Hey guys! We'll be closing this thread shortly, but we will make an American politics megathread where we can continue the discussions in here.

Social conservatives are actually big donors for being charitable. I once worked at a homeless shelter that was funded by a local church. Not even the government would help those people, but the social conservatives were willing to fund a shelter to help people out. Local church members took turns volunteering by bringing food and cooking it for the guests, coming in to keep them company, and assisting with various rather thankless tasks (doing their laundry, etc.).

Say what you want about social conservatives in politics, but they do some things very right.

Way to reinforce his point.

He called conservatives the "least well intentioned" and "ruthless" party. I never once saw someone I'd peg as a Democrat walk through the doors of that shelter to help out a homeless person. They talk a big game, but social conservatives are the ones who actually step up and deliver.

You had a point before your edit.

Now you're back again to supporting what he said. He didnt say that Christians weren't charitable, but rather they associate themselves with the party who wants to be the least charitable.

That's just not true. The USA has a very robust private charity sector that is extremely efficient. The only thing lacking is more funding. A Government charity system not only lacks the capabilities of these private charities, it also duplicates a lot of what is already provided. However, the Government can't just give money to the private charities since many of them are affiliated with churches.

The idea that America complements our charities rather than duplicate them with inefficient government bureaucracies is the stance of Republicans.

Republicans actually support charity far more than Democrats. Democrats just want to tax rich people more so they can just throw money at a problem that cannot be solved with only money. Republicans want people to give excess income to private charities in their own communities; they just lack the authority to enforce it.

As a Republican, I've always thought that 1/3 of your income taxes should be required to be given to a 501(c)(3) of your choice. Doesn't matter what it is. Up to you. If you see homelessness as a problem, you can give to a shelter. If you see animal abuse as a problem, you can give it to an animal shelter, etc. It would be more effective than a government agency if the people in the community donated money to the cause THEY felt needed to be addressed.

Your claim republicans support charity more than democrats, well that's something you just made up or imagined.

Notice to all Democrats: Please wear your political affiliation on your sleeve when performing acts of charity. Otherwise, it doesn't count.

Btw to those who follow Fox and other right wing media: Is there still talk about Benghazi? If not then I think it's time to conclude that there wasn't much of anything to begin with and it was only pushed for the election...

It's really upsetting to see how people sell themselves short, I was really hoping America would start climbing back on the educational ladder to success. Now I fear only our private schools will offer any shelter.
Under Obama Americans have scored lower than any time since Bush Senior. Our high schools are nothing but daycares, too many 'graduate' without having the basic skills of reading and writing. If you want to make something of yourself you are all but forced into college- which costs thousands of dollars. Less money in our classrooms are spent on learning instead we will just hire more unqualified teachers who can't even obtain a 4 year degree.

American truly is under decline.

Average homeowner makes more than ~2000$ less under an Obama Admin and soon that 2000 is going to be ~2200 soon as Obamacare takes effect.

I won't go as far as saying Obama is ruining our country, we were already headed down before he took office--but Obama sure does like speeding the process us.

In a world where knowledge is power, America is fucked.

Shame Ron Paul didn't win.

Eh, quick google searching does show that Republicans tend to be more charitably giving, but a ton of that is to churches and religious organizations. Don't get me wrong, churches do a lot of charity, but that's where the money goes. Democrats tend to donate to secular charities and arts organizations.

America has a robust "giving culture" in general. It seems to be particularly good for arts organizations (I haven't looked into the situation for charity). When there's a lot of state giving to the arts (like a few European countries) rich people aren't nearly as generous. They're like "why should I give you money if you get money from the state?" In America, we have jackshit giving to the arts, and private donors are very generous.

Every single one was cited in the presidential debates and confirmed after the debate by fact checkers.

This is ridiculous. I'm sure the guy who made that was masturbating himself thinking of how good he was showing how stupid obama supporters were.
The truth is that he is talking to specific people, asking them specific questions in a specific context that none of those people are accustomed with so yeah they seems dumb, because they want to act right in front of the journalist and most of them will never think that the guy in question is mocking them so they don't even think about questionning the validity of the question they are asked to respond to.

protestant/calvinist ethos of work (and the damnation of those who do not, even though it may not be their fault) is pretty big in american history. this guy weber wrote a big book about it. some others too.

from the cbs romney shellshocked article:
As a result, they believed the public/media polls were skewed - they thought those polls oversampled Democrats and didn't reflect Republican enthusiasm. They based their own internal polls on turnout levels more favorable to Romney. That was a grave miscalculation, as they would see on election night.

exactly. their internal polls are not magically well sampled either.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize after he was elected in 2008 (which was, somewhat odd, but not out of the question)

Im glad he won, a lot better than having Mitt Romney in office. I would rather not have rich people given more tax cuts.

I do blame him, and yet Obama did nothing to correct no child left behind. He had 4 years to do something about it and nothing got done. Also according to his website he has no plans for it in the future.

quiet those are dangerous books

about this charitable giving

I don't believe in it

It's not about people giving money to make themselves feel good and pay off their karma debt for spending the rest of the day participating in the system which causes these problems in the first place

Charity is just bandages

We need to solve problems that create need for charity. We need solutions that last, not solutions that just last until it's time to elect the next flavor of populist who will give it all to you again (republicans are populists too, don't even try...)
