The purpose of this topic is just to share with the rest of the community one of my hobbies, and possibly give you a chance to own a fairly cheap piece of the starcraft world(Or whatever else happens to cross your mind)
What is papercraft?
Papercraft is the art of turning sheets of paper into 3D artwork. It combines aspects of 3D modeling, finger dexterity and skill all into one. It is a time consuming hobby that can give a sense of great satisfaction when what you wanted to create comes into fruition.
![[image loading]](http://imgur.com/3l926.jpg) arguably one of the things I'm most proud of, 1 month of work, water bottle beside to give scale.
Sounds cool, what do I need?
All it takes to get started is a printer, some scissors, glue, and time. Most papercrafts come in various formats. The most common ones are jpeg, pdf, and .pdo Adobe reader and Pepakura are the programs you need to open .pdf and .pdo respectively. When printing, take care to ensure that in printer settings all pages are scaled the same, otherwise when fitting parts together they may not fit well.
If you are serious about taking this up as a habit, additional materials can make life much easier and make work look that much better. Scissors are good, but they do not provide the precision necessary for clean corners and cannot cut in the middle of a sheet without first bending the paper. Also, printing onto card stock is much better than normal printer paper. Cardstock is thick enough to support its own weight, and with a straight-edge, can bend extremely well.
Below is a picture of my tools. 12"x18" cutting board, xacto blade refills, xacto knife, heavy duty blades(these are EXTREMELY sharp, exercise caution especially when using these blades, they can cut paper simply with the weight of the knife), utility knife, steel edged ruler.

Where can I download some to try?
http://paperkraft.blogspot.com/ has many models available with some searching. Of course, since this is a starcraft site I'll link some of the currently available models

Best of luck and happy folding/glueing

This looks pretty interesting and fun, I might just have to try the immortal one.
How long have you been folding/glueing paper into art like this?
|
OMG Is that the freaking ship from FFX ? How awesome is that!
Sadly I'm not even gonna try something of this caliber since I do not have requirements such as skills and especially patience... but I'm content to see such good artworks anyway.
Thank you for sharing and sorry for not contibuiting with paperworks of my own.

I have half a suit of Spartan armor done... but then I realized how much a cubic foot of meltable plastic cost.

I would love to be able to make that immortal. Is there any beginner ones you would suggest and don't they come with instructions or is it pretty easy to put it all together? Guess I got some stuff to add to my shopping list.

I'll try and keep the OP updated on models as they come out, although as you might guess it is rather difficult to model yourself. I've tried.
I've been doing papercraft for about 5 years now. The models are fairly self-explanatory, and while some of the hardest papercrafts I wouldn't try right off, the starcraft ones that I have done are fairly easy. The starcraft ones come in pepakura format which is a model viewer + 2D sheet of paper view. By mousing over the 2D you can see what edges align and where it is on the 3D model. Some major things to keep in mind is to think about which way you want to close the model off aka. don't paint yourself into a corner. This just comes with practice.

Sweet pic, wish i were artistic and crafty enough to even think of attempting to try this, not going to lie epic as hell... if you really want to top the charts i would suggest oragami, just a suggestion and again i suck at art haha

Ohh these are awesome! I made a few WoW themed papercraft models a while back, but nothing that complicated. Your ship turned out really great!
(If anyone makes a SC2 probe model, I'm going to be allll over that.)

I have been papercraft for a couple years now. It's a great hobby. Here are some of the things I have made, since I am narcissist when it comes to papercraft.
Swordfish II from Cowboy Bebop

Canti from FLCL

I am debating between some of the new SCII papercrafts that have been posted recently. Immortal looks easy and fun to make. Then again, the Battlecruiser looks so badass.

I've made a couple of the pokecraft ones because they were easy to do, but I've given them all away to friends already.
Edit: another good site is papercraftmuseum.com, which also contains some tutorials.
