with the way the benchmarks are looking for 810s i think i'm going to skip this release season and opt for another phone when the 820s come out. quick charging 3.0 makes this pretty lucrative.. 35 minutes to 80% battery is pretty awesome

anybody has g4 can share the experience? im planning to buy one within the week (i doubt moto x style is gonna be sold in my country).

Mark your calendars Google have an even on Sept 29. New Chromecast, two new Nexus phones?
Google may launch the second-generation Chromecast later this month, offering improved hardware and new features. According to 9to5Google, the upcoming Chromecast may feature Wi-Fi ac connectivity, which will be an upgrade from the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n on offer with the first-gen model.
The media streamer will allegedly come with a "feeds" option through which you can select content or image feeds that will show up on the home screen. Also new is a Fast Play mode, which allows the Chromecast to establish a connection and play content from connected devices faster than before.

Quick question: how bad is the overheat issue with snapdragon 810? I just read some reviews of a number of phones with 810 (sony z3+, htc m9) and it seems the issue is pretty bad. Anyone using one of those phone can give an opinion, especially on the Z3+ pls? Thanks
|
I think the problems are big but i think the real problem is that it doesnt feel worth it, you might as well wait for the 820 or get a 805/808 phone which are still super powerful and plenty fast.
They do seem to have rectify some of its heating problems but at this point i feel its a little too late, the 820 phones are coming in Q1 and Q2 2016.
Theres an article about how Qualcomm fucked it up with the 810 in XDA

the 810 needs to be specifically designed around to alleviate the throttling/overheating issues. The 820 looks promising and I'm personally waiting for the next round of phones to come out before upgrading.
imo i think the best time to upgrade for android is around april or may of the year, it's the time when most smartphone vendors push out designs to match apple's advances in architecture

Thanks for the reply. I kind of wanting to wait longer for Nexus5X as well, but I have to make decision in 1-2 weeks max if I want to take advantage of telco plans renewal discount. The problem is that new phones will come here quite late, so some of the good options at the moment are current gen phones like Z3+ from Sony, HTC M9 or Samsung S6. The biggest problem with Samsung phones is that the "back" button is located on the right side of the home button, which is like #@&^#&@!
Any other good popular options? + Show Spoiler [reduced list from telco] + HTC M9, E9+ Sony M5, Z3+ LG G4 Beat Whole range of Samsung
I kind of filtered out what I dont like, but can't decide what to pick, especially since each has some negative points and majority of them feel quite big for me. I'm just a fun-sized human being, and my recently dead Galaxy Nexus feel big enough it barely fit my pants pocket T_T
edit: actually I don't even know if I want a flagship phone, since I dont do anything much. But given how hard it is to find non-popular phone + stupid price here + telco plan discount, high-end phone price seem to be reasonable enough

I'll list the flaws
M9 (bad camera, failing company) Sony M5 (I don't really know Sony, but I heard it comes pre-installed with a lot of crap, or custom apps) LG G4 (really behind updates, software not great) Galaxy S6 Edge (bad battery life, expensive)
I'd go for Moto X or OnePlus 2 right now. Moto X if you want NFC / Quick Charge, OPT if you want more premium exterior

S6 Edge+ is a decent choice, though probably is the most expensive phone available. The battery life is much better than the S6 Edge for me.
The back and recent apps buttons being the other way round is pretty easy to adjust to.

I'd go for Moto X or OnePlus 2 right now. Moto X if you want NFC / Quick Charge, OPT if you want more premium exterior I also want the new Moto, but the problem is I am limited to what is in that list. And so far I am put off by the overheating issue of Snapdragon810, because overheat is probably among the most detrimental issues to electronics hardware. So it's kind of down to Samsung vs iPhone6 (6S not available yet). I also went through the pros and cons of each that suit my personal uses + Show Spoiler [opinions] + Sony Z3+ (SGD520): (+) probably largest size that I can try to live with, good battery, close to stock android UI, among the cheaper (-) snapdragon810 Sony M5 (SGD270) (+) price (-) lesser battery than Z3+, MediaTek CPU??????, not many reviews yet :p HTC M9 (+) not sure (-) snapdragon810 HTC E9+ (+) not sure (-) may be too big LG G4 (+) (-) only leather version available, so it's a no Samsung S6 (SGD600-64GB) / S6 Edge (SGD680-32GB) /S6 Edge+ (SGD730-32GB) / Note 5 (SGD630-32GB) (+) strong spec, no major flaws in performance, look sleek (-) battery seem to suck hard, size may be too big, price is expensive, lagwiz still lag? iPhone6 (SGD670-64GB) (+) good performance (-) apple. I prefer Android
Overall I has never been a heavy phone user before. This may change if I have a better phone, who knows. Anyway I'm just looking for something not too big, for browsing web, some casual games, may be music, may be short video clips (not a fan of watching movie on phone). I don't use my phone for whole day like checking emails, making calls, sending msg all the time like a busy businessman, most of the time my phone will just sit there on the table so I am not sure how much battery do I need, although the more the merrier I guess.

The back and recent apps buttons being the other way round is pretty easy to adjust to. Edge+ may be too big for my jeans pocket though My dead galaxy nexus [135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9 mm (5.33 x 2.67 x 0.35 in)] barely fit in. Edge+ is about 2cm longer and 1cm wider. By the way, how useful do you find the edge screen? I am thinking about just S6 since it's cheaper. Idk really
And the back button on the right is just the matter of clashing of principle, back should be left whether you can get used to it or not XD
edit: Firebolt, how is your experience with Note? It seem like Note 5 is a better choice than Edge+ if I opt for phone that big. They seem to be similar in all aspect, except S-pen vs Edge display

I feel the Edge its pretty worthless as a concept, i just dont see a situation where the extra screen its worth the extra money. it has some cool stuff yes, but i would get a Note 5 anyday ofthe week (althou theres 0 chance for me getting a Samsung phone unless they drop lagwiz)
|
This winter i wanna give myself a new smartphone for christmas, also because my Galaxy S2 is almost 4 years old now and the battery and phone itself it starting to completely fuck up. The thing is i still don't completely know if i want the Edge or just standard S6, the xtra screenspace is like 100$ more expensive just that little xtra, and the Edge+ is too big for my pockets and expensive. I'm still not all settled about the Edge and standard, i want 64 gigs as well atleast since 32 doesn't cut it these days. Is the ekstra screen space worth it or should i just go with S6 64gig?

Yeah lagwiz and battery issue are big concerns, but Samsung/iPhone is pretty much the best options available in the situation, and since I don't like Apple/iOS, oh well. Anyway I tried the Edge+ at the store, the extra edge screen feels kinda useless or clunky. Idk, may be will need some time to get used to, but the S-pen on Note5 is more appealing

If thats the case i would go for the Note 5, S-pen its pretty great and it feels like its big for a decent reason.

The S6 and edge have the same screen size. In fact, due to the curved screen, the edge has a smaller footprint. Also if you wait 4 months from Christmas, the S7 will be out. My phone is starting to die right now as well and I'm contemplating buying a moto G as a temp phone until the SD 820 is out.

I miss my Moto G its amazing what a cheap phone can do when a company goes for pure android and optimization instead of "ooooh look at all these crap we will give you that you will never use"

The Edge screen to me is purely an aesthetic thing as I use pretty much none of the little added functionality that Samsung has added for it. It looks nice, and feels nice when you swipe in from them. Is it worth the extra cost when compared to the Note 5? Well, probably not. The choice between Note 5 and Edge would've been a lot harder for me but fortunately enough Samsung made that choice for me when they decided not to release the Note 5 in Europe.
Touchwiz isn't nearly as laggy as it used to be, and applying a stock material theme with a custom launcher makes it look pretty nice.

I don't use the S-pen at all, although that may have changed with the Note 5 had I got it, thanks to the new ability to write memos without unlocking the screen.

Thanks a lot Firebolt. I guess Note 5 it is, although it is a bit big (may be S6 fit better, but Note5 is only $20 more, and the battery is much bigger), but it seems to be the best among the limited options available
