Id like to direct people to this http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/index.cfm

Great for news on the most recent findings/missions/projects related to astronomy.

Wow that 2nd vid is so awesome,i keep looking at it.
Completely agree, space is the most awesome thing on earth and been a hobby for me for a long time

http://powersof10.com/film

This is another nice classic vid showing how big the universe is.
Not sure how to implement it on the site here so hope just giving the link is ok.

I love reading about space. It always blows my mind trying to imagine how huge some space objects are and how far away.

Btw, can't believe you put Star Lancer in the list of space games, but forgot the best PC game ever: FreeSpace 2 (well, maybe second-best )

I couldn't find this site in the OP so I shall post it here. Just leaves me speechless.

http://media.skysurvey.org/interactive360/index.html

If you press the "I" button for info, it'll show you all the constellations and info about the stars and nebulae.

Oh man this is sick. I just took a class in astronomy last semester and it was the most interesting I have ever had. We pretty much covered everything that the op has posted. It is some pretty interesting stuff.

I like the concept that the further you look in space the further back in time you see. For example, the vision of the andromeda galaxy we can see with our naked eye is what it looked like 1 million years ago, because it takes 1 million years for the light to come to us.

I suppose cosmology is a part of astronomy, at least on some level. Pretty interesting stuff explained really well by one of the most brilliant minds of our time. There are other space/astronomy/cosmology/physics -related lectures by him as well on Youtube. Definitely worth checking out, if you're even tiniest bit into these things.

I hereby stamp this thread with my seal of approval. Amateur astronomy is my passion, I do it as often as I can (which isn't as often as I'd like since I live in SoCal ). Last summer I went to Utah for the amateur astronomy festival, the sights of the universe were breathtaking. My love for the universe started when I was 3 years old, one of my first memories was of a warm summer night in the Polish countryside in 1997, the year of the comet Hale-Bopp. My young mind couldn't wrap around the concept of the vastness of the universe and the awesome sight of the comet and so my imagination filled in all the gaps for me. Since that day I've always wanted to do something space-related. I would have loved to major in astronomy but when I thought about it, the job market simply wasn't there, who's need to hire astronomers? So instead I went for astronautical engineering, so that I could also integrate my creativity into my work. Plus what's cooler than directly working with the fucking probes that go into space? Nothing, save for being an astronaut. In any case, great job with this thread, it's really well structured, and I look forward to posting in here in the future!

Also I should add that the biggest factor in me picking up Starcraft to begin with was the name.

Whilst the idea of this thread is great, and the structure as well, i don't really approve of the "slang" you use and the hyperactive way of bringing it, this is serious bizznizz!!

Was this the image that was like 200MB? I sure as hell remember that image...my goodness it's amazing

looks like my weekend is going to be dedicated to checking out all this stuff. Maybe I'll squeeze so much in that I'll remember it.

I understand Retro it's just...it's just so unbelievably phenomenal that I just can't express it without going a bit crazy. I mean it's so easy to just not look, wonder or even observe the cosmos that when you actually just stop and see something like a mad image or documentary, I'm just like holy fuck dude...

I heard we just recently had a really weird sunspot cycle, and maybe something weird is going to happen? I know that's really vague, but that's just the extent of an unreliable source I heard from, but can anyone confirm if there are things going on with the sun right now that are out of the ordinary?.

It's really nothing out of the ordinary, it's just the Sun is currently going into it's maximum in it's solar cycle. Our Sun works in cycles, there are low and high activity phases that increase the amount and size of the solar winds. But the whole "something weird is going to happen" -thing is mostly because of the 2012 Apocalypse Mayan calendar -mumbojumbo.

Here's an article by Nasa about the solar weather, some predictions and forecasts.

I really think that space is fascinating and I love learning about it and looking at it, was seriously considering majoring in cosmology or astro-physics. The images and technology that we have out there for observing space is just incredible, great photos. I think that having a telescope would be really cool, I just don't have spare cash lying around to get a decent one.

I'm curious to see where this thread is going to, hope that it doesn't turn into a dumb religion bashing thread... >.>

It was already in the OP, but well now it's at least said out loud properly. Truly an amazing game, just really really time-taking!

You should check out Universe Sandbox, where you can simulate the universe!
