This is my first new topic, hopefully it won't go the way of all the other threads with lulzsec in the title...

The world's most notorious computer hacker [Hector Xavier Monsegur, AKA Sabu] has been working as an informer for the FBI for at least the last six months, it emerged on Tuesday, providing information that has helped contribute to the charging of five others, including two Britons, for computer hacking offences.

Full article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/mar/06/lulzsec-sabu-working-for-us-fbi

So, what are TL's collective thoughts on this? Opinion on lulzsec and other hacking groups is polarised – does this undermine the ‘movement’?

As far as I’ve read, Sabu himself has always warned against hackers revealing too much about themselves to their peers for fear of being shopped out (in fact I recall him say this in his reddit AMA – was this 6 months ago?).

I think it would be difficult for the authorities to describe this as anything short of a major victory – especially as Sabu is a major figure at least in the more public forums.

The article also mentions that there may be a spate of hacks taking retribution for this.

I know very little about the underground hacking community so would appreciate TL’s collective wisdom. I do sympathise with extracting information from private companies and governments to the benefit of the people through illegal means, but I am smart enough to know that a rose tinted view of the rebel hacker sticking it to the corporate ‘man’ is beyond naïve – as indeed evidenced by this news.

EDIT: thansk for links :-

Amusing and informative links from sulliwan:

Sabu's Reddit AMA (think it's safe to assume that his remark 'Stick to yourselves. If you are in a crew - keep your opsec up 24/7. Friends will try to take you down if they have to' is more of a veiled warning to his friends than complete hypocracy - but that's me giving him the benefit of the doubt:

Damn that's pretty big news.
Makes you wonder how much Mole's the FBI actually has if they can even get someone 'inside' in the hacker world.

When I saw this yesterday the first thing I wondered about was the stolen FBI conference call stuff as that always seemed quite impressive to me at least, but I don't know if he was involved in acquiring it.

Actually The A-Team who released alot of info about the Group, said that they think Kayla is Mi5,as we see that comes out to be false.

Anyways you cant be invincible even on internet,at the end of the day VPN's and Proxy's sell their logs or can be forced to provide them to the Police.

From the chat log (It's long)

Virus: I'm absolutely positive, you already got raided, and are setting
your friends up and when they're done draining you for information and
arrests they'll sentence you and it'll make nose

Sooooo right.
Hey! How you doin'?

Followed by...:

Sabu: if you knew me at all
Sabu: you'd know that if I were raided
Sabu: I'd take myself down if anything
Sabu: I'm the martyr type
Sabu: I grew up in the streets

Total bullshit.

Thanks for the info everyone.

LulzSec was hardly the cornerstone of Anonymous. They still have Anti-Sec and all that which don't rely on LulzSec at all, so the 'organisation' doesn't really suffer from it. Just another snitch trying to get less jail time really, kind of like an Omerta-less Mafia, it won't work.

As real as this is, this sounds like some kind of movie. The hacker world seems so cool to me ^^ even though i have no idea what they are doing. would love to be an insider though.
