Today since we had some downtime while upgrading our servers, I asked him if he had heard about NoSQL databases. Mind you this guy is 45-50 year old developer, so he only knows SQL and standard relational-database structures, so it wasn't a surprise that he had never heard of NoSQL.
Since we are going to start working on a big-data application soon, I told him we should consider using NoSQL since it deals and engages with large sets of data a lot more efficiently than normal SQL back-ends. He didn't even bother reading or looking into it, he simply responded right off the bat "Nope I don't believe it, I don't believe NoSQL is more efficient". And that was the end of the conversation. I didn't want to push the subject since this is my 2nd week working here, but goddamn why are some people like this? At the very least he can read about it and THEN make an educated decision. + Show Spoiler +Some punk kid telling me what to do? He's obviously wrong as I am much older than him!
I've been there before, you can either prove it to him somehow or get an older person to talk about it. Some people are stubborn like that

+ Show Spoiler +As a middle class guy from a social democratic country, I think it's amazing how well the american elites have managed to demonize socialism to the point where people systematically vote against their interests because they've been scarred by the cold war era and its anti-communist propaganda, and this transcends generations. I guess you can't fault the republicans for fear mongering, it works.
Bernie, if you don't win, maybe you'll have been right in that maybe it's too late.

+ Show Spoiler +Literally what? Let me get this straight: you arrogantly told a senior developer he should consider using a technology he has never used before in his life, instead of one he's likely been using for many years. You then think HE is unreasonable, for not wanting to learn an entirely new technology, because you think it will be better? And all of this after only being there for two weeks?
How the fuck can you be so conceited?

+ Show Spoiler +I was teaching AP Statistics today to my high school class, and we were talking about the placebo effect and how many fake drugs (homeopathy, alternative medicines, other scams, etc.) are examples of these and that some celebrities like Dr. Oz sell or advocate these products on their shows, even though it's misleading and inappropriate.
Suddenly, one of my students looks really uncomfortable, and she says, "Mr. Mango, I'm not sure if I agree with what you're saying." So I asked her which part she disagreed with, so we could discuss it further.
"My father is a doctor and years ago he worked with Dr. Oz... He's a family friend."
EDIT: I guess this is just more of a FML/ Embarrassing/ Are you kidding me/ Venting moment, but this was the closest thread I could think of to post it in.

+ Show Spoiler +I will gladly go back to sharing a room after this lease is up. At least then I wasn't constantly stressed out about money. I'm basically paying double the rent I was at my old place. Either that or I need to find something for 400 + utilities max. At this point, I'll take the fucking closet under the stairs. I like having my own space, obviously, but watching money slowly bleed out of my bank account is not fun and is really fucking with me. I think things will stabilize once school is paid off, but still, I'm almost below a grand in my savings account for the first time in two years, back when I was homeless and literally had 100 dollars to my name.
Ugggggggghhhhh
Edit: On top of that, the girl I thought was going to be my girlfriend ended up going back home to have surgery and isn't coming back till spring, so all this personal space is a complete waste.

+ Show Spoiler + Also not a rant, but I have this slight moral dilemma any time I hear that a friend uses homeopathic medicine. On the one hand, I want to educate them, but on the other hand, the placebo effect is a real thing. If I only halfway convince them, such that their belief in it is weakened but not enough to stop, I'm reducing the effectiveness of their medicine. It's frustrating.

+ Show Spoiler +Good lord, one of my younger sisters is so infuriating... seriously, you just can't have a proper discussion with her about stuff that affects her or addresses her behaviour. She will scream at you for no reason, just walk away while throwing a tantrum or even start to cry because everyone is just picking on her yadayadayada... For crying out loud women, you are 18! Start to act at least a bit like it, show some respect and proper behaviour as well as some self-awareness. She is like that to pretty much everyone who is close family and while on vacation it even took our grandfather less then 3 days to call her a brawly hag. Almost every goddamn time I visit, I either witness or receive one of her "moments" and feel thankful for having moved out so long ago... I have no idea how her boyfriend could stand her for almost a year and I feel pity for the poor soul that ends up being her husband if she doesn't change.

+ Show Spoiler +I ask girl out, girl says no, says we can be friends, I say we can't be friends, girl keeps asking to be my friend, finally we become friends, I become emotional stop-gap for girl for every single one of her fucking problems, she's physical with some people, I ask her to cuddle, she says no, I say we can't be friends anymore.
I fucking hate this shit. I hate caring about someone who doesn't really give a shit and keeps me at arm's length while expecting me to sacrifice sleep and emotional energy to listen to and comfort her every time something comes up.
And even now that I've broken it off, I feel sick to my stomach. I knew this was going to happen, I fucking knew it, and I couldn't just keep telling her no, we're never going to be friends. Instead, I allow this shit to happen, and I'm the only one who's really hurt.
Fucking fuck fuck shit this is the shit that makes me want to take a baseball bat to a garbage can at 1 AM.

+ Show Spoiler +So I've been hunting for a new car for a few months because my poor beloved Jetta is about to bite the bullet (the last owner treated it like crap and I was lucky to get 3 years out of it after actually taking care of it. The last owner never changed the transmission fluid ever and never got a recall for the transmission control system done so the transmission is now slipping a lot and grinding when I start the car. My mechanic told me I have basically a month left before it stops working altogether and to replace the transmission is more money than the car is worth). My dad works at a car dealership so I've been watching their used lot a fair amount, but also have had the used car manager keeping an eye out for a VW Golf for me (I loved my VW, and definitely wanted another). A few weeks back he said that an older couple was probably going to trade in their 2011 Golf on a new car so if I wanted it, I had first dibs if they went through with the trade. The car is really low mileage (under 50K Kms. Well below market average), and the manager says it is in perfect condition and has a full maintenance history included. So naturally, I was ecstatic because this was exactly what I was looking for.
Here's the issue. He forgot to mention to me that it's a diesel (yes, THAT diesel engine. The one in the news right now). A few days ago the couple accepted and swap out the car tomorrow for their new car. I was given a price for it if I still wanted it (I get it at cost plus tax, so basically what he gave the couple for it. Well below the price of a typical used VW TDI used to be/still is as of right now), and the price is very, very good, but I'm left with this weird dilemma. Two weeks ago, had this been for sale, I would have bought it without blinking. I've wanted a newer Golf for years, not to mention a fully loaded TDI would have been a dream for me. Now with this potential massive recall, and TDI prices potentially in flux, I have no idea what to do. Part of me still really wants to get the car (my intent is to buy it and keep it for many years so resale value isn't that big of a deal. I drove my Jetta into the ground, I intend to do that with my next car too), and just get whatever fix they do to repair the emissions on it when that happens (which won't be for probably a year or so), but partly I'm worried I'm going to be left with a car that is basically damaged goods and will be a massive headache if the fix for the emissions thing is bad (my dad being my dad said to just skip the recall if it ruins the performance of the car but I'm not a fan of being a big polluter, though given I get about 12-14l/100kms in my VR6 Jetta, and thus burn through a lot of gas, going to a car that has more than double the fuel efficiency probably will even that out somewhat, not to mention the same tests that showed the NOx levels were out of whack also showed they were well under regulation on most other kinds of emission, much lower than my VR6 would output.).

+ Show Spoiler +Looks like "atheist and anti-radical-feminist" Jaclyn Glenn from youtube got caugh plagiarizing again literally having taken Scott "Theoretical Bullshit" Clifton's video on Kim Davis and having said exactly what he said with the same kind of mannerisms, except without his talent.
I never liked her because her videos were always very elementary and childish but you'd think a "famous" youtuber would know better than to outright plagiarize the content of a lesser yet still popular youtuber. Someone literally made a kind of "side by side" video and it's clear that she follows the exact same logical footsteps and she uses the same examples and the same words he does. What the fuck.
Also I would urge everyone not to take fucking photos of the lunar eclipse with their shit cameras

+ Show Spoiler +The obsessive wanking over Method acting in acting advice (which these so-called experts can't even agree upon in terms of a systematized discipline) is driving me nuts, especially when said sources credit what I consider cheesy/overwrought performances. I definitely feel for Tom Hardy on this issue. :/

+ Show Spoiler +"We don't need feminism in the US because women in the Mideast and Africa have it so much worse!" Oh, fuck off.
And these people are the same ones spouting about how even if women have a lot of problems, men have some too so we need to get just as much attention. Damn hypocrites.
Or this special kind of stupid: Guy says that his wife never feels threatened when he doesn't feel threatened, and if she's scared then it's something that also scares him, ergo no other women ever have any reason to feel afraid.
