Um. I just wanted to respond to this.
By the modern definition of such, Democrats and Republicans of the time of the civil war. Also, Lincoln was a Whig.
Lincoln was not a Whig. But to follow SayGen's trainwreck of thought that Lincoln's Republican party is the Republican party of today is equally ridiculous.
You can thank Lincoln and LBJ for the radical polarization of the two parties that has dropped social liberty squarely on the Democratic party.
and yet, Mitt Romney has done more to advance woman advancement in society than his liberal competetor Obama? Why is this? Perhaps it is cause your wrong, but that's just a guess.
And what exactly did Mitt do to advance women's equality? This?
“I said: ‘Well, gosh, can’t we find some women that are also qualified? And so we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet. I went to a number of women’s groups and said, ‘Can you help us find folks?’ And they brought us whole binders full of women.”
Because, according to the women's advocacy group that approached him to give him those resumes says that anecdote is false.
In 2002, a women’s advocacy group known as the Massachusetts Women’s Political Caucus asked Bay State gubernatorial candidates to sign a pledge saying they would “make best efforts” to ensure that the number of women appointed to high-level positions would more fairly represent the proportion of women in the population. Romney and his Democratic opponent both signed that commitment, says Liz Levine, who was chair of the group during that time.
(Levine supports President Obama in the 2012 election, according to the Post’s Plum Line blog. )
Romney’s anecdote seems to refer to his coordination with the women’s caucus and a binder that the group assembled for his administration. The binder contained “hundreds” of resumes, Levine said.
The women’s group released a statement Wednesday confirming that it reached out to Romney first, rather than the other way around. The Romney campaign has not disputed that account, but instead issued a news release with comments from former lieutenant governor Kerry Healey, who served as a liaison between the Romney administration and the women’s group.
Unless, of course, there's some other monumental women's rights thing he's accomplished. Maybe like giving women the opportunity to dispute unequal payment rights when they discover such an inequality?

No I said it was a typo- go back and reread before posting that libel. I am highly upset about Obamacare. It's anti American to be taxed on the condition of breathing. Never ever ever done before in American history, truly it can now be said that there are 2 inevitable things in life- death and taxes
It's kind of sad hat people will put ideology before the basic advancement of civilization. Obamacare is pathetic compared to truly nationalized systems like the ones seen in basically every single developed country besides our own, but at least it's a step forward.
There are a lot of valid arguments in favor of socialized health care. Saying "everyone else is doing it" is not one of them. Nor is simply calling it "the basic advancement of civilization."
Offering free/affordable healthcare to every citizen of your country is advancing civilization. I don't know what to say to you if you can't understand this. As to the point that "everyone else is doing it", that's just a strawman; the point is that numerous other countries are doing it, and not only is it affordable, but the quality of healthcare in these countries is better.
It's not "free" though.
It seems like that term gets thrown around way too much.
Liberal dogma. As long as they don't see the expense people are dumb enough to beleive it's free.
The reason people are in favour of free healthcare is not because they think it is free.

Women already have equal pay laws to protect them btw. They aren't flawless (what laws are?) but they work very well. Regardless MA has stricter laws on equal pay so I'm not sure what your expectation is for what new legislation you would have liked passed.

Yeah... this is turning into a Romney style semantics argument. Democrats want single payer healthcare because we see other countries with cheaper systems and better outcomes using it. The only people who are ideologically compelled by the "free" element are those who have been condemned to die if they get/are sick in the current system. Granted this is a huge number of people so I can understand how it would be misinterpreted as the party line.

Actually there is a large number of people who see it as "free". They think the government is just giving them it, they don't realize the government borrows from China and taxes the people to create the funds for it.
The truth is that we're still paying for it, just in a different way. Yet people think it's free.

I dislike Obamacare for other reasons, but I cannot stand people who put ideology above reality.
Food for thought: even Switzerland have a public healthcare system. IIRC they had heavy debates and a close vote, but years later, nobody would want to go back to the old days.
Even the country that inspired the Founding Fathers and continue to be referred to in every gun control debate can recognize that healthcare is better handled by the government.
The individual mandate is NOT universal health care. Drives me nuts when people even compare the two. In Switzerland, you don't have a fine imposed on you simply by virtue of existing, the universal health care is paid for on taxes of activity or ownership, and taxation should only be imposed for activity or ownership. Obamacare forces a tax on everyone with absolutely no criteria.
That's why I've said Obamacare isn't all that great. In the end it serves to make those insurance companies richer.
This thing about tax is just purely semantics. I really can't understand people that are up in arms about a technical detail, you're getting taxed at the end of the day anyway.
