Those are beautiful :,). I almost got a PRS as my first guitar, but I went back to the store and it just didn't sound like I wanted. Ended up with a Strat, but I'll always remember how it felt when I played it and I didn't feel like a total idiot 4 month guitar player with how easy it came to playing a PRS.

What pedals would you folks recommend? I just caught the bug and got a Big Muff Pi. Gosh, that thing sounds cool. I'm more interested in somewhat unusual pedals or quirky ones. My amp can do emulation on stuff like chorus and reverb.

I've heard H20 is cool, but it is expensive. Also, I've heard good things about the OCD.

Hey there, I took my new guitar and recorded a quick (well 20min) instructional video on how I personally 'broke out' of the Pentatonic Box after being stuck for like 10 years and unlocked the entire fretboard.

It's my first ever guitar video and I'd love to get some feedback on the approach. Have you learned in a similar fashion, are there any further tips, anything I forgot to mention or got wrong etc? I know the sound and image quality isn't perfect, sorry, but I'm hoping it's enough to understand what I'm trying to say. Any feedback is welcome, hell, maybe it even helps someone out there!

(Also, +1 on the Miku pedal hehe)

Man Nihil, that video is really helpful to my situation specifically. I find myself fucking about in the 'box' far too often, because the electric guitar isn't my main focus.

Your introductory riff sounds pretty scaly, though.

Hey, that's super awesome that the video can help you! I wish I had written out riffs but this was a spur-of-the-moment idea to record the lesson, so all the playing is improvised and I agree, it sounds pretty shitty haha, sorry!

Thanks, I'm still getting used to being able to play all around the fretboard! It's great but it takes some getting used to. I've been playing 'in the box' and right next to it for 10+ years haha. And I recorded that video a couple of days after I 'discovered' this way of learning the scale.

Next I'll be practicing three-note-per-string patterns to get into 'shredding' and improve my picking hopefully!

I think people are gonna say "don't buy a trash guitar its not worth it" so is there something you can recommend? I really don't want to pay more than £100 but could go £150 if there is literally no choice in the matter :/ and then get some 2nd hand amp or whatever from ebay for 10??

i thought maybe i shud ask for something i can plug my guitar into the computer

google tells me you can get a "usb audio interface" for just £5 off amazon

my local music shop probably has one for a lot more than that (if it has one)....the question is do i want one of those or a plain 10W amp? probably the usb thing.... shrug

If you're just trying to amplify your guitar and play it out of your computer speakers I'd recommend getting a "headphone amp" and plugging the guitar into the headphone amp into the speakers instead. If you buy a £5 "usb audio interface" I think it's likely you won't be getting the sounds you like.

Even if you can get a "High Z" audio interface you won't be going through any kind of pre-amplification which results in a gross sound. (in my opinion)

Honestly, isn't it pretty self explanatory that if you only learn one position of the pentatonic that you are going to be stuck in there? Of course breaking up the fretboard into 5 position to learn more easily is good advice but already common practice or not? Take my feedback with a grain of salt though, since I am only playing for about 8 months and while i know the e minor pentatonic and a few licks it's still very hard for me to do anything with it. Maybe you have some advice for that as well. How to actually make use of knowing the pentatonic.

The big thing is that playing over single box of any scale sounds much less musical than playing "horizontally" on the fretboad, moving up and/or down instead of just going to another string. That's why breaking up a scale and learning it in multiple positions is so important.

surprisingly i remember how to play a lot from that last 2 week period that i tried to learn acoustic: c, g, e, em, a, f#, d, bm (basically hotel california chords lol)

edit: looks like i made a mistake..... i have some notes slurred but i think they are playing almost every single note staccato + Show Spoiler +

....also they're using their little fingers a lot more than me

hey guys it suddenly occured to me that the guy in video is still using his little finger in places where i dont feel like i need to use it , but maybe its because i'm playing "flat fingered" instead of on my fingertips???

so i made this very quick clip, maybe you can tell me if i need to be playing on my fingertips and with my wrist further behind the guitar (which will make it harder for me and force me to use my little finger in spots where my 3rd finger can no longer hit), or if this is actually OK?

see at 26s the guy in video uses his little finger whereas i use my 3rd finger....
