I had a really bad panic attack on saturday that resulted in autobiographical amnesia and a feeling of distance from myself. I feel like I'm more or less back in my own skin now, but I've never experienced anything like that before. Took today off work because I honestly just need to chill the fuck out.

also this entire week can go fuck itself in the ass, theres literally one thing that actually made me happy in terms of esports results and events, and thats petraeus

I just gotta type this out-- not angry, but completely in shock.

A guy I knew from high school died. He was two years younger than me, and it came out of nowhere. He was an absolutely brilliant kid- valedictorian, Presidential scholar etc. Beyond those tangible labels of accomplishment, he had all the intangibles: smart, humble, dedicated and wise-- incredible generosity of spirit. He was at his sophomore year at Harvard and on the track to do great things. I think he was one of the few people I knew who truly had the potential to change the world.

I've lost a lot of people, but this one hit me hard.

It might sound a little ridiculous or cliche, but we are all worse off without him. Yes, even you random people on a gaming forum.

Anchorwoman on radio asks a Canadian diplomat "do you need to know a lot about politics in order to be a diplomat?"

I wish... but she gives the news on Canadian politics all the time... makes me wonder how much of it she even understands. (I'm lying, I actually know that she's a dumbfuck, but most people don't because she's PRETTY COOL BRO).

I'm tired of young naive libertarians, bordering on anarchists though they don't realize it, mobilizing the old argument "if you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, but if you teach a man to fish...". The argument itself is good, but the way it's brought up often shows a naivety and a misunderstanding of the world that so many teenage americans seem to pull off.

If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day. I agree.
If you teach a man to fish, he'll be able to feed himself. Except in reality, you refuse to teach a man to fish. He should teach himself, or pay a person who'll teach him to fish, otherwise he's lazy. If he can't afford it right now, he's also lazy. There is no way out.

And so this guy is there, he presumably wants to know how to fish, he wants to be able to sustain himself, but he doesn't have the tools to do it. So hypothetically you might chip in and teach him to fish, for free. This doesn't help the 5 million others who don't know how to fish, but you've helped one guy and you feel you've done your part. You refuse to pay an extra dollar in taxes that'd allow a national program that'd teach 5 million people to fish though, because that's a handout.

So you've got this one guy who has learned to fish, now he's still hungry as hell and he doesn't own a fishing rod. I mean, let's be honest, knowing how to fish is not ALL you need to fish.

It seems to me like the argument is good, but if anything, it does a damn fine job, if you build upon it, to show how poverty is not being solve with handouts but with giving the man the tools to build something for himself. The disproportionate hatred for welfare is absurd because you actually need to feed the man until he can work his way up to learning how to fish, and to acquire a fishing rod, etc.

None of this is instantaneous. How can those people be so profoundly ideological while not taking a second to understand the nature of systemic problems like unemployment, mental illnesses that go untreated because no one wants to pay for the loons and yet they all get mad when they see them roaming the streets. We live in a schizophrenic society that leaves people with issues without support and then we blame them when they don't perform economically to our liking.

At the end of the day we're shooting ourselves in the foot. It's fucking stupid.

I wish republican candidates weren't all morons in their social and environmental stances. I think they might have some merit if they stopped trying to change laws to suit their religions, but whenever I see republicans debate and bring up the bible like it should be part of the law, it makes me think that these people are crazy fanatics who don't understand why you shouldn't tailor the law to your beliefs. Why should I trust them to manage the economy either if they can't understand that? If they at least had different views on topics like abortion, gay rights, climate change, drug laws, health care etc, I'd consider that their views on the economy might be relevant. But they all like to rely on the bible or other influences (I have no idea why they think climate change is a myth tho) to discredit more liberal views on these topics. I just feel like they're holding back our country.

Fuck these fucking boxing fights with multiple opponents! Seriously!!!! I just raged so hard that I ripped the power plug out of my Xone because of these fuckers. Tiny space, no room to dodge, hitboxes from hell, crappy camera and whenever I block one attack or throw a punch the other guy bashes my skull in from behind or the side. Who the fuck thought of this stupid crap?! Three hits and I'm dead... Fuck.

So I am working as an application developer alongside a senior developer who has been working here for 3 years. Today since we had some downtime while upgrading our servers, I asked him if he had heard about NoSQL databases. Mind you this guy is 45-50 year old developer, so he only knows SQL and standard relational-database structures, so it wasn't a surprise that he had never heard of NoSQL.

Since we are going to start working on a big-data application soon, I told him we should consider using NoSQL since it deals and engages with large sets of data a lot more efficiently than normal SQL back-ends. He didn't even bother reading or looking into it, he simply responded right off the bat "Nope I don't believe it, I don't believe NoSQL is more efficient".
And that was the end of the conversation. I didn't want to push the subject since this is my 2nd week working here, but goddamn why are some people like this? At the very least he can read about it and THEN make an educated decision.
