Yea very cool thread i was just looking at the picture, will for sure go back to read more on this. I loved the picture of the planets scaled to compare their size.

Fuck yeah dude!!! I'll be tuning into this all the time. I got to know are there any other astrophysics majors on TL. If any one wants some technical details I can post my lecture notes form class. Let me know.

This thread doesn't seem complete without a link to the Symphony of sciences music remix "A glorious Dawn", featuring Carl Sagan the man himself!

I took a great astrophysics class in high school (taught by a Duke professor, so it wasn't a joke! ) I particularly liked some topics in cosmology, like galaxy formation and the zero curvature of the universe (i'm not sure that actually fits in cosmology, hmm)

I'm thinking about taking more astrophysics in college, but after two B's in quantum idk if I can handle physics anymore lolololol

Nothing about Cosmology?

I am slightly disappointed.

I agree with this! Though when I used to try stargazing from home, equally as irritating was the... tree pollution blocking my view

You're totaly right. Cosomlogy deals with the large scale structures of the universe which would include galaxies and the shape of the universe.

Stick with it dude. How are you going to quit after taking quantum, unless you are still in highschool. If thats the case then you should be just fine in college. I'm majoring in astrophysics and I'm a highschool drop out . Learning physics can be kind of demeaning. Its common for me to feel like a total noob who doesn't know shit, but that of course is not the case. The problem is the mathmatical abstractions that come along with describing reality and understanding that is hard for everyone. In the end you just have to do what you enjoy. I think about switching majors about every other week, but I know that in the end I would regret ever doing such a thing. GL HF!!!

Space is scary.

So much things which one cant really fathom, i actually think its pretty fearsome. Not, that mankind shouldnt try to explore it as fast and complete as possible, but theres some pretty nasty stuff out there. Radiation-cannons (Gamma ray bursts) which could kill everything on earth, black holes, super novae, .. But its pretty damn interesting, the science behind that i mean.

Time delation, multiversum, all kinds of stuff which i actually cant really grasp fully, but just are, .. Well, fascinating.

But then again, its nasty there.

edit: and of course green men! (and yep, i believe that we're not alone in space).

Man this is so awesome, check dis out!

Voyager Mission Status Report (FYI: Voyager 1 has been travelling through space for 34 years!!!! Launched in 1977)
This to me is amazing, its been in sub zero temperatures for over 30 years, and electronics are still working, and its still relaying information. Radio signals traveling at the speed of light between Voyager 1 and Earth take 16.12 hours to cross the distance, Voyager 1 is about 17,963,843,000 KM from earth. The article below talks about how they needed to shut off the onboard heaters in order to save on energy, since they want Voyager 1 to keep working till 2025!!!! Since 2005, it has been operating at minus 56 degrees Celsius

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.cfm?release=2012-017

And you can keep track of where Voyager 1 and 2 are from here
