"A profoundly drunk North Korean man floated all the way to South Korea on a piece of wood this week—and he's been offered South Korean citizenship.
South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported that the man, who appears to be in his 20s, was found hiding in a house on the island of Ganghwa, an hour from Seoul, on Sunday.
Yonhap reports that when the man was taken into police custody, he was only wearing his underwear and appeared to be intoxicated. (I've got to say, I've never found myself repatriated after a night of drinking—this guy deserves a medal). "

This is unbelievably awesome. I wonder what he was thinking when he sobered up! One thing is for sure, this is one of the greatest things to happen while drunk.

He had the best hangover of his life knowing that he escaped North Korea.

Sometimes you get drunk and instead of doing something awful, you escape communism and get offered citizenship in another nation!

Try to escape with the most clever strategies you could ever think about : Get arrested and die Be drunk and think about nothing at all : escape north korea without knowing you did it

So does any North Korean who makes it over the border get to stay there?
If so, we (as in TL users) should start sneaking people across with scuba equipment.

Apparently South Korea does not force people to go back to North Korea, but they do allow the option for them to go back if they want to.

Fat chance they'd get a warm welcome after escaping if they decide to come back.
|
Once again another reason to add to why South Korea kicks ass.
That's one hell of a trip though lmao, hope that guy finds a better life in S.K if thats what he wants.
|
See,all good things come from drinking! But seriously tho, this guy will have one good story to tell his kids, kinda.
|
I would be soo interested in HOW he did that. Would be cool if he told the public ... well if he can remember what happened. A really lucky baller!

wow, he was offered citizenship? if I lived in North Korea, I'd be breaking out the booze and planks right now.

Most people throw up when they drink to much. This guy escaped from one of the worst shitholes on the planet, a feat even sober geniuses have had trouble with. I salute you, random drunk guy. I salute you.

Guys...this is really tragic news overall. Yes, this guy will get his freedom if he does choose to stay, but what about his family? I would be worried sick and scared if I was in his situation.

If North Korea figures out who he is and he has family...pretty sure they are screwed if he doesn't go back or something.

Yeah, i saw a documentary of North Korean workers in Russia, it was like a hostage situation, if they decided to run their family (back in Korea) would suffer the consequences.

Good for that guy. Is it common practice to run from north to south korea? I'd imagine if this happened a lot then north korea would talk about how they will blow south korea up so no.
|
There must be some really strong alcohol in DRPK to actually wake up and have escaped / immigrated to another country without knowing. For South Korea to offer him citizenship so freely sounds like bullcrap to me.
|
Now thats the new ideal for drunkeness. Getting out of a repressive country and being offered citizenship in another. Clearly drunkeness fights repressive regimes.

Its a shame his whole family will probably be sent to labor camps once the North Korean government figures out. That is one of the main reasons people don't at least attempt to escape, because if they succeed, their families will be punished.

Lolwut, alcohol sales in NK just went up by 100% :p Don't think they'll report it at all and if they did, the story would probably be that this man died ^^

In my mind he looks like Homer Simpson.

or maybe he's now depressed because his family is over there suffering and he is now in SK with no education and no job experience, how is he to survive without government assistance?

So was he a party official or a part of the military to have access to all that alcohol in North Korea? Or was he connected to some underground collaboration to secure alcohol?
And yeah ... fear the backlash >< Just take on the name Sung Park and go on >.>

Did they get a BAC? I just really want to know how drunk you have to be to become a citizen of another nation over the course of a few hours.
EDIT: I don't know if I'm completely ignorant or something, but is anyone else wondering how this man was able to acquire that much alcohol living in North Korea? I'd think that they were too poor to get that much, more or less use that much in one night (not knowing they'd be gone possibly forever next morning...).

Wonder what kind of things he'll be able to relate, and whether they'll affirm/deny a lot of the existing information we have on NK already. Good for him, even though it does seem kind of too good to be true.

I absolutely love reading interviews about North Korean reactions when exposed to the rest of the world. Not in some sort of sadistic way, but rather am always curious how aware they actually are of their conditions relative to the rest of the world. We hear that technology and communications from China continue to permeate into areas of North Korea, and I wonder how much of the population has true loyalty (which I suppose is still the vast majority) to North Korea and those who have to feign that they do.
I know my mother grew up in third world Taiwan, and despite Chiang Kai-Shek being absolutely awful to the native Taiwanese, was absolutely sobbing in tears when news that their leader passed away, as were all her friends. And the mass sobbing was completely legitimate - there wasn't even any media around. She was simply truly depressed for a matter of time.

They rank by far as the worse standard of living in the world by almost all metrics. They're generally considered to be living in the most oppressed society in the world. Of course, I live in the West, so I may have succumbed to this bias you speak of, but with pretty much all of America's negativity focused on the Middle East and NOT North Korea, that's a surprising comment to me that it would be the media distorting our views.

They do have the worst standard living or at least in the top 2. Previously before there was one who somehow escaped and retold his life experience of eating corn out of a cow's dung. Considered himself lucky that day. He was also baffled at how SK lived and wondered why people weren't..umm..."stressed" or more committed to helping NK.
NK is known to use families as a tool/hostages.

I doubt it, drinking is a longstanding past-time of both Koreas. If the people of the north were denied access to booze, they'd be MUCH more likely to revolt.

No no no Caphe is saying that the living standards in the Middle East is worse that NK, which I found to be shocking, unless by Middle East you're referring to the countries that are being flattened by the US and gang.
The man was bad, but here's the BBC on what he also did:
During Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year rule, Libya has made great strides socially and economically thanks to its vast oil income, but tribes and clans continue to be part of the demographic landscape.
Women in Libya are free to work and to dress as they like, subject to family constraints. Life expectancy is in the seventies. And per capita income - while not as high as could be expected given Libya's oil wealth and relatively small population of 6.5m - is estimated at $12,000 (£9,000), according to the World Bank.
Illiteracy has been almost wiped out, as has homelessness - a chronic problem in the pre-Gaddafi era, where corrugated iron shacks dotted many urban centres around the country. - Libya crisis: what role do tribal loyalties play? BBC Monitoring, 21st February, 2011
http://www.thisisafrica.me/city-life/detail/2802/How-bad-was-Gaddafi?
Countries like Saudi Arabia are really decent places to be in (veil aside), according to a woman from Anthony Bourdain (ok we don't know how for sure reliable she is). She said she feels safe being in the streets at 3am there, unlike when she was in the US.

First of all, many Red Army veterans were executed by the Stalinist regime. I bring this up to highlight the fact that the so-called communist dictators (and Kims are much closer to Stalin than to their Chinese counterparts) often don't act in a sane manner. If he got back to NK, he would most likely get executed.
Second of all, NK is way worse than Middle East. In Middle East people don't have to resolve to cannibalism due to famine. In NK this happens periodically.

You can make alcool yourself with almost anything. My grandfather (R.I.P) told me that when he was a prisonner of Nazis in the 40's he and his buddys used to produce vodka with potatoes and get drunk inside the camps !
If you has the technical knowledge and anything with sugar or starch, you can produce vodka, even in NK.

In all fairness, considering he managed to get drunk, he probably is probably from the military or upperclass.

For those who have trouble understanding how he got alcohol. It is very cheap to make, and most likely shipped from Russia, and therefore not very expensive even in NK.
That said, i have a friend to went down to NK, and they did indeed serve Alcohol so that person getting hold of alchohol doesnt seem unlikely.

Doubt the average North-Korean is going to turn potatoes into a luxury product. It's North Korea. Potato is probably a luxury product. Potatoes was just an exemple to show that you can make alcool with almost nothing.
You do realize that almost all vodka is made with potatoes, right? It's not the main ingredient in all of them but a portion of most commercial vodkas come from potatoes...

This is one of the greatest things I've ever heard, the guy's my new hero.

If so, we (as in TL users) should start sneaking people across with scuba equipment. Apparently South Korea does not force people to go back to North Korea, but they do allow the option for them to go back if they want to.
well going back to get killed isnt the best idea perhaps ^^ i think its like in germany, every guy came from DDR was instant citican and also got a little bit of start money ^^

Well, I bet if he stated "please return me to my country" that North Korea would be "proud" and publicize his return by welcoming him back for being loyal. Although I guess at the same time it would probably depend how much North Korea cared about what he was exposed to and if they "fear" he would talk about it to his peers.
I really hope there are updates on this story.

More like every guy in the DDR was considered a citizen of the BRD. The same kind of thinking lead to the BRD not having an embassy in the DDR (it was instead called "Ständige Vertretung"). You can't have an embassy in your own country.

They might aswell publicize that and then 2 months later put him in one of their camps.

If he doesn't have his own family and decides to stay in South Korea =winner If he has family or for whatever reason, he has to go back to North Korea =loser
His life would have been better without major incident like this if he has reason to go back to North. He might be regretting now, who knows? I would love to hear the follow-up though.

Obviously he is a spy sent by North Korea to infiltrate the South and learn their secrets.
