This is my first new topic, hopefully it won't go the way of all the other threads with lulzsec in the title...
The world's most notorious computer hacker [Hector Xavier Monsegur, AKA Sabu] has been working as an informer for the FBI for at least the last six months, it emerged on Tuesday, providing information that has helped contribute to the charging of five others, including two Britons, for computer hacking offences.
Full article: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/mar/06/lulzsec-sabu-working-for-us-fbi
So, what are TL's collective thoughts on this? Opinion on lulzsec and other hacking groups is polarised – does this undermine the ‘movement’?
As far as I’ve read, Sabu himself has always warned against hackers revealing too much about themselves to their peers for fear of being shopped out (in fact I recall him say this in his reddit AMA – was this 6 months ago?).
I think it would be difficult for the authorities to describe this as anything short of a major victory – especially as Sabu is a major figure at least in the more public forums.
The article also mentions that there may be a spate of hacks taking retribution for this.
I know very little about the underground hacking community so would appreciate TL’s collective wisdom. I do sympathise with extracting information from private companies and governments to the benefit of the people through illegal means, but I am smart enough to know that a rose tinted view of the rebel hacker sticking it to the corporate ‘man’ is beyond naïve – as indeed evidenced by this news.
EDIT: thansk for links :-
Amusing and informative links from sulliwan:
And from Liquid'Drone:
Sabu's Reddit AMA (think it's safe to assume that his remark 'Stick to yourselves. If you are in a crew - keep your opsec up 24/7. Friends will try to take you down if they have to' is more of a veiled warning to his friends than complete hypocracy - but that's me giving him the benefit of the doubt:

That Anonymous fellow is a troublemaker.
|
Damn that's pretty big news. Makes you wonder how much Mole's the FBI actually has if they can even get someone 'inside' in the hacker world.
|
What they don't know is that the Anon mole is actually a double agent!! Mind blown.
|
My opinion?
All those people in those groups are idiots for possibly ruining their future for shit and giggles.

When I saw this yesterday the first thing I wondered about was the stolen FBI conference call stuff as that always seemed quite impressive to me at least, but I don't know if he was involved in acquiring it.

This is so deep I'm lost :D

Thanks, will add to the OP.
and you Liquid'Drone - cheers

Actually The A-Team who released alot of info about the Group, said that they think Kayla is Mi5,as we see that comes out to be false.
Anyways you cant be invincible even on internet,at the end of the day VPN's and Proxy's sell their logs or can be forced to provide them to the Police.

From the chat log (It's long)
Virus: I'm absolutely positive, you already got raided, and are setting your friends up and when they're done draining you for information and arrests they'll sentence you and it'll make nose
Sooooo right.

Followed by...:
Sabu: if you knew me at all Sabu: you'd know that if I were raided Sabu: I'd take myself down if anything Sabu: I'm the martyr type Sabu: I grew up in the streets
Total bullshit.
Thanks for the info everyone.

LulzSec was hardly the cornerstone of Anonymous. They still have Anti-Sec and all that which don't rely on LulzSec at all, so the 'organisation' doesn't really suffer from it. Just another snitch trying to get less jail time really, kind of like an Omerta-less Mafia, it won't work.

since when does lulsec have a leader?

|
As real as this is, this sounds like some kind of movie. The hacker world seems so cool to me ^^ even though i have no idea what they are doing. would love to be an insider though.

Good stuff, thanks for this!
After reading that chatlog, you can definitely tell that Sabu was fishing for information, Virus was smart enough not to take the bait though. LOLZZ didn't know that Sabu guy was a "script kiddie" just like a lot of the trolls going around these days.
Man, how I fucking hate rats...

I always find it both amusing and irritating to read the New York Times talk about a DDoS attack that takes down a website for a day as if it were the work of some mysterious group of elite hackers.

Most important parts of the logs imo
Virus: but, I knew LulzSec is a sinking ship and I have a son to worry about
Virus: Anonymous is nothing but a bunch of fat, pimply basement dwelling losers who masturbate 3+ times a day
Virus: I'm not a kid -- I'm an adult Virus: and I'm experienced
Virus: I pretty much got what I had to say off my chest, I'm done being your friend, you're way too shady and I'm too old for this childish crap. when I "hack" I have a cause It's easy and perhaps fun when you're a kid, but one day you have to become a grownup and playing around in that shit isn't worth it anymore. The whole scene is rife with egomania.

On March 08 2012 00:42 NotSorry wrote: Hopefully this doesn't deter other hackers from standing up to the government
Anyone who knows anything about actual hacking already accepts anonymous/lulsec/whatever retarded name they give themselves as a bunch of idiotic script kiddies who know absolutely nothing about computers. I think there was actually some kind of swedish group while ago who broke into a government website and basically called anonymous a bunch of retarded children. This doesn't actually change a single thing because noone gives a fuck about them haha. The only reason they get so much attention is because the media portrays them as some kind of insanely skilled group of hackers everytime they manage to push a button and ddos a famous website/government website. It's pathetic, it's childish, and it gets pretty funny when you actually look at it for what it really is. The media hypes them, and because the general public doesn't know much about hacking, everyone shits there pants.
That chat log was hilarious by the way thanks for the awesome read.

The world's most notorious computer hacker [Hector Xavier Monsegur, AKA Sabu Nobody outside of LulzSec had any idea who Sabu was. He can't really be called notorious.
Anyway, LulzSec hasn't existed since last year. Everything that has gone on since then has been other groups. It won't make a difference.

I know that this is not likely to draw a lot of responses but I'm currently working on my PhD, which will be - generally speaking - about Anonymous: its origin, aims and how it actually changed over time. I'm most interested in it's internal structure. However, since Anonymous ain't a closed, centralized group or organization, I trying to look at it from a different way.
Therefore, I would love someone who is or has been working on or is/was affiliated with any kind of operation in the name of Anonymous. No email/ID has to be provided and even the slightest bit of information would be of good use. I'm not only asking this on the TL forum, but if you feel spoken to, contact me.

I'm not implying anything about wether Sabu is not intelligent or not, I'm merely agreeing with your point that Virus did indeed seem to be smarter...

But I thought that would be common practice in most nations...

lulsec, grr... they can mop themselfs up so not to sad =) Anonymous as a social phenonomen will evolve as time goes, netivism(???) hopefully here to stay, it raises some awarness for topics netizens find important, a banner to rally under; quite often when it involves trying to push things that are for nation state concepts onto the internet, quite frankly NS stuff has nothing to do on the internet if it is to evolve into a the utmost tool to bring us all togheter as one singing kumba ya and shining the torch of transparency where the world of old would rather not =)

I hate how many times he said he "grew up on the streets". Mixed feelings about LulzSec going down. I have been a .....um...... I have followed there exploits closely for a long time. I don't agree with some of what they do, like releasing the names, addresses and all personal info of police, but they were shutting down child porn rings, finding information on them and sending it to the feds, basically doing what the feds wish they could do.

The FBI openly said that the only reason he cooperated is because he didn't want to leave his son without a father while he is in prison.

lol. in 99.9% of cases it is a concurrent sentence which means time served is equal to the length of the longest term. 124 years would be the sentence if it were consecutive which it WILL NOT be. This is something that also exists in the German legal system.

I wouldn't bundle all Europeans into the same group. Sure every country has a strong sense of nationalism amongst it's people, but Germans have the old WW2 axe to grind and despite knowing little about the US justice system he decides to take the 124 years as a standard sentence for computer crimes. I knowing nothing about the German justice system wouldn't even make a statement like his, but rather ask questions rather than take 124 years as fact when anyone with common sense knows that nobody actually goes to jail for that long for computer crimes alone except perhaps in some perverse situations where that time might be needed.

He faces a maximum sentence of 124 years and six months in prison."
Damn, 124 years... Of course he would rat everyone out that he knew... I hope that 124 is typing error, otherwise, my respect for the U.S has gone down below zero. No error, but really, let's break it down. Basically 12 counts in total to = 124 years maximum. That's 124 / 12 = 10 years in prison a term FOR HACKING. that's ridiculous still.
It's the lack of an upper limit when stacking counts that appears unusual to us. Can only speak for Sweden, where counts that may lead to jail time will also be stacked, but with a maximum limit of 18 years in prison.
Though there exists a life sentence for certain exceptional crimes. It's very sparingly used, with only ~160 serving for life right now. Were some complaints the last couple of years that too many were beginning to be sentenced to life in prison. In the 90s the number of people serving life was only in the double digits. The sentencing rates for life in prison dropped again after that. Even then, average time served for those sentenced to life is expected to be around 18-25 years right now.

If anyone is interested in reading the Anonymous responses to the situation they are here: http://twitter.com/#!/YourAnonNews scroll down to March 6th and 7th. FBI is blowing this way out of proportion.. not that Anonymous tends to be any better about their victories. The people that were arrested were part of a group that stopped operating officially last summer (I believe?), and a lot of Anonymous members suspected him before this occured. So it doesn't have much of an effect on the group currently other than making them worried and pissed. The question is whether Sabu can give the FBI anyone else, and whether Anonymous will manage anything particularly drastic in response. Next few weeks should be interesting...

Wow i kind of wish i had read this before, obviously now i know sabu is a snitch. But it would of been interesting with out the obvious bias.

I read the link...and my mind is blown. I never knew "hackers" could completely speak a whole different language with each other..

Sorry, but i just have to react to this, because it is basically pure nonsense. "Germans have the old WW2 axe to grind"? I can assure you that most Germans today are pretty happy that the Nazis lost the war. Also, from what i know, Germans tend to be less nationalistic then most other people, exactly because of that history. For example, flags, which are commonly used in other countries tend to be very rare here.
Anyways, the american justice system has a pretty bad reputation abroad. I don't know if that is really justified, it might be just a result of only hearing the ridiculous things like people suing about bullshit and getting millions of dollars. Add to that the tendency to mention ridiculous maximum sentences whenever a crime is discussed, no matter what the crime is or whether those sentences are even near what will be the actual result of a trial, and lots and lots of american-made TV shows where the main plot is lawyers and/or policeman fighting with some strange parts of the law which no non-american understands to get the obviously right result, reports of situations where big companies sue smaller competitors just to drive them out of business with legal costs, and you will understand why that system has a bad reputation in other countries. Again, much of that might be just that stuff that works is not interesting enough to be reported in media abroad, so you only get the negative side of things.
Not that it really any of our business, either, but apparently a lot of people feel better when they can look down on something else. I don't have to deal with it, so i don't really care.

"Virus: now with that being said and done, I'm going to go ahead and save this conversation to my hdd and terminate this IM. you have a great time sucking convict dick in prison when you're done sucking off your handler. faggot."
