The prequel of Spartacus: Blood and Sand
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1758429

First episode aired yesterday and it was pretty good. Explains a lot why Batiatus acted the way he did in Blood and Sand. Can't wait for next episode(s).

Yeah, it's good to see Ashur/Omaneus as gladiators, barcas back. Pity it will be only 6 episodes.

This being a prequel, do you think it is better to start with Gods of the Arena (haven't seen blood and sand yet)?

well gods of arena happened before bloods of sand in time line. So it wouldnt be that much of a problem. But easier way is just go and watch blood and sands. You wont regret it if you love blood and boobs.

Hmmm, I didn't even know they were making a prequel. I'll have to check it out though. I rather liked Blood and Sand. I didn't even know about it until a friend told me to check it out.

It's rather sad that the Andy Whitfield got diagnosed with lymphoma, got cured, had it return, and can't do season 2 though. I always hate recasts. It just never feels the same.

I'd prefer prequel first, but be aware there are MASSIVE spoilers if you watching from the very beginning of the first episode. So if you choose to watch prequel I'd start watching from 1m 55sec into the show (if your downloading it).
But starting with Blood and Sand probably is best because you never know if director chooses to put another spoiler in the remaining 5 episodes of the prequel.... Just start with Blood and Sand :D

I don't understand the magistrate. Why did he side with the kid? Did he secretly invest in him and just pretended to be on batiatus' side?

There's something for anyone. The thing that lured me in was defiantly dialogs and killer one-liners... in combination with all the pron and gore :D.

As much as I liked the first season, I really thought that it wrapped up like a series finale. I loved the show, but given that the main character got cancer, I think I'd rather let it die than ask for a season with a re-casted main character. That's just me.

Looking forward to this mini-series prequel, though. Haven't seen episode 1 yet.

Amazing show. There really was no other option but to make a prequel after the main actor got cancer. Hopefully he can pull through and continue on with the series. He plays an awesome spartacus.

Is it me, or does Xena look hotter this season then last?

Honestly I felt the first episodes of the mini-season prequel was really cheesy compared to season 1. Still enjoyable, but way overly cheesy, t.t

Yeah it does, he was making some good progress fighting that cancer. But I guess it took a bad turn, would have really liked to see him back as well.

Now, let us go back in time and read some TL.net opinions on the B&S:

On February 17 2010 04:45 Kennigit wrote:
I've been watching it. The CG is complete trash - the whole show feels like a really really low budget rip off of HBO's "Rome" (which was stellar). I don't know why they insist on having all the clouds sped up ....it completely ruins any semblance of immersion in the shots.

The acting isn't THAT bad, but the slow mo explosions of blood....lol. Yeah the show is pretty bad.

On February 17 2010 04:43 Drowsy wrote:
Very easily some of the worst acting in a television show I have ever witnessed. The first two episodes were fucking horrendously written as well. The dialogue and acting are both really terrible but the story seems to be getting better.

It's sort of like Rome's retarded cousin had a down's baby with 300.

Seriously, it's so god damn hard to watch it. You have to suffer the shitty, abundant, out-of-place CG all the time. The dialogue is bad, the acting is bad, fight scenes are bad (who the fuck makes this scenes with slow mo -> fast forward -> stop -> fast -> slow, so god dam annoying, and don't even get me started on blood sprays...), the guys who did the show apparently didn't bother to do their homework on history and geography either (talking about them running around half-undressed during winter, it's hardly possible where they are).

If you want to watch some fighting and gladiators, go and see Gladiator instead.
If you want the drama, tits and realism, go and see Rome.

So you've watched the first 1-2 episodes and then dropped the series? Good for you man.Unlike all other tv series, this one starts pretty weak. Other "popular" series make first 1-2 episodes of better quality to lure people in and the rest of the episodes are disappointing as they can be. This series (blood and sand) gets better and better with every episode and the season finale is probably the best finale of any season/series to ever air on tv.

I didn't say I dropped it. I merely stated it's crappy. I'm going to watch it regardless of that (I survived 3 seasons of Heros, I believe I can survive this too).
If it's going to get better then great, but if they keep up with the badly directed/edited combat scenes, ridiculous CG and cramming naked women onto the screen whenever possible I really can't see much hope for this series.
Time is precious. Waste it wisely.

Really enjoyed the second episode. They've done a good job with Oenomaus and especially Gannicus, quite enjoy those characters now. It's a shame this season is only 6 episodes.

Glad to see Batiatus has been a lier since the start, the entire scene with Oenomaus took me by complete surprise.

It's a shame the Climax will have to come within the next two episodes, the series was just starting to get good.

Wow, in my opinion this gods of the arena is 5x times better than blood and sand, at least so far.
I also really enjoy Gannicus, great character.

Also crixus is so much more badass in this show, i actually like him. Prob because of the beard and hair though.

Well, technically this was a pre-season, so the next one is still "Season 2". For those who don't know, the main actor for Spartacus (Andy Whitfield) came down with cancer, it went into regression, then came back in full force, and he retired from playing the role of Spartacus. He gave his consent to let the producers find a new actor, which they did, and filming has already begun, with plans for it to come out next January (Jan 2012). It should be a full, 12-episode season, which should take off from the end of season 1 (Blood and Sand). Gannicus has also confirmed that he is in season 2 (which makes sense, for those of us who have seen the last episode of the pre-season).

SO GOOD!!!!!!! (except for replacement actor, I'm pretty bummed about that).

I wish this stuff went faster.

Attican: The reason we have to wait is because Andy Whitfield came down with cancer, as fubsywubkis just wrote, hence this little pre-season without him.

Edit: Oh, almost forgot! Great ending on this pre-season. Really enjoyed it. =D

"The Bitter End" is a very nice finale episode of the prequel but it can not be compared to "Kill Them All" :D. Which imo is the best season/series finale of any tv show. All-in-all the prequel was pretty good, a nice 6 episode filler till we get S2.

Ya "kill them all" was fantastic because what show kills off half the cast they just spent the whole season introducing in a single show lol. BTW fuck Sparticus that whiny bitch! Its all about Crixus. Dude carrys the show. Crixus! Crixus! Crixus!!!!

I love this show. Although I do worry about the lack of John Hannah as he was pretty integral in both seasons.

Very much agree. Hopefully they find the same caliber of talent for season two.

I watched Gods of the Arena and it was really good, except for its ending spoiling seasons 1 ending that I have yet to see.

I hope the new Spartacus actor is as good as the guy who played in Blood and Sand (he has cancer). Initially my GF hated the series due to lesbian interaction, but after watching a few episodes I think she likes it even more than Jersey Shore. Actually in a rather large fight with her at the moment and I am deciding on whether or not to watch the finale of Gods of the Arena without her out of spite.

Hmm, decisions, decisions....

Yeah... I don't know how they will pull off Spartacus without John Hannah... Definitely my favorite character by a large margin.

Good luck!

BTW, someone suggested that I should watch Rome if I liked Spartacus? Can anyone confirm?

A guilty pleasure indeed. Blood & Sand was exceptional, I loved every minute of it. (then again, that was when I was at vacation in Turkey and got sick, so my opinion may be biased.)

Gods of the Arena kicked everything up a notch. Violence, sexyness, badassery. Watching Crixus rise up was pretty good as well as all the other sub character plots. I really loved it, such a shame it was only 6 episodes. They did tie up all the loose ends, and knit it all together well. Fight scenes were still meh, but I'll live.

What a way to end the season. They make you think Crixus is going to shank Gannicus all along, but then he's granted freedom! I think I like this way better, that way there is a glimmer of hope that Gannicus can make an appearance in Season 2. Spartacus + Crixus + Gannicus, the trifecta of awesome ^^.

Rome has an amazing storyline, much better than Spartacus! BUT the fighting is no where as cool as it is in Spartacus so i didn't like it very much, it focused more on the story than fighting so it wasn't as exciting for me! it's all about personal preference. Watch it and see for yourself!.

P.S: The finale was amazing, can't wait for season 2!, or maybe they will do a prequel of the prequel to show the shadow of death fighting animayes? :D.

Very surprised with the ending of the series

Totally expected Gannicus to die to Crixus. Cant wait to see him in the next series of Blood and Sand (I hope).

Great series really enjoyed it but yes John Hannah really did amazing work as Batiatus

Lets hope Liam McIntyre can pull off spartacus in season 2 (another australian ftw)

and will be glad to see more of Peter Mensah

I'm positive Gannicus will appear in season 2, afaik Crixus, Onomaeus and Gannicus were all generals of Spartacus during the Third Seville War. Season 2 will be fucking kick ass!

I only watched gods of the arena so I really didn't understand any of the first scene in the first episode and last scene in the final, I guess it has something to do with blood and sand? I really liked this series, the violence was not exactly needed at all times though.

The violence and sex was needed at all times to make it as authentic as possible. Many movies made about that time are often not showing the gruesome things that were normal in that time. However some parts were really harsch and gave me wtf moments, i think it really made the series stronger and foremost unique, a quality that speaks to all people.

I agree on some level. If you are doing a series about gladiators you of course need fights and blood, but is it really necessary to see a spearhead pierces a mans head and then be pulled to crack his skull open and his jaw dropped from his face while numerous liquids and blood flows down over his body, I don't know?

Also regarding the point about "capturing the time", this series gives only one side of it. The Romans were also known for their science, philosophy, debates, democracy etc etc - things that are not shown or represented.

Point taken, as those shots do not appeal to me as well. I think they made that shot just because there is so much violence in the show, they always look to take it a step higher. Since it was the season finale, i guess they wanted to be the final battle blow to overstep all others. It is really how every movie or serie works, overstepping past actions with greater action or plot. A serie taking this to far usually ends in anti climax, hence Lost or other numerous shows. This aside, because i'm kind of sailing of topic.

The show is about gladiators and its nature around it. The fact that beautiful things like that aren't shown is because they weren't in there environment. There are many other shows surrounding those subjects, and it just wouldn't have fitted in this one. In larger perspective, all movies and shows are lacking in showing its full image of the Roman time/empire. Maybe in the future a movie will arise showing its full glory and dark sides.

I have done this thing because it is just. Blood demands blood. We have lived and lost at the whims of our masters for too long. I would not have it so. I would not see the passing of a brother, for the purpose of sport. I would not see another heart ripped from a chest, or breath forfeit for no cause. I know not all of you wish this, yet it is done. It is done. Your lives are your own. Forge your own path, or join with us,

and together... WE SHALL SEE ROME TREMBLE!!!

Season 2 begin!

By Jupiter's cock your ideas are that of a slave himself. Why does thou want to be disillusioned with empathy and connectivity, when one can be promoted to glory and entertainment befitting of Emperors upon watching vast amounts of blood splashed along sand and breast alike.

Your very status amongst your brethren will be elevated when you orate your experiences of decapitations; dismemberments; bludgeoning and copious amounts of fornication that would make Mars and Venus themselves tremble in such awe and jealousy, more so than detailing your anguish and weepiness over such foolhardy notions of an "interesting plot and characters".

So after 2 seasons there were some very good and funny one-liners on the show. What do you guys think its the best one-liner?

I'll start off
Blood and Sand, very short scene with Batiatus

First time I saw this, i was like: pause, rewind 10-15 sec to watch it again, paused again and went on laughing for 2 good minutes before I resumed on with the episode :D.

I love Spartacus, except for the porn parts. To me it ruins the show. They just pull the scenes out of nowhere to get some more people interested in the series :/

HAHAHAHAHA YES! Lentelus is probably my favorite character despite all the gladiators being badass. The guy just has the best lines, BY JUPITER'S COCK!

My fiancee and I just watched the first 2 episodes of Blood and Sand last night. Great show, not least of which for the epic Lucy Lawless beeeewb!

When Peter Mensah (token black guy) walked on stage it took us a while to figure out it was a leather chestpiece and not an epic sculpture of a man's chest. Somewhat disappointing.
