What kind of amps should I consider for playing small to medium venues? I have a Vox multi-effect amp thing that's like 5 watts so it's fine for practice but obviously I need something a bit louder. I usually play post-punk, indie-rock sort of music.

I've never played one. All i know is that they are pretty high gain.

I'd say something around 15-40ish watts should do the trick. If you have the budget, definitely go tube over solid state. Depending on what sounds you prefer, you may want to go for a cleaner sounding amp like Vox or Fender, or something with more gain like Marshall. I've done a couple of gigs with an AC4 i borrowed but it was really small, and it definitely wasn't the best situation possible

Thanks, I'll see if I can try out something like a vox ac30 or fender twin reverb as I've heard good things about those amps.

I spent some time at the store and I've learned a bit about what I like.

Vox AC15 and AC30 both sound great! I tried a solid state Blackstar. I liked it, but I really prefer the tube amp sound. I should try another Blackstar made with tubes. I listened to the Mesa/Boogie Transatlantic. Damn, it sounded great. It's out of my price range though unfortunately.

I didn't like any of the Fenders or Marshall's I tried.

The AC30 is really loud though. Keep in mind that usually, with a tube amp, you need less wattage than with a solid state to achieve the same sound level.

Do Vox tube amps have a master volume?

I'm pretty sure the ones I tried had two channels. Normal which had no master volume and top boost which had master volume.

Finally got around to testing a bunch of guitars. I ended up with a 2013 Gibson Les Pual Studio. The thing just sang compared to the EC1000s' I also played. Alot of people give Gibson crap, I used to be a Gibson hater cuz they were super expensive and never as pretty as the same price counter parts.

What you guys think

As a huge Gibson fan myself, their new guitars are just absurdly priced, especially in the last couple of years. The 2015 lineup is particularly terribad, right now they are asking like 3k dollars for a new LP Standard which is just a joke.

That said, used (or older) Gibsons have very very reasonable price. There's some that are meh, but as with other instruments if you just play a few you'll find one that suits you. Gratz on your new guitar, black LP's are awesome Needs gold haldware though!

Yeah I notice a price jump in the 2015 models. I actually got my 2013 brand new .

EDIT: Also EMGs are sucky . They where really good for rhythm because they were super consistent, but no matter how I struck the pick it all sounded the same. Super disappointed. That was one of the main reasons for the Gibby orve r the LTD EC1000. Also I didn't like the Thinner body.

The JH isn't as bad. But, the passives felt natural. Basically I am no longer an EMG fanboy

I agree. Forcing the G-Force system on (most of) their 2015 lineup instead of proposing it as an option is also very meh.

And the new necks are unplayable imo. I tried a few and it was like i was playing my classical guitar, only worse in every possible way.

It's too bad because most of the guitars in the range are awesome, especially (imo) the Junior or the LP Deluxe (fuck yeah Thin Lizzy!). They just have idiotic features and ridicolous prices.

Yea the wide necks are silly on the 2015. And the whole jacking prices up and adding crap features is stupid. Their charging 2k for a bare bones Explorer

The Gibson Memphis lineup is pretty good though http://www2.gibson.com/Gibson-Memphis-2015.aspx
The prices are still excessive, but they are actually good guitars, and it's basically Custom Shop quality stuff from what i heard.

Also it's hilarious how they keep releasing "limited edition" models without the idiotic features. I wonder what happened in the last couple of months >.>

Haha i know right? Also their color choices for the new studios in 2014 and 2015 are getting really bad. everything from the body color and the plastics.

They are the best. Reminds me of that warm feeling you get on the inside.

Maybe I'm just retarded, but I actually like the way the Desert Burst looks (I have a Les Paul Studio in Fireburst myself, but with gold hardware). The other two are pretty ridiculous looking though. And the plastic is absolutely hideous. They even went with cheaper looking knobs on these newer models. In my opinion the black knobs only look good on the Ebony/Wine Red/Alpine White customs, but I guess that's subjective.

Overall not very impressed with Gibson's newer guitars. Overpriced and have mostly gimmicks. At this point I see no reason not to get a higher end Epiphone. Cheaper and without retarded features.
