Rock on. I had a set of HD595's go bad in December; sent them in for repairs, and discovered than they had been discontinued/replaced with HD598's. Sennheiser, being awesome as hell, sent me a pair of 598's to replace my 595's - free of charge Didn't even pay shipping.
The 598's are a very nice set of headphones. The AKG's would produce a bit more throaty low end. The 598's are incredibly transparent. I really like the open ear design.

Noob question: For a first set of decent headphones for a rock/hip-hop/trance enthusiast would a pair of M-50s and a fiio desktop amplifier be a good investment?
|
So, I'm going to buy my first good headphone. And I'm going for a AKG K-77, I made some research and find out this is a pretty confortable 50 bucks range headphone.Any tips? Or should I buy another one instead?

@Dakure:
Aside from the AD900, in that price range, also look at the Sennheiser HD 598 and maybe AKG K601/701 for fullsize open headphones. Closer to $300, the Sennheiser HD 600.
@Alabasern:
The guide seems very strange. Anyway, K701/K702's sound (or many headphones) is definitely not for everyone. Make sure there is a return policy or that you give a good listen before buying.
You may want to check the specs of the ART HeadAmp4, but in general a 4x headphone amp distribution device at that price point is probably not what you're looking for. Since it's a pro audio product, I suspect the output impedance may be a little high. The pro audio devices tend to be that way frequently. It may not be any better than the integrated amp in whatever you're currently using.
If you take HeadRoom's measurements at face value (consistency is difficult for sure), see here: + Show Spoiler [FR graph] +AKG K701 has most rolled off bass.
@Passo:
People say that most amplifiers already work reasonably well with the ATH-M50 so getting a dedicated amp may not be important. On paper the specs are pretty easy to drive.
If you don't already have a dedicated sound card or device with a good line out, if you want to spend money on something, the FiiO E7 would be a better investment than the E9 since the E7 is both a DAC and an amp. With the E7, you would bypass whatever integrated audio output chip you're currently using. The E9 would just amplify whatever source you're using, which potentially could be bad.
The E7 and E9 amps are of similar quality. Actually, the E7 is arguably superior. The advantage of the E9 is that it's much more powerful, but the E7 already has enough power for the ATH-M50, so the E9 doesn't have an advantage for a headphone like that.
For those genres, the headphones should work well. There are many ATH-M50 fans, some who have posted in this thread.
@antilyon:
I'm not sure why, but for some reason AKG's cheaper headphones (lower than K240) don't seem to be that popular. Maybe they're not that good, or maybe they're just overlooked.
The most popular model in that range is the JVC HA-RX700, which are a little cheaper. The old Sony studio cans, the MDR-V6, are a little more expensive. Sennheiser HD 428 may be around the price too.

My Sennhieser HD515's are on there way. Can't wait :D

I just got my first headphone amp (E9), and wow what a difference they made with my HD595's. I seriously regret not getting an amp sooner.. I ran these headphones without one for 3 years.

Hi, I am new to heaphones (and, really, audio in general), and I was wondering if any of you had a recommendation on some cheap headphones (~$100 or less). I want to have the best sound possible, so I thought to ask here rather than go just based off of on-site reviews. Any suggestions?

What kind of headphones are you looking for? (In ear, earbuds, over-ear) What kind of music do you listen to?
There's a lot of headphones out there, and it's nice to know what you want before you buy; don't just go on price for suggestions.
For some general suggestions: In-ear I suggest RE0, I haven't heard them myself but the reviews are pretty much all very positive / great sound for the price.
If you want cans, you have a good amount of choices at that price range. I've heard the HD555s and they are pretty good; I think the AD700 is a good choice in that range as well (again, haven't heard it myself) I remember to AD700s being a lot more expensive but now they're sub-100 range so that's always good

Decided to chime into this thread to post these babies: (Fischer FA-003)

Got them a month or so back, and they are just lovely. If it weren't for my damn glasses, I could wear these all day and not have any stress on my ears. Coupled with a FiiO e7 and it sounds awesome, pretty balanced sounding. Soundstage is fantastic.

I just ordered a pair of Sennheiser HD 448's and a SteelSeries Siberia USB Sound Card. The sound card is essential for the mute button because I'm an avid stream spectator and dos' fucking ads... Fuck you Bing!
Anyway, I'm a proud owner of some low tier cans. I can't wait to listen through the Doom Metal thread again and post new reviews.

Bought some Grado SR-60i a couple of days ago. Plays pretty well. But it made me realize how crappy most of my mp3s are, and updating them is a shit ton of work.

Spent the past couple of days going through this thread and it seems like the Audio Technica ATH-A700 seems to fit my needs the most (good value for money, closed cans). I guess I was just wondering if they're relatively portable?
|
You're better off getting the ATH-ES7's if you want portables
|
My brother bought the Wow Headsets (link).
That was my first encounter with "decent" headphones. My question is, does anyone know how much an equivalent in sound quality set of earphones (not IEMs) would cost?
Or even better, recommend me some models?
I would appreciate it if you'd PM me if you can help me. Thank you.

Live Music: Drums are really, really loud, so this was a huge investment for me. I went with the JH16 earbud monitors, and I use some industrial grade noise canceling muffs over top. Best money I have ever spent. + Show Spoiler +
Mega jelly. I have some questions for those. How much did you pay nad how and where did you get the custom ear mold done?

I'm not actually looking for something to use every day, day to day, because earphones are still more convenient for me. It'll be mostly for plane, long journeys etc.
EDIT: day to day I mean carry, I'll be using them mostly on my computer.
