I'm really worried, basically pinch to zoom and tap to zoom are supposedly patents being infringed...this is absolutely terrible.
There literally could be OTA updates that DOWNgrade the OS if Apple somehow manages to get that motion through. Ridiculous stuff, and it is my personal opinion that it's flagrantly terrible for competition. There's a multitude of possible endings, but we don't know what the damages are yet and it could get really ugly.
There will probably be a pile of appeals and counterappeals though lol.

I can't believe the patent infringement on a rectangular phone with rounded corners was deemed valid. Holy cow the US patent system is broken.
I want to live on another planet

EDIT: Basically, if you want an S3, you may want to go get one now before they're pulled from market.
The case has nothing to do with the S3 and the ITC are investigating whether to disallow bans based on patent infringement. Keep buying your S3s as normal.

Okay kids, vote who do you like Americas lovely #1 company or the evil South Koreans stealing our rectangles?
The interface design copyings obviously gone on to an extent but the prior art demonstrations looked incredibly convincing to me and should have had a lot more of those patents scrubbed if the law functioned as its supposed to. The 3G counter claim was an obvious one that was somehow got thrown out which is really strange. Terrifying if patent law is now a poplarity contest. Anyone know if the appeals will be jury based too?

Anyone know if the appeals will be jury based too? Not sure, but Apple was awarded $1.05 billion and Samsung was awarded no damages in their countersuit. I'm not that knowledgeable in the legal and/or patent system so I'm just following the goings-on the best I can. Apple hasn't taken everything home but it's a pretty big day for them.
Also is it okay for discussion to go on here? I'm not sure whether this is worthy of another thread or a bump to an existing one, but this doesn't have all that much to do with the S3.
EDIT: This sums it up quite nicely. Ouch. Hilariously enough though, the iPhone in the picture is third generation, not iPhone 4 -_- labeled wrong. But yeah. :|

Hopefully they won't ban Samsung phones in the US, I'm waiting to spend big on the Note 2.

I agree with a lot of the infringements but a lot should never been allowed to be patented in the first place. Phone shape was infringed? The US patent system is a mess.

So this might be a tad off topic, but whatever happened to the guy who always posted about Samsung products :p
Seems like this thread should've been made by him

Patent trial by jury, that, after hearing evidence for 16 months decides a 700 question questionnaire in 2 days? Ya, this is going to the appeals court pretty fast.
I never really understood why patent trials arent decided by panels of professors of technology or something like that.

affinity_12 got his ass banned for essentially borderline-advertising. I always thought there was a possibility that he was just that big of a samsung fanboy though.
The problem here is that apple and anti-apple (or android) fanboys tend to reduce each others' arguments down to a rather silly straw man; that or they make increasingly ridiculous accusations until nobody is happy (or right).
I honestly don't think that Apple will be able to force Android to downgrade and literally take away features, however. If that somehow does happen, Google better step up to the plate and start throwing some of its weight around. If such a thing were to happen, I really think the public would begin to question Apple as a company. As it is now, they're doing their best to make money as a company, and that means pursuing patent infringements against competitors who are catching up and surpassing them in multiple areas.
+ Show Spoiler +Also, relevant picture from the verge forums: ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/iHHK5.jpg) made by a guy named anthony wartinger apparently

The menus are so smooth and you won't see any lag when changing home screens. The Internet browsing smooth is excellent.
I highly recommend the SGS3 even if you have a 2011 smartphone.
User was banned for this post. LOL WHAT He was banned for liking a phone? Better not voice my opinion on TL (''O_O)
He seemed like he knew what he was talking about too... and he just shared his personal experience with it.

They did, and lost.

It'll probably wind up in front of the supreme court and that will be final decision (probably not in Apples favor if rest of world cases are believed)

Wait, didn't Apple lose their case about the desktop design vs. Microsoft way back in the day?
I feel like the jury ruled in Apple's favor purely because it was US vs. Korea, whereas Apple v Microsoft was intra-US.
I think its a terrible (biased) decision and opens up a huge can of worms about the "feel" of something being patented/ copyrighted. A lot of clothing, films, cars, etc. tend to follow general fashion trends but I don't see people suing each other for those.
I own an iPhone 4 and its nice, I guess though it's caused me more trouble than its worth. I would have gotten a HTC of some sort if my dad hadn't persuaded me otherwise.

That only kind of worked with Samsung's Galaxy Tab devices, which basically looked like a Samsung iPad together with the thin dock connector. I believe the dock connector is even the same, just the pins are wired differently. You're not going to get Apple suing the Nexus 7 to death because they're not remotely alike in terms of hardware and aesthetics. Just like how Sony probably isn't going to get sued over hardware design because Sony is pretty good at designing distinct rectangles.
I'm not surprised Apple is so aggressive and that Apple won. You have to be blind to not see how similar the early Galaxy devices were to the early iPhones, especially in UI design. Obviously the jury didn't have trouble seeing the overall similarity.
Fender and Gibson had quite a hard time during the early 70s and 80s with German and Japanese manufacturers copying their design and selling it for cheaper. For people who couldn't afford, say, a Gibson, you could go and buy a German or Japanese guitar that looked exactly the same and look cool in the process. It probably sounded a little bit worse but that doesn't matter because its still a very playable guitar.
I believe Fender took so long to sue companies over the now ubiquitous Stratocaster design (a very attractive and ergonomic design...you could say that its an obvious design) that it was basically thrown out of court because it became so ubiquitous. So its not unsurprising that Apple is suing quickly and early.

I do know of this and universal search is comparatively minor compared to pinch/tap-to-zoom because it completely removes a fundamental smartphone feature. The universal search removal is already pretty infuriating, but I've never used it and I think some of the stuff Apple is going after now will really go public if nearing success. Of course that remains to be seen.
Also yeah, the article states that Apple was unsuccessful with regard to the tablets.
