The majority of people went "this system is bollocks, lets make up one that makes sense." It's not exactly a debate. It's more like the first post making some ignorant remarks and the rest of the thread going "HERPA DERPA what is this i dont even". Metric is just better. It was designed to be better for both everyday and scientific use and the succeded. The only reason someone would think "Standard"" (imperial) is easier to work with under any circumstance is because of habit.

The worst imperial can offer is when measuring heights of people. Another of my pet peeves is retarded date formats like mm-dd-yyyy or dd-mm-yyyy. Apart from being an ISO standard, the only reasonable date format is yyyy-mm-dd.

In England (Much like the USA), Imperial was the norm, but we changed to metric. I grew up learning Imperial and kind of switched to Metric in my childhood. I know most Metric measurements but as i said, i still use Imperial for some things, and i find myself freely changing whether i use Imperial or Metric depending on who im talking to. Like my dad i would give the measurement in inchs, but my sister i would give it in centimetres.

But besides, I use metric, because I learned it that way and everyting in society here is handled that way (as far as I know, there might be exceptions). And unlike someone mentioned in this thread, I DO get a 400 ml drink. I think there is nothing wrong with either of them. I'm convinced in daily life both of them are used because of habit, not because one is better, or more logical. I agree the metrical system is easier for scientific purposes, but in daily life, it doesn't make any difference

I think the point being made was simply that imperial units lend themselves to everyday use better, at least in practical usage. Metric is a lot more logical but it's not scaled as well to the amounts/distances we normally measure. It doesn't really matter either way since metric is the standard unit for anything scientific or international in the same way English is the universal language. When it really matters people use metric.

I think because we read right-to-left, so we start at the largest and go to the smallest to pinpoint the date logically? I'd prefer day first since I'd usually already know the year and month offhand though.

When it really matters people use metric. At least in Sweden metric works very well for practical usage and lends itself much better for everyday use than the imperial would. I often buy 1 liter of milk, 1 or 1/2 kg potatoes or 1 meter planks. Depending on what system the country uses I guess things gets scaled to fit the system better. Its easier to market 1 liter milk than 0.789 liters of milk, therefore people sell 1 liter of milk. If I would use imperial in Sweden I would have to buy 1.76 pt of milk (if the milk stays the same volume)

You can just sort by date created (or modified) and name them normally... It has the same effect but doesn't look as silly.

I agree with this. Also, as a person above said, HERPA DERPA what is this i don't even ![]() But yeah, here in Bulgaria everyone uses metric and I don't understand why people would think "standard" is more convenient.

No company in the US wants to be the first to switch to a new measurement since they would inevitably lose money. Any change in what you sell leads to changes in purchasing. This is why packaging and design change so rarely. On December 11 2011 05:51 SF-Fork wrote: How is F more accurate than C for cooking? I mean, in C you use 0 for freezing ater and 100 for boiling, while in F you use 32 and 212. I would say a 0-100 system is easier to measure than 32-212... EDIT: according to wiki the F scale is official only in the US, Cayman Islands and Belize. Now that's stuborness. It's more accurate because there are more units. Going from 32 - 212 has a lot more steps than 0 - 100 so unless you want to use decimals, F allows you to be more accurate. Of course C is a lot more logical, but that doesn't really apply to the accuracy.

That is what I used to do, but sometimes I would open an old file, see a mistake and fix it, and this would screw up the chronological order using the sort by date method.
