Its not as big of a deal as people are making it out to be. Last beating I had was 14. My younger sister was 16 because she did something really stupid. All in all instilled discipline/made me learn. Have nothing against my parents for beating me. 99% of the beatings I got I KNEW I did something wrong.
I'd say 75% of my CLOSE family members cousins/uncles/aunts are heavy into drugs or in prison doing LONG sentences. Varying from drug trafficking to killing of their wife. Grew up in a bad part of town. I remember hearing jokes when I was younger from family about me being beat with the belt by my dad and how they were going to send their kids to live with us so they would learn to behave. I actually thank my parents for beating me looking back at things and comparing myself to the people I grew up with that were never touched.
<3 Rearing the Asian stories btw. No offense my friend, but I don't think you ever got beat like that and then had your dad leave and then come back again because "he didn't get his real licks in." The guy is fucked up, period. He's also a "judge." Someone who attests to being of good moral character, sound mind, and clear judgement. You think that's what he was exercising in this situation? I don't think so. My friend if you must ask and even if you didn't ask - I'll tell you because I love this subject. My mother would beat me then my father would usually follow up because my mother didn't really have a good enough swing to really make me learn. And I wasn't beaten by just a belt. There were a variety of house hold items that were used. The thing that made you REALLY cry (not like in the video towards the end) was the vacuum cleaner power cord. You would hear it whistle through the air as it was coming down to meet your legs/ass cheek. It was a good idea to start crying as loud so you would get some mercy on the following 2 whippings. In my parents defense I only got beat with power cord 3-4 times in my pre-teenage/teenage years and it was only 3 strikes each time. I'm actually laughing right now - remembering how my mom would tell me: move your hand, move your hand or its going to be FOUR whippings instead of THREE. And I would actually move my hand an just take it. My parents knew how to discipline me in terms of "physical punishment" thats why I'm not against it. Parents would always give me warnings. As her dad probably gave her when he said in the video, "I told you before [...]" or something along those lines. The most creative way I heard was from a female friend and her mom. She would never hit her right away she would always tell her she would get a beating later on the day. Sometimes she would wait for her to shower and go in to beat her when she was in the middle of the shower. She told me the story laughing so I'm sure she's not emotionally scared. She told me she was maybe 9 or 10 at the time. My parents got beat 10x worse than whatever they did to me. They've told me and my grandparents have told me what they did to them. It's what you take from the beatings. I really don't see anything wrong in the video. What he said he said to add emphasis. What effect would this have if you said: I do this because I love you directly afterwards? Maybe the following day would of been nice, but now I'm running on a tangent. So... yeah. :p That's not funny, that's fucked up. Getting beaten by your parents is comparable to getting religion stuffed down your throat as a child, it's not fucking acceptable because you don't have a choice. If you think beating someone is a good method of teaching something you're seriously stupid.
You have a choice to listen and not get beat. What people are failing to understand is it wasn't without reason.

What reason is there for a teenage girl to get repeatedely hit like this by her dad? If she did a serious crime, he should have followed the law and taken her to jail. If she just broke a rule, then wtf. You ground her or something, maybe some spankings or whatever, not this. And the reason, at this point, is pirating videos. Maybe it's a bit more severe, who knows. What I do know, if would have to be WAY MORE SEVERE for this to be even remotely justifiable.

There's been plenty of people in this thread who were not against corporal punishment. The overall thread is not really about that.
The bottom line is do you think that his man gave his daughter a reasonable punishment? Do you think at the time he was thinking rationally and just wanted his daughter to be obedient? You even said it yourself that your parents never hit you more than 3-4 times at once.

Yes, the reason is that they're mentally deficient and can't process things beyond "me angry, me hit!". There is no "good" reason to hit a child. It stems from ignorance and/or laziness.
The argument is often "Well that's how things were when they were children." So what? People were stupid back then, lots of things were screwed up years ago. Just because some people refuse to graduate to a higher level of thinking doesn't make it acceptable behavior. "It happened to them!" They still have the choice not to do it.

What people who defend the father in this video are failing to understand is that there is no reason to beat your own child under any circimstances. A child who is beaten learns nothing from their mistakes, they only learn that they do not want to be beaten and they will do anything (including harming themselves or others) to make sure that they won't be hit.

What you are failing to realize is that perhaps the primary ultimatum is flawed and unjustified to begin with. There is a very distinct difference of being disciplined in a justified way and a parent hitting a child to express not a teaching but anger and punishing a child through fear and not instilling a real reason to not commit a wrong again.
I'm sorry, but a parent instilling a fear of a beating into a child then hitting them randomly when it is unexpected is just downright disgusting. If a punishment isn't given in an up-front manner with a justified and dignified mutual understanding, then it is pointless. It is abusive and backhanded. I am not entirely against corporeal punishment as I have had my experiences both with my parents and with my teachers in school in Korea. All these instances were all carried out with a sense of dignity in all parties. But if you can't differentiate this with the kind of bullshit that is shown in the particular video this thread revolves around and with the bullshit that your friend's mother pulled off on her, then I can't really say anything other than that you have internalized your punishment not as a true mutual understanding of what is right and wrong but as a pure power structure where a beating is justified if the abuser has given prior warning, regardless of whether it is justified and carried out with dignity.

God I miss it when TL had people's ages in their profile. Never start an e-argument right before bed time.

Dignity is a subjective to culture. In the instances that I have talked to with friends - I like this topic a lot btw - they/we all know that something wrong was done in our part. The girl knew she was going to get a beaten later on because she did something wrong earlier on the day. I would never say a "normal/sane" person would never beat their child. I would say however that a "normal/sane" person would never beat their child solely for the sake of beating them. I.e. they had a bad day they take it out on their kids. Although I don't plan to beat my kids for my own reasons. I don't disagree with those that choose to do so if its done correctly. I've seen the video twice and I don't see anything wrong with it.

The quintessential internet cop-out.
1. Ad hominem. 2. State that circumstances make it difficult/tiresome to continue. 3. State that it is a waste of time to continue (despite beginning it). 4. I am right/you are wrong/agree to disagree. 5. Cop out.
6. Rinse and repeat.

Lotta people telling others how to raise their kids in this thread. I really hate to break it to a lot of you, but this isn't anywhere near as bad a punishment as millions of kids have received before. Kids who then grew up to be perfectly normal adults with no emotional scarring or whatever victim-identifying term you'd like to use. I know, hurr durr, still doesnt make it right. I'd just like to ask everyone throwing out so much judgement to put themselves in the shoes of these parents and ask yourselves if it's really so inconceivable to be pushed to this level by a disobedient teenage son or daughter.
Also wanted to restate that this guy is a judge and probably is acutely aware of the astronomical fines that can be imposed for movie piracy. You think your kid taking your lexus for a joyride and crashing it is expensive? It would be chump change compared to what these parents would be held responsible for if this girl had caused a successful lawsuit to be brought against the father.
Last thing I want to say is watch the end of the video. The girl is absolutely fine. She even has the presence of mind to worry about waking up on time for school the next day.

Reading this thread makes me want to hurl just fyi.
People we have the year 2011 now not 1800... It has been proven by studies and research that beating children teaches them exactly nothing, except that violence is sometimes right.
Is that the message you want to send to your children? A fine for movie piracy? Are you kidding me? Child abuse (and yes that video IS child abuse in any western country except apparently some parts of the USA judging from this thread) carries a jail sentence.
If you are not a distributor of pirated goods the fines are in the region of 100$ to 10000$.
Obviously it isn't as bad as some other children have suffered since she survived at least, but frankly it's bad enough that it happens, for people to get on their high horse and say shit like: "she broke the rules so she deserved it" shows perfectly that SOME people in this thread have no clue whatsoever what a modern state and social code is supposed to be (i'll give you a hint, check how long ago corporal punishment was used in the judicary system, whippings floggings etc. and how long they have been abolished in any sensible law code)

How is this even still on YouTube? I'm surprised they haven't removed it.

This thread is dumb.
The video is disturbing and pretty obviously an example of improper discipline. Don't personally see why it matters if the dude is some country judge. Imo the language from the father is far more objectionable then the actual "beating" which isn't that bad. Girl is being retarded.
The thing that gets me in this thread is the fact that it is 99% morons who just wholesale bash on corporal punishment. In my experience virtually all people who are fundamentally opposed to corporal punishment are spoiled prick single children who weren't punished when they were kids and would be better people if they had.
I got spanked pretty rarely, my brother much more often. I will definitely spank my children.
Like anything, there is a right way and a wrong way to discipline your child.
This video isn't even criminal behaviour. Its stupid, but its just the dad being a loudmouth redneck dumbass, and the girl being a crybaby dramaqueen.
Edit: Really if the girl had just bent over with her hands on the bed taken 5 or so smacks on the butt, cried a little, talked with the dad, then hugged this obviously wouldn't be on youtube. And anyone who grew up with corporal punishment from reasonable parents thats pretty much how it goes. (And it IS more effective than removal of internet privileges or w/e since lets face it. Any 16 year old can just turn the router back on or whatever when parents aren't at home/use cell phone or something.
I mean, if my parents had told me. Do not pirate music/movies, and I got caught multiple times at it. I would have gotten spanked during a certain age period of my life.
Finally, put the computer in the family room or something similar. Kids don't need and shouldn't have computer in their room if you actually care what they do on it.

They have videos of people dying on youtube. This wouldn't even get close to crossing that line where they would question whether to remove it or not.

Haha, some of the reasoning in this thread. "oh she got up for school the next day, see she's fine". Yeah, that somehow makes the fact that a parent beating their daughter just for being on the computer is somehow okay. There are a million other things he could have done to punish her for breaking a house rule.
If you automatically default to beating your child due to something like this, you're a shitty parent and most likely have mental (and anger) issues. No ifs/ands/buts about it.
In my experience virtually all people who are fundamentally opposed to corporal punishment are spoiled prick single children who weren't punished when they were kids and would be better people if they had.
And in my experience all people who are for corporal punishment are lazy parents who have no idea how to discipline their child beyond "if you do that, i'll spank you!". See how it works?
A child needs to understand that they shouldn't do something because what they're doing is wrong, not because their parent will hit them afterwards. It teaches them nothing.

I give up. Were just going around in circles. I guess to each their own. :p

There really cannot be said to be a East Asian or North American culture where beating a child who is in the midst of taking a shower can be said to be dignified.
How the fuck could some instillation of fear be a justified punishment for anything? I dunno about you, but if you don't find anything wrong with the video then I seriously have to question the way you were beat and the way you have accepted the rationale for beatings at large.
