I am currently using Sennheiser HD595s with an Audio-gd FUN for my desktop setup. However as I am headed back to college in a few weeks, I am looking for a decently priced IEM ($100-125) for on-the-go listening as well. I really don't know anything about "portable" audio or IEMs.
Any recommendations?

This is a cheaper variant (in build but not sound quality) of the Sony EX1000 which is considered one of the best non-custom IEM's currently available.
The main differences are the EX600 uses a plastic housing whereas the EX1000 uses a magnesium alloy, as well the EX600 cords are non-detachable.

Every time I think about this thread I'm kindly greeted with the same poll I own some mid-level level music headphones from Grado, Sennheiser, Audio-Technica, etc. I have a "gaming" headset.
I've realized how much Music and sounds plays such a huge part of my life, and I never really got a gaming headset I feel like I have to ask (Sorry if this has been asked before, but there's way too much in this thread with many scattered subjects). Are "gaming" headsets actually good? How about the steel series headsets? My first 'premium' audio equipment was a pair of Sleek SA-6 (decent IEMs), and soon after I got a pair of RE-ZERO (more IEMs... but this was a recommended pair). In addition, I've got Audio Technica ATH-AD700 (Open Cans) that I use. The recent sale/promotion on SteelSeries products is tempting to get something but I let's try asking; Any opinions from other picky audio experts?

I got the same ones and they are the best headphones I've ever owned. (granted, I've only really owned crappy headphones before these ones =P)

It never hurts to try new things if you can and you might end up with a different opinion than most people, but those who have listened to plenty of gaming headsets and compared them to music headphones of comparable prices tend not to favor the gaming headsets (even for gaming, unless convenience of the microphone outweighs positional audio information for the game being played). Even considering the cost of a potential microphone, sound quality is generally worse for gaming headsets.

Gaming headsets are good, but to me headsets are not headphones. I use my Grado and Sennheiser headphones for .flac music and watching movies. I'll use my Logitech Z-5500 speakers for games.
The Grados and Sennheisers just sound so much better then my Logitech Z-5500 speakers in terms of sound quality; I honestly can't listen to music with the Z-5500s with my headphones available. It's actually hard to tell the difference between an .mp3 and a .flac...at least for me.
Now I don't actually have a headset but I used a friend's at his house (Steelseries 7H). A headset is in the same boat as the Z-5500s for me. It's sound quality is quite poor and shabby, but I don't think games put up enough quality in the audio for it to matter. I'll use my audiophile stuff sometimes just because people complain about the feedback in vent when I use the speakers and it doesn't make too big of a difference.
Gaming headsets are good pieces of equipment. They have a mic built in and they're comfortable and they get the job done. They're just bad music headphones. I entered the Steelseries thing anyway, it's free stuff. I'm not saying their stuff is bad, but again to me headsets are not the same as headphones. Different purposes although they can be used for the opposing reason.
I choose the Sibera V2 cause they look sweet (white!) and heard they're a great headset. If I win it I'm sure as hell not going to listen to music with them though.

I have a pair of sennheiser HD201S, I know they are the low end of audio headphones, but I used them and a nice 100 dollar speaking mic to replace my broken plantronics 10 dollar usb pos... I have to say that the difference is night and day and I can never go back now ^^

I own 2 sets of these actually, one for my computer and one for my Ipod, awesome headphones

I just got my M-50 Needless to say, I need to get an E5 amp to offset the headphone's recession in the midrange.

Wait what? What's an E5 or any other amp (without some mids-boost EQ) got to do with that?

Well, E5 is better than a lot of crap out there. They just released an E6 which is supposed to be slightly better yet at about the same price btw (supposedly better performance of pre-amp section, a few more options, better ergonomics, but plastic rather than metal construction):

You're looking for different headphones or some kind of software (generally music player) EQ setting, if you want louder mids. Note that increasing volume isn't necessarily what you are looking for. Some software EQ is not implemented very well.
I think this foobar plugin (of course only valid if you use foobar) is well regarded, though you can also try VST plugins and such if you really want to: http://www.foobar2000.org/components/view/foo_dsp_xgeq

If you're producing, you probably don't want to use headphones? (unless maybe just for tracking) If you've already got speakers and are looking for headphones to use on the go or in other circumstances, you may want to look for popular headphones models that others may be familiar with, to be more of a "standard" reference set. e.g. Sennheiser HD 600 or 650, Beyerdynamic DT880, possibly AKG K701 depending on your music, and so on.

I just canceled my E5 order and got E6 instead (hopefully the $5 price increase's gonna be worth it ) I hope that with some burn in, the sound stage's gonna scale better or I will eventually learn to live with it lol. Edit: I have a question. What's LOD (Line Out Dock) ? What does it do? Is it necessary to use it with an amp? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new closed-back pair of headphones to use at work. (not a big fan of IEMs, and I can only bust out my HD 238 when the boss is out)
And I've narrowed down my choices to three: Shure SRH-440. AudioTechnica ATH-M50, Sennheiser HD 448.
What would you guys recommend? My music source is an unamped cowon j3. As for the music I listen to, it has a wide range: there's some k-pop, some metal (power, melodeath, progressive, industrial), and some electronica.

i had a pair of these but sat on them so came here looking for something new + Show Spoiler +

Right now I run Sony SA-5000's with a really heavy DAC and amp I built all myself. Unfortunately I think I gotta sell it for tuition . Super depressing since I put a fucking lot of hours into it. Anyone interested in a top end custom built rig?

Hi folks,
I've been reading through the thread here and am feeling a bit overwhelmed by the amount of information. Here is my situation and what I'm looking for, perhaps some of you can help.
1) I know very little about audio technology.
2) My would-be headphones would be used for listening to music when I'm at work, and then mostly gaming at home. When I'm listening to music I generally listen to trance, although sometimes I'll throw in a rock album here and there.
3) I want something comfortable that won't hurt my ears or head after hours and hours. I currently have a crummy $40 gaming headset and they're just not very comfortable. My ears a tiny bit to big for the pads so they get crushed a bit, and they're just a bit too small for my head.
4) My head is huge. I have trouble finding sunglasses and hats that fit. This makes it a little harder to find headphones that fit, too, so I need something that is known for being very adjustable and comfortable.
5) I'd like a set that completely covers my ears and can drown out ambient noise a bit, although I don't really need any active noise canceling technology.
6) I'm willing to spend money if it's worth it. $150-$200 would probably be my upper limit, although I'd be open to arguments that I should get something more expensive if it would really be worth the investment.
7) My work computer has just basic on-board audio, so I can't get something that requires getting a special sound card or otherwise modifying my work rig.
8) I'm fine getting a separate microphone for gaming. A suggestion there would be helpful as well.
Thanks!!
