use only 2 locations (main area and SK)

He mentions trying to cover FPS, MOBA and RTS games.
The competitive FPS scene has been dead for years. "MOBA" games hardly qualify as proper esports and cater towards the casual crowd anyway.
It's going to be really hard for them to make those two seem authentic with Jeremy's character.
I can't imagine Jeremy taking LoL seriously or Doug lowering himself to play CoD.
Have they mentioned fighting games at all? That scene has exploded since SF4 (which even had a camo in the web series) and Dawei is supposed to be huge in that genre.

maybe you would prefer it if they sold their house, paid for the movie themselves, then donated the proceeds to charity

I don't blame them for that, but it does make them sell-outs.
if just 1 in 37 viewers of the show donates $1 they have raised $80,000
maybe you would prefer it if they sold their house, paid for the movie themselves, then donated the proceeds to charity
i mean jarret's wife would probably leave him if she heard he was going to quit work, fuck off and make a movie for 6 months for less than $20k. you'd have to be mad to call them sellouts, or at least have no idea what living in the real world is like
They aren't going to take that much time. 6 months are more than 1440 hours if you convert it into work days. That's a ridiculous amount of time for such a project. While the time span might turn out to be accurate if they would take their time, the effort and hours required just don't add up. We can safely assume that it took them less than 50 hours of work to make an episode. So in that time they would be able to make 28 episodes. We're looking at a much smaller figure than that.
Add to that that they're condoning a game like LoL which is as casual as it gets in online games but coincidentally is sporting great profit and I'm having a really hard time not considering them sell-outs. If they really wanted to create something for the esports community they would take it back to its roots and not jump on the most profitable, most fraudulent ship in the sea.
Segata Sanshiro would question them deep inside their hearts.
Ultimately, I loved the original series. What's more, I downloaded it all for free. I've never given them a cent of my money. Have you ain? Why all the bitterness?
Seems to me that sending a few bob their way isn't going to hurt me none. The result might not be great, but who knows.. they might blow us all away with awesomeness. Wouldn't that be fantastic?

You have absolutely no idea what goes into making a movie or show. A 20 minute episode likely took them hundreds of hours, not under 50. Don't make uneducated assumptions. Incidentally, calling them sellouts because they're making something that involves e-sports and including the most popular e-sport of the moment is absolutely ridiculous.
The people just above me are making reference to them "condoning" LoL and things of that nature. No idea what that would mean other than LoL is getting treatment in the storyline.
Yeah I didn't mean to imply the movie would be about LoL. Jarett could be seen wearing a LoL T-Shirt in some promo videos and also mentioned he loves playing LoL. It's not a big deal, but I'm afraid it might affect the movie. A LoL playing Jeremy is the last thing I'd want to see.

75K to shoot a feature is a moderate amount. I've shot shorts and B-Horror films with budgets as low at 10K, but considering what they want to do with this. Their goal was reasonable if you ask me. Just cross your fingers that it turns out better than their Showcase series.
in that teaser video people were speculating about d.apollo recording that for the show.
history lesson:
d.apollo was the GOD of cnc3, and was a large part of the other cnc games. he's a multiple WCG winner and is referenced a lot even in the early episodes of PP
the cnc community was historically mostly on cncreplays.org (later renamed to gamereplays.org) where PP originally came from. as well as myself, both apollo and jarrett cale of pp were constantly on their as well.
its just so fitting. I hope apollo sees this thread and comments!

woha sweet, i had no idea about this bagground stuff thanks for informing about the early early days of the beginning of something turning out to be unforgetable :D
The TV series wasn't up to par with the webseries because corperate interest, not because Geoff and Jarrett lost their Mojo. I for one am absolutely baffled by the amount of support the have received and had I known of this earlier I would've donated a couple bucks for sure. This is actually one the best news I heard in a LOOONG time, and I'm super pumped how this will turn out.
For the LOL thing; Jarrett once said, if he could rewrite the whole webseries he would've made Jeremy a Starcraft player. So I expect Jeremy to be a SC2 player, with Doug being the FPS guy, they probably introduce another character that will fill in as the LOL player. I could imagine a plot like when Jeremy first met Anastasia and then started getting lost in the WOW world or something similar to that.
ROFLMAO Productions posted up a trailer a couple of weeks ago. no one posted it so here it is. it states the full movie arrives SUMMER 2015.
the arguing in the youtube comments is more entertaining than the trailer... i'm not sure if it is art imitating life or life imitating art.

he was top notch for a very short time with some very specific builds and tactics. overall, i'd have to say Technique is the best modern day (2003+) C&C player by a pretty wide margin. TheGunRun would be a good guy to ask about this.
that said, Apollo is full value for his accomplishments as an SC2 broadcaster. IMO, only Artosis is better.
I mean when most of us were watching Pure Pwnage the internet was young (pre-Youtube) and we hadn't even heard of Pro Brood War. Most of us couldn't drive a car, and the idea of novel hyper-targeted entertainment media delivered through the internet was still super wild. I'll never forget it.
Pure Pwnage was great at the start and just slowly got worse because its hard to turn it into an ongoing series. Very similar to the "Chad Vader" comedy series in that way. The initial hook is really cool and eventually it loses steam as you pile on the episodes.
i hope i'm wrong and this movie turns out to be as hilarious as web episode 1. i think it'll be a 5/10 though.
oh god i keep forgetting and re-remembering this is happening. I actually loved the TV series that lasted 1 season. I don't typically watch north American television, but it was a treat.
what I wouldn't kill to see a jaedong cameo in the movie lol.
noob school bus!
if you guys weren't aware, since you're fans of PP (pure ownage, not pure pown-age, cmon) dawei/dave had a side-show called Pro at cooking. look it up! on youtube.
as for pre-youtube era, as anyone who dealt in internet media could attest to, bandwidth and space costed an arm and a leg. my god. thank god those times are gone, and we can download faster than 30kbps I now have less time to do napkin math and figure out how much time it's going to take than the actual download itself. whereas before, holy smokes, I guarantee half the time the result was "fucking 6 hours? overnight?"

some words like "cool" live for 40+ years and change the entire english language. words like "swell" and "groovy" and "pown" die an ugly death.

Radical!
gag me with a spoon.
welp, i watched it. its ok.
many scenes were filmed at Net Effect on Isabella where i've hung out off and on for 12 years. i helped out dave a few times with last minute emergencies at Kinko's 10 years ago. out of piracy-guilt i donated $20 to ROFLMAOproductions through their Twitch paypal donation link. they probably get a bigger piece of that $20 that way.
i don't know if its worth $5 on Vimeo for your average person though. i recommend people wait for the removal of the pay wall and watch it at that point. you can always donate after watching.
