It's relatively new. For some reason people favor the 555 and 595 heavily over the 515, and I think the same is true for the 558 and 598 over the 518. I suspect the pricing is not very good. headphone.com prices are generally not that good overall too. HD 595 for a while was selling under $150, for example, to make room for the 598. The 5x5 are discontinued now though and harder to find. Headphones pricing just tends to fluctuate. Right now I think the Shure SRH840 (closed though, in case you were looking at the HD 518 because it was open) at $129 would be a good choice: http://www.amazon.com/Shure-SRH840-Professional-Monitoring-Earphones/dp/B002DP8IEK

I have a asrock h61m-vs with 5.1 surround sound. I plan on buying the HS1A corsair gaming headset over the HS1. Now the HS1 has lets say a built in soundcard to get the dobly digital sound. Now, im wondering how i can get the dolby digital sound with the HS1A i have VIA HD audio deck the onboard sound is the VIA VT1705 Will the sound be similar to the HS1 or would i need a better sound card? I hear HS1 drivers are bad

- cares a lot about comfort (huge head and GLASSES -- many, many headphones push the metal from my glasses into my head and thus i cannot tolerate them for any longer than a few minutes) - wants to spend USD ~$50>=

If you want Dolby Headphone or other processing, you need a dedicated sound card. Asus Xonar DG is the cheapest one with that I think, but the H61M-VS has no PCI slot. Asus Xonar U3 is about $40 and has that. I'm sure some Creative or HT Omega or others have Dolby Headphone as well, but I can't remember which off of the top of my head. It just connects with USB, and it's probably better than whatever the HS1 is bundled with...though honestly for a gaming headset of that price range, they'd be correct to bundle a cheaper device since the headset itself would be more of a limiting factor. Kind of hard to guess how good the onboard sound (or most anything else) compared to something else. Listed specs may not be achieved in practice because of all the noisy crap inside a computer, and they don't list enough relevant specs to get a good idea of much of anything. Generally don't buy a gaming headset and be expecting great sound quality for the price (the microphone, marketing, and "gamer markup" cost money, after all, and sound quality is not the focus). @isparavanje: Screw the haters, Essence STX counts as a real amp. Price is relatively low compared to the competition because unlike most audiophile companies, Asus is not a hack job, and separately from that, they move a larger volume of product and have real manufacturing facilities, so production costs are lower. You won't get exotic designs or tube "flavors" from them though. Not all the products are necessarily great values though. @annul: How thick are your glasses? I'd look at the JVC HA-RX700 in that price range normally. Earcups are pretty large and are okay. They're surprisingly sturdy for the price, though i only spent like half and hour with them, so I wouldn't know about long term use. IIRC they would work okay with glasses, but I'm not sure since I don't wear them. Bass is a bit bloaty (and a bit emphasized), but that's kind of expected for the price. They're better than most at around that price though. You can also look at earpad-style headphones that sit on top of the ears rather than around. Beyerdynamic DT-235 is around that price and is fairly refined and high-end for that price. It's probably a bit bass-light for some, but many other headphones would be worse offenders. There's also IEMs. Plenty of good models around $50 or less these days, though I don't know too much which are which. @Jaeger: I dunno, but AKG K240S (Studio) is always around $100, and people pay a lot more attention to the 2xx models than the 1xx models. I'm not sure if that means the 1xx models are just criminally overlooked, or if they're just worse and not worth considering since the price difference is not huge. K240S, K240 MKII, and K242 HD are supposed to all be the same, just different models come with different combinations of ear pads and cords. So I wouldn't think the K142 HD would be a steal at just $20 less. @Chaoz: HD 280 is 64 ohms, 102 dB SPL / 1V rms (equivalently, a pretty quiet 89 dB SPL / 1 mW), if you take Sennheiser's spec at face value. This means that at the same output level, many other headphones will sound louder. More technical details here: http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/09/more-power.html An amp would make them louder if that's what you want. But some amps may not have sufficient gain or more output power compared to what you currently use.

I want one with REALLY good bass, and everything else good as well, but I am looking for a pair with extra bass. I don't want crappy brands like Skullcandy, but the real ones, like audio technica, Monster, Sennheiser, etc. My price range is 150-200 dollars, that seems like a good price range for a good pair of earphones. I'm looking at the Monster Turbines, but they look really heavy and I don't they will be to comfortable when I'm playing. Also, I don't want those in ear monitors, where the wire goes over your ear and everything. I'd prefer them to be small, again like earphones that people would wear under the headphones in the GSL. Thank you, if you actually read this. :D

Grado SR-60s Pros: Amazing sound at all volumes. Comfortable. Thick cable. Cons: More sound leakage than any other pair of headphones I've ever owned! I just don't use these in public because of that. Sony XBR-500 Pros: Comfortable. Provides good sound reproduction with a little emphasis on bass (not overwhelming or unnatural though). Cons: The headphone cord is much too short. I had to buy a headphone extension cord for this one. I use it at work all the time.

That is interesting, the SR-80is that I own were extremely uncomfortable. (I sold them recently.) They did sound good though.

Im running the 770pro/80 through the Sound Blaster Fatality sound card. with no amp right now. My questions are, should i keep the DT770pro/80 and get an amp for them? if so what amp (would like to spend $150 usd or less) Should i bring the 770pro/80 back and ask for the 250ohm version? Im sure i will need an amp with these and which amp should i purchase? (again less than $150 usd) Ive done a little bit of looking around but i dont see prices on alot of these AMP's.. some people from Head-fi say META42.. Seems i would have to build that one i think. My main problem is finding prices on these things.
