Hey guys! We'll be closing this thread shortly, but we will make an American politics megathread where we can continue the discussions in here.

The new thread can be found here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=383301

As an outside observer, this strikes me as a strange point to claim. Obama has a reasonably good claim to economic performance, having taken over at a time when the American economy was in a horrifying tailspin and presided over a gradual improvement. He's also gone a long way towards concluding the problem of being mired in multiple wars and terrorist hunts. Presumably those are some results he can point to when campaigning starts in earnest.

Not to mention the fact that the GOP is continually introducing Bills that suggest repealing equal pay for women, putting more restrictions on the availability of abortion and the restriction of contraception coverage on insurance. If it was a distraction strategy, the GOP could theoretically simply win the election by not introducing widely unpopular, moralistic, anti-feminist policies.

So if Obama's only strategy is to suggest he's not aligned with a bat-shit insane political party that shits all over 90% of the population then I think he's on a winning strategy.
Well, the tomato's an anomaly. So successful with the ketchup and the sauce, but you can't find a good one.

I'm leaning Romney but it all depends on who he picks as his VP candidate. If he picks someone like Santorum then I will probably vote for Obama, but if it's someone reasonable I will vote for Romney. I don't like the direction Obama has taken this country.

Obama, if you weren't up against crazy opposition against McCain, you are now

Good luck, I will pray and hope for the democrats keeping the main power in the US.
Many republicans are such warmongers (McCain and Bush are, to me atleast) it's really sad that there wont be a reasonable alternative to Obama (atleast in this Dane's head), not because Obama has done it horrible necessarily, just because alternatives are allways

Obama is just business as usual for TPTB, but he would still be better for the US than Romney just based on, like, women and minority rights. (not much though)

I don't like Romney, no offense, but he looks weak and likely to be manipulated by corporate/money dudes. Vote for Obama, he is a peace guy. Atleast he won't do anything stupid to the world.

There are more people running for president than just the Republicans and Democrats. If people were more intelligent and open-minded and realized this maybe things would change. I didn't answer the poll because the options were too limited and thus the poll is essentially a sham. I'll vote for who I believe the best candidate is, just like I did last time. And I'll tell you this, I didn't vote for Obama or McCain last time.

D: I would say he is anything but peaceful. Yes he pulled out of Iraq, but he increased funding to Afghanistan, more troops, and more drones.

Oh yeah, we also have the sanctions against Iran which not only harms the Iranian people, but also Greece and Sri Lanka.

And do not get me started with Israel...

Unfortunately, since Obama is Democratic and so right winged (neo-con) on the issue of foreign policy there isn't a single Republican (re: alternative) that is willing to take a non-interventionist stance on foreign policy. In fact, most of them openly tout their support of what would be more damaging wars.

Edit: Now that I think about it, the most important election in this cycle will probably be for the House of Representatives. At least with a majority in both Houses Obama won't be able to compromise endlessly with the Republicans.

Seriously, any1 thinks Romney has a chance? Obama may have screwed up bigtime with his 1st election's followers ( less war, pushing towards marijuana legalization, guantana, etc ) but Romney is a big big ahole. Gotta admit I wanted Ron Paul for president, and if that was not possible, I would've rooted for Rick Santorum just because he is extra crazy and would've been fun to see him "run" stuff.

This is like...Vote a seemingly very smart man with no backbone, or vote for flipflopper who would basically be the same kind of corporate puppet.

By the way guys, I hope you know that Obama just signed that executive order which makes peaceful protest illegal, if done near a place "protected" by the secret service -- basically if you have money and don't want people to make a fuss over your screwups you are secure. This seems more and more obvious that we live in a world of thugs and gangsters, them being the CEO's and so and so... Not all of them, but most of them because most of them have been caught in the dream.

If every1 here roots for Obama/Romney and think he or he will make a change, I'm rather sad for you...Isn't it kind of obvious that this game of president is really a hoax ? I mean, even in a perfect world where greed is not a factor, a man leading 300 million is still crazy...Things have been getting worse and worse ( from the pov of the state ), we obviously need to seriously revise our institutions.

Third parties aren't viable. There is a reason systems like ours tend towards two parties, each being large coalitions; it is the rational human response to the system. Your ideal candidate likely won't win, so you along with other people whose candidates will not win compromise together to avoid an extremely distasteful candidate being elected.

Best you could hope for, say, if you voted for the Green Party, is to siphon votes from Obama. If you got a chunk of the vote, like 1-5%, you'd bring a lot of dialogue to the debate, but it'd die as soon as it ended with Romney winning.

It's funny that this is still the case despite Obama not being quite the same level of 'hero' everyone expected him to be. A few years ago it was all hype and awesomeness and Obama was going to cure all the worlds ills. While its not turned out like that, the alternative of Romney is... well it's just not nice to think about.
Bleh.
