So what if everyone likes dubstep now? All the sudden, the drops are bad and the jokes pertaining to it suck, just because it's mainstream? That's absolutely ridiculous, and is just as bad as liking something because everyone else likes it, you just like something because everyone doesn't and you are probably 100 times more annoying about it ("hey, have you heard of this new band? Oh wait, you haven't because you aren't indie hipster like me"). Don't give me this "it changed after it got mainstream." As if just being "mainstream" means it automatically changes for the worst.
I agree with what you're saying in general, that you shouldn't change what you like just because a lot of other people too. And before you accuse me of it, I'm not a dubstep hipster, but:
Things do change when they become 'mainstream', music especially. If you listen to older dubstep tracks, the original underground ones from London clubs. The music is completely different, and yes music develops, but a lot of the older music is slower and more mellow, and with the new crowd, a lot of the music seems to be based on a big build up and then a mind blowing drop.
My point?
Things do change, and maybe this is enough to make you stop liking it, it doesn't make you stupid, it's your opinion.

Day[9]
His commentary with Nony on Bisu versus Savior got me interested in professional starcraft, and I loved his podcast!

I joined TL before SC2 (BW forever!) I was wearing converse and vans before they exploded into the mainstream again. I liked Muse before twilight. I started using Firefox before most people knew it existed.
All I can think of right now. The converse thing really bothers me sometimes; I'll throw on an old pair I have and go to class where literally 3/4 of my classmates are wearing them. I love my old shoes but I hate wearing them cause I feel like a tool.

- Starcraft:BW eSports, followed it before it became popular on youtube - Borat, was a massive fan of the Ali-G show before anyone knew who Borat was.

I said your mom before anyone.

Anytime I hear someone say that Starcraft was their first RTS, I go man... I played Herzog Zwei, I played RTS before it was called RTS!

Agreed, when certain styles of music get popular, it starts to degrade. Chiptunes are something I have followed for a while. I have heard popular artists mix in chiptunes into their music. It sounds BAD because they are doing it wrong.
There's Hip Hop and "radio" "hip hop" (and r&b).
There's modern soft jazz (smooth listening radio channels) for people that know nothing about jazz, and there's REAL JAZZ which is hard to find on any radio station.

I liked Rainbow Brite before it was cool... Wait what?
But seriously, I guess Ben Bailey, I saw him one time pre- Cash Cab. Usually I let other people do the hard work then pick from their hard work.

I was a hipster before it was cool.

Mechanical Keyboards. Been a cherry user for fucking ages

I liked Runescape before it was cool. But the entire thing of enjoying something before it was big has no appeal to me. The idea of other people enjoying an activity you enjoy diminishing your own enjoyment of it is one of the most vain concepts I can imagine.

You liked X before it was cool. So what?

Firefox Chrome RuneScape Brood War Macs (When I was young and stupid, but I still liked them before the recent boom. It counts.)

I was a Hydra fanboy before it was cool. I remember him kicking Fantasy's ass in the playoffs last year, either on Judgment Day or Grand Line (some desert tile map).

Sex. I liked sex before it was cool.
All the rest of you are posers. Since sex went mainstream and changed, it's no good.
Y'all can have it, I don't even want it anymore.

(In seriousness, I can't claim to have liked anything before it was cool. I'm a highly unoriginal person in general. And I FUCKING LOVE dubstep. You hate me, OP. On the other hand, my ex got in on the ground floor with this band that's starting to gain mainstream momentum. That's p cool for her. Maybe.)
How many hipsters does it take to screw in a lightbulb? It's a really obscure number, you probably haven't heard of it.
|
No. Liking things before they are cool is a classic symptom of hipsterism. I would recommend you get it checked out before you buy a bicycle and start liking bands that no one has ever heard of before.

YES I was into The Knife before my mates, had to show them the music. Now they're huge!
I was also into djent before most people that I know. I actively search for new music when I'm bored

you know, the older i get the less i care about this. i'm glad people are appreciating the bands i liked, good for them. now if (big if rofl) starcraft gets popular one day i'm gonna gloat about that all day, for all the kids around the world that got called nerds because of a hobby.

I did for the death note manga. Read it from like chapter 3. It actually made me hate the manga after it became ridiculously popular, as shameful as it is to say it.
But then I read the rest (I stopped after the first half) and realized I was somewhat justified in having stopped. The second half was not as good as the first.

TL (sort of) Flip flops TI-89 (had this shit in like 7th grade to do pre-algebra for me lol) Xanga Youtube (back when yousendit/rapidshare where the goto sites for uploading, I was spamming Youtube and confusing people. "Whoa you don't have to download?").
Gmail (had an invite system back then)
Can't think of anything music-wise. I usually just find out about music from hearing it somewhere rather than actively searching.
