Maybe I'm just retarded, but I actually like the way the Desert Burst looks (I have a Les Paul Studio in Fireburst myself, but with gold hardware). The other two are pretty ridiculous looking though. And the plastic is absolutely hideous. They even went with cheaper looking knobs on these newer models. In my opinion the black knobs only look good on the Ebony/Wine Red/Alpine White customs, but I guess that's subjective.

Overall not very impressed with Gibson's newer guitars. Overpriced and have mostly gimmicks. At this point I see no reason not to get a higher end Epiphone. Cheaper and without retarded features.

Totally agree.

The new necks are so bad too, I laugh that store review videos on 2015 Gibsons proclaim MOAR SUSTAIN and TONE!

I don't see prices going down, but I predict a huge revamp 2016. Don't know whats worst LTD Abalone on everything or Gibson Black knobs, classical necks, and Vomit plasitc on everything

2016? They are revamping their line right now:
http://www2.gibson.com/Products/Electric-Guitars/Les-Paul/Gibson-USA/Les-Paul-Standard-Golden-Pearl.aspx

The price is still goddamn stupid but at least it's a guitar worth playing

So, I'll be getting a second hand SE Torero next week. FR1000 tremolo, emg's 81/85. It will be my first guitar. I've done some research and it seems to be well liked by most people and they say it's great for metal so that's a plus.
Anyway, what do you guys think, is it a good choice? Oh yeah this thing will cost me 1000 bucks (everything costs double here, 1600 bucks for a new one so...)

Half the price of this guitar is going towards the EMG's and the floyd rose. Floyds can be a pain in the arse to keep in tune, and the effort required to restring and intonate for different tunings (maaaaany different tunings in metal) make it hard to recommend for a first guitar.

In terms of similar guitars you could go for that would be better value for money, I'd look at some of the other PRS SE models like the SE Tremonti Custom or a SE Custom 24 - or some of the Chapman guitars (ML-1 and ML-3 would be great for a beginner) that are made in the same factory as PRS SE's and have much better pickups (imo).

Has anyone played one of those ukulele-basses?

On paper, those are a dream come true. They're not really refined yet and I'm hesitant to get used to rubber strings, but if those become a real trend and more manufacturers build them, I could seriously into them as a second / third instrument.

Yeah PRS SE's are cool but i would definitely not recommend something with a Floyd for their first guitar, unless you have a guitar teacher that can show you how to set one up correctly and help if you screw up.

I just ordered a PRS SE Custom 24 Floyd as well REALLY looking forward to it, especially since I got a limited edition trampas green quilted maple. Pictures are DEFINITELY coming when I have it this weekend!

So much hype! Having my own PRS has pretty much always been a dream (even though it's 'just' a Korean-made SE and not a 3k$ American one). Those bird inlays...

Well, I do have a teacher and I've been doing some research since I've read everywhere that the Floyd is a pain in the ass to mantain if you are new to it. Tomorrow I'll get to see the guitar first hand. I'm going with a friend who knows way more about this stuff than me. So far apart from the Floyd complications and maybe the price, I've heard mostly good things about this guitar, we'll see how it goes.

I'd suggest acting slowly to pick a guitar. You will know when you have your hands on the right one. Any attempt to rush it will end up with you getting something you don't want.

I spent about 3 weeks trying different guitars at a local store thinking a stratocaster would be the one. I didn't try anything better than it, so I was thinking why not just go with that? Then I tried my reverend and I realized I found the right one for me.

Speaking of being slow to act... Still looking for an amp...

I've started into looking into building a cabinet. I'm thinking about building a cabinet and buying a mesa/boogie or orange head.

In my total noobness I can tell I want a guitar with the strings as close to the frets as possible... and that's about it.
Tried an Ibanez grg270 that was so bad in this aspect I just didn't want to touch it anymore. A friend told me that this guitar probably needed some tuning up. I guess the kind of tone I like will get figured out as I go...
Since I'm going to buy 2nd hand and in my city there's not much to go around, I have to travel 100 miles to the capital where most 2nd hand guitars are being sold. There's no point in buying new in my local store since they straight up rip you off by charging double or triple what you see on ebay and that pisses me off so... Luckily the guy that wants to sell the Torero has tons of guitars so maybe I'll get to try a couple more before deciding.

What you're describing with the height of the strings off the fretboard is called the guitar's "action".

High action = lots of twang, tight strings, hard to bend, fair distance off the fretboard.

Low action = less twang, easier to bend, low on the fretboard.

Generally speaking, Low action is the way to go for metal, high action is what you want for the blues.

The action on each and every guitar you try is adjustable, the guitar is a very flexible instrument. There's a long aluminium rod running through the neck of the guitar that can be adjusted to bend the wood in different ways, and the bridge can be raised or lowered.

I guarantee even on the shitty ibanez you tried you can get the action low and comfortable for metal. Don't count a guitar out because the strings are high. It can 100% be remedied.

Take the guitar you like the most overall, high or low strings, to a luthier and tell them you want a low action setup, and they'll know exactly what you're after.

I think when you pick your first guitar the most important thing is actually just the way it looks. You need quite a lot of dedication when you start, because at first it's kind of boring, and having a guitar that looks sexy as fuck to you helps a lot in just wanting to pick it up and practice.

That, and obviously the guitar needs to fit your style. I wouldn't recommend a gretsch to someone who wants to play metal

Congrats dude!. It looks beatifull. Enjoy!

So, I went to the guy's place yesterday, had the chance to see all the guitars he had for sale and try some of them. I finally settled for the Torero. It feels awesome to play and looks sexy as hell. Will post pictures once I take it home.

Thanks and congtats to you too, sir! Please do share pictures, I've always liked the Torero as well (it just seemed very hard to get a hand on here in Germany at the moment)!

Play the guitar, if you like it, keep it. Make sure you change the battery before you test it.

The internet is full of opinions. In all honest Floyds can be a pain, but you get used to working with one, and in all honest a FLoyd holds their tune pretty damn well.

EMGs are also in my opinion the SOUND for metal. Yes you can go passive, but Metallica uses EMGs, because it gives them the sound the want. Do they have their Pros and Cons? Yes, but so does everything in life.

Even though I got my GIbby Les Pual (Which plays and sounds great, don't jump on the Gibby hate train, play it first), I am already thinking about how to get a used Explorer and shove EMG 81/60 on it.

Sucks that it's soo expensive though, here in the US the 1000 series can range from 700-1000 USD, and depreciate pretty considerably. I can find like-new LTD 1000s for 400-500 USD here.

So... here it is guys.... My very first guitar. It comes with a killswitch and a little space carved in the 6th string in case I want to add a D-TUNA. It's funny, I tried it again today just to be sure but, since I can't play for shit (yet) I asked the dude to give it a real test and holy shit you guys! The sound is AWESOME. Anyways... sorry for the crappy quality, my tablet sucks for taking pictures hehe.
