My solution: FiiO E10. Like I stated before, it is a cheap solution that will fit all your needs for a helluva long time considering FiiO is known for great customer service and quality products at every price point. If the problem is just low volume on onboard audio (which we're assuming doesn't have other issues), E5 would fix that. It can be used always plugged in. As long as the battery is full or pretty much full, there's not much noise due to the charging circuit. It's not like you're required to replace the onboard audio in a desktop system.
That said, for around $100 I agree with FiiO E10. As long as you're not looking at powering HiFiMAN HE-500 (not to mention HE-6) or 600 ohms non-Tesla Beyerdynamics and so on, to very loud volumes, it should be decent enough for a long while without needing an upgrade.
I also agree with car A/C in Arizona being a priority. x_x

But if the distortion is due to clipping because the amplifier is set to a gain that can allow for high volumes with poor SQ. A E5 will just amplify that distortion, in essence double amplifying the bad sound signal. Trash in, trash out I say.

The distortion (or some kind of bad sound) was on the C-Media-based SIIG sound card, which had enough volume. The onboard audio was just quiet. I was talking about amplifying the onboard audio.
For future reference, on a side note, "trash in, trash out" and double amping tend to be misunderstood a lot. + Show Spoiler [side note] +Suppose that one device has high distortion running headphones. This doesn't necessarily mean that it has high distortion when instead connected to the line input of another device like an amplifier. A line input has an impedance of thousands of ohms, so it's a much easier load to drive than headphones are. A trash output (for headphones) can be a good output to another amp. Once you connect an amp, you may no longer have "trash in", so to say. If it was the source's D/A that sucked, then there's nothing to be done though.
It's also very possible that the amp output will clip at a given volume setting into headphones, particularly low-impedance headphones, but not when driving a line input.
Anyway, double amping is often not such a big deal because even poor amplifiers are okay at driving line inputs. Depending on your perspective, you can think of the insides of mixers and other pro audio gear in the studio as having dozens of amplifiers inside—something recorded in the studio passes through a pre-amp and all sorts of other op amps and devices, so that's double / triple / whatever amped already. Most of the degradation in the audio chain comes from the headphones or speakers anyway, and maybe a bit from the amp driving them (since that one has by far the hardest job), or a really sucky D/A.
People tend to ignore or misunderstand that the load makes a huge difference. They just think about Amp 1 (how bad it is driving headphones) and then Amp 2 (driving headphones). When you connect Amp 2 to Amp 1, then Amp 1 may no longer suck nearly as bad as when it's responsible for actually driving headphones.

Headphones: Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO - 250 OHM. Amp/DAC: Fiio e10
Awesome. Not done breaking them in yet, but already amazing. So Happy I bought them, and at a very affordable price too.

You guys made a poll out of this?
Headphones: 10 bucks, Target.

Anyone know anything about the AKG Q 701, they look so cool, but since they are quite expensive, i was wondering if you would recommend them. I like the way they look ( the lime ones) , and i keep seeing the AKG brand in several movies containing dj's (it's all gone pete tong etc) so if you know about someone that looks just as cool, at the same (or preferably lower) prize. Thanks TL'ers!

After burning over two thousand bucks into headphones during university, and after buying ~100 RMB (~16 USD) headphones here in China, I realized that I was fucking stupid and got ripped off in such intensity.
Reasoning is, after listening to hundreds of different headphones, the conclusion is that for a $800 pair of headphones, the audio quality is 9/10, and for a cheaper good quality (so nothing like Monster or Bose) $40 pair of headphones, the audio quality is 8.5. After you go over a certain (quite low) price range, the audio quality increase per dollar becomes minutely tiny.
Blind-fold tested so called "audiophile" friends. Couldn't tell my 4 pairs of headphones differing over $500 in price apart for their life.
Yah, never buying another pair over $50 ever again. Sticking with this $9 SenMa Chinese brand for now.

I have heard good things about them. Though, many recommend that you spend a little more and go for the 702's.

702? AFAIK there's only a K701 and K702 (different color, detachable cable), then a Q701 with the Quincy Jones branding. There may or may not be changes to the drivers between the K models and the Q model. Or maybe adding the Q logo on the venting to the cups changes the sound slightly. As it typical, people say the newer Q model is better; interpret that as you will.

I'm considering to change my Creative FAtal1ty headphones and move into something more high end price like sennheiser pc350, any suggestions or ideas?

I would always recommend going for a pair of headphones and a standalone mic, rather than going for a headset. You won't regret

I started out with Grado sr80i and loved them. Then I got my hands on an asus xonar st sound card, as well as sennheissers hd650. Don't think I'll need to upgrade anytime soon because it sounds phenomenal.

I've heard of 2 or 3 decent headsets, which were basically decent headphones released with a mic attached, but they were discontinued a while ago. If you want sound quality, there are essentially no options with integrated mics.

Kinda feel like I'm gonna be crucified for asking this here, but has anyone tested the razer Tiamat 7.1?
I've been thinking about getting it for a while but its non stop out of stock. Is it worth the price or is its your standard overpriced gaming gear? If so any basic recommendations in that price bracket? (150-200$)

Can anyone recommend me a good pair of earphones for under $100? Based on my search people say this is the best bang for the buck: http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-S4i-Premium-Noise-Isolating-3-Button/dp/B00264GYMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1337600997&sr=8-1
I'm just looking for a pair of earphones for listening to music while walking around and stuff. Can anyone who owns a pair of s4is give me their input and is it comfortable? Also do these fit well on small ears? I'm not an audiophile but I want to invest in a pair of earphones with decent sound however comfort and fit comes first though.
I'm open to other recommendations.
Thank you!
This might be a dumb question but can IEMs damage your hearing even if you listen to it at normal volumes? These things go deep inside your ears and seal off outside sound so I'm just a little wary. On the contrary IEMs might protect your ears better than normal earphones (for example apple earphones) because you can listen at lower volumes due to the noise-canceling, am I right?
edit: sorry if this is a repeat question I'm pretty sure there's been a discussion on this but 160+ pages are way too many to go through.

This is true. Because of the different target for the products, good headphones won't have mics. And btw, you can get a cheap clip-on mic, or just one to stand on your desk for very little money.

Seriously after having my Sennheiser HD800, I dont feel like listening to anything else.
They are way better than my HD595s, and they are much better than my in ear Westone 3 earbuds. I have headroom ultra dac/amp at home, and at work I use the Fiio E17.
I been bring it to work, but three problems. 1. The sound bleeds out like crazy and the old lady next to me keeps complaining. 2. Gotta be careful transporting it to and from work. 3. Its a big distraction because everyone comes ask me what it is.
