Well, when I was like 12 I wanted to create a secret underground illegal hacking site (still a dream). But I couldn't think of a name... what was a good name for that kind of thing?
Something to do with pirates? -- No no, the PirateBay got me there.... Ninjas? -- No no, too cheesy and obviously the opposite of pirates... KillDeathRotFaceWin? -- No no, too many letters...
Huh. So, like any clever 12 year old, I went... directly to my mother: Me: "Mom, I want to.. uh.. make a website, what should I name it?" Mom: "[My mom's real big into orchids] Hmmm, how about OrchidWeb?" Me: "Um. How about something... like... Cyber.... Cyber something." Mom: "Oh, how about CyberDevil?" Me: "...." Me: "INGENIUS"
So I stuck with that for a while. My first and only WoW character was named that, and I stuck with it for a while. Then I realized I sounded like some 12 year old boy who asked his mom for an ID. So I switched it up to CyberDemon. This was marginally better. But finally, after some mental deliberation, I decided.. you know what? Cut off half the goddamn letters I get something pretty cool: CyDe. GenoCyDe. XenoCyDe. Cy-ani-De. I fucking loved it; simple, and gets the point across.
Plus, it adds this nice little dynamic of interest in pronunciation. Some people, in fact most people, are under the impression that because I capitalized the D it means you have to enunciate it more or something. Sigh-Dee. But no.. it's actually Sighed. or Side. But all pimped out.
So there is the story of my name. So if my YouTube channel ever gets incredibly famous, then people will not have to spam the comments. And maybe some random hot chick will come into the room right now and start... you know... spreading like Leenock spreads his drones.

Accidentally made my first user name my IRL name, expected that to be the name tagged onto my Bnet account, not my SC2 account. Was liking Protoss when the name change was offered, and when you warp in units, they make a little blue box.
Hence, TheBlueBox.

I went to school with a guy named MichaelDonovan in middle school and I hated his guts so I stole his name. I usually go by MickyD in game. Most people think my name is about hamburgers and fries, so they think I'm fat or something.

Lanfear is a character in a series I read (Wheel of Time). Lan is also a character. So my name is:
1) Lanfear 2) Lan's fear (which is funny because Lan is basically completely fearless) 3) fear of LAN (LAN being Local Area Network in this case)
With embellishments, of course.

My name is Musashi but it is always taken so sometime I go by Takezou instead. The kanji (chinese characters) for Musashi and Takezou are the same. Also, the samurai Musashi who I was named after was originally called Takezou.

I have always tried to use a nick that would be mostly uncommon, so it can be used on most sites/games/etc.
As a kid I went by the name 'Bakkula' and can still be found using it in some games where people have known me for some time(or my current nick is not available). And yeah im a nerd, If you know Enterprise you know who the actor Scott Bakula is. I just added a extra k.
I decided that i wanted something with a different sound. This was around the time when I was playing CoD:UO. And was always prone to sounds that roll off the tongue or have that neat middle of the mouth feel, like the 'Sch' sound. After about 10 minutes or so of saying random crap outloud, I came to Schmo, then Schmoozer. I thought it was cool enough so i slowely started using it.
Its actually silly how wierd it feels to change what you use for your online identity.

I liked Gundam Wing when it first aired on Cartoon Network when I was in 6th grade. All of the Gundams in the movie Endless Waltz were custom models so my first AIM screen name in like 2001 was CuSToM VaYeaTe. Vayeate wasn't a Gundam but just some random mobile suit in the show so I thought it was cool. I also was obsessed with alternating capital letters when I was in middle school.
Sometime after that, around when Lord of Destruction came out, I managed to get the original "custom" account on battle.net. All of my characters were like custom_fury, custom_trap, custom_magic all in annoying alternating letters. I also used "custom" for Reign of Chaos and some of Frozen Throne. I had like a thousand smurf accounts in Frozen Throne and the only incentive I had to play in like 2003 was collecting icons, so after a while I stopped making new accounts and stuck with an account that had the most wins of the race I decided to make as my main which was Undead. It was a bullshit account name that I didn't use for anything else.
When World of Warcraft came out I played with a bunch of stupid RPG sounding names, until I started raiding with my real life friends and wanted the rest of the guild to call me by my real name. My name is Marty so all of my characters would be like Martysdruid, Martysdk, Martysshaman etc.
Starcraft II came out and I thought Marty made for a really lame ID for an RTS game and I never had a cool one that stuck since Custom since my Warcraft III one was stupid, so I went back to it with the annoying alternating letters.

I've been through many aliases as I was growing up and emerging in competitive gaming. One day I was playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory and somebody in my clan described me as the eliminator since I was good at hunting down one person that was stopping us from completing an objective. So, being the 12 year old professional that I was, I shook things up a bit and made it Elimin8oR. Once I got into Quakeworld and Counter-Strike: Source I was getting a fair amount of hate for it (generic and clearly made when I was a kid) so I shortened it to just four letters: eLim. This got me by pretty well as it didn't seem too popular and was also mile backwards Then there was a phase in CEVO CS:S where people would end their aliases with ski, ske, skii, zke and zki. So I chose zkE, and put it on the end. elimzkE. I use that now in StarCraft II, but I still use eLim in Quake Live.

This thread is genius! When I was in middle school I definitely considered myself a hardcore gamer sick nerd baller(in so many words). My original ID on SC1 was just Pro with a couple umlauts thrown in or some shit, but I felt the need for something else. So I thought about it, pondered, ruminated, etc, and came up with baller as an excellent addition to my already illustrious moniker. Proballer all up in this thread.

A while back I used to go by the name Juno. I stole it from the lead protagonist in Jet Force Gemini. In that game Juno is actually male. When I found out the original source of the name Juno was an ancient Roman goddess of fertility, I kinda felt weird about it, but stuck with it because Jet Force Gemini was so awesome.
Then Juno came out. You know, the one with Ellen Page, who is a total hottie, Michael Cera, who I think sucks at acting, and some old self-upholstered chair. That was the final straw. What had once been a male name from a sleeper hit third person shooter video game became mainstream, became blockbuster, became household. I'm not a hipster, but I couldn't settle for the thought that I would have to explain to every new face that I didn't take my name from the movie. I just couldn't.
So I decided to make up a new name. I wanted it to sound ancient and medieval, so I decided to construct one by creating prefix names, middle filler syllables and suffix names. I simply took a few letters and threw them together until I got stuff that sounded like it came out of a fantasy book. This is how I ended up with the name Kelitrex, which I used for about three years, or almost the same amount of time I used Juno.
I was on irc one day and I had just stumbled upon an interesting new channel. Half the users there thought I was a girl, and I didn't understand why, so it was pointed out to me that Kelitrex contains Keli, which sounds like Kelly, which is again a female name. I hadn't heard that used as a nickname for Kelitrex before. "Kel" was always used instead, which feels more masculine. And I never intended the "i" to sound like "ee." Kelitrex = Kell-i(t)-treks (Kell rhymes with hell). Alas, I was stuck with a second feminine-sounding name, and it ate at me for a few months until I decided I needed another new name.
It was around this time that I needed to make an account at teamliquid. It took me a while to make an account because I felt that I needed a new name. I was sick of having a random name like Kelitrex that is easy to forget and easy to chastise, so I thought about it a long time and eventually decided on Shell. I was feeling like a shell of a human at the time, and I also really like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so HalfShell became simply Shell because it is more iconic. That was taken, so I added the newbie BW clan tag hp. to get hp.Shell. Well, Shell and I grew apart pretty fast because I had thought up a new name that was far better and had much greater potential.
When I was thinking of a name for TL I just registered with the first one that seemed decent. I didn't feel as attached as I had felt to my other two handles, so I kept brainstorming. It occurred to me that Rad would be a cool word to use. Especially because I was a huge pothead at the time and it just felt superchill to have a name like Rad. So then I said, what could I combine Rad with to make an iconic name like Juno or Kelitrex? I went through some D words but fell short. Then I decided to look up some A-D words. I found admiral and it was a perfect fit. I'm a pretty competitive person so using the word that describes a high military rank felt right to me. But the Rad part of it sort of balances out the ego side with some chill laid-backness. So I had Radmiral, but something looked off. So I added the extra d to make it even more Radd. This balanced the name more and I've used it ever since.
-Raddmiral, The Admiral of Radd.

I was Siyko from when I would play online games in 6th grade and could enter my name into high scores for like shockwave mini golf. I would actually be !_/(((SiYkO)))\_!
For my AIM user name, I was just SiYkO. Online games and stuff that's who I was. In about.. second year of college, I was becoming pretty involved in the fighting game community, and I realized it's pretty stupid, so I cut off the alternating caps for Siyko. This is still my SRK username, as it is my youtube username, and AIM handle.
Then a few years ago, I was registering my XBL account.. and Siyko was taken. I had no idea what to do, so I thought for a while. I wanted something that looked lazy, looked like it didn't have too much effort put into it, was identifiable and distinct, and wouldn't look stupid when typed out. I settled on all-lowercase 'fdsdfg', which you type out if you go back and forth on the keyboard.
I just like the way it looks, I'm happy with it... but half my online identity is still 'siyko' so I kinda have to cope with it...

I came out of a hiatus of reading Batman comics around issue #698 and #699 which came out June-July of last year. The issues were in the middle of the story arch of Dick Grayson taking up the role of Batman and in these particular issues, The Riddler was kidnapped by a villain known as Sebastian Blackspell, which then quickly became my Brood War, Warcraft III, Skype, SC2, and TL username. Originally I wanted the my user ID to be the entire name in some of those forums, but because of character limitations, ultimately became just Blackspell.

When i was a wee lad (around 9 or so) i went to a video arcade every monday for "Monday Madness". For 5 dollars you got in and could play all the arcade machines for free, mini golf for 10c a game, and sign up to play on computers for about half an hour at a time for free. So when i was playing counterstrike (1.5 maybe) i asked my uncle to come up with a cool nickname for me, since a lot of kids there were in high school and i wanted to seem cool. He gave me the name lurch.
For a long time i used lurch, but a lot of the times lurch was taken so i would be something like "pimp-lurch". I got tired of adding random prefixes to my name for no reason so i decided to get a new gamer name. My friend often would reference the sexual harassment panda from southpark and i was told i looked like a panda at school from some girl (Was hefty and always tired). So i combined them to make Lurchpanda
Side note- for some reason people keep calling my luNchpanda... stop it. i understand r and n look alike, but 90% of the people who say my name in games say it wrong.

BoomChild - Noun - The most awesome person in the world.
But seriously, my name came from high school. I played football and it so happens that my last name is Boomer. Built in nickname. I was fairly good my freshman year and being a larger person, was put on the Defensive Line (6' 230lbs at the time). Over the course of the season, we realized that our team had a little trouble gaining that 1-2 yards to make first downs because our backs were both fast, small kids.
Fast forward to the 6th game of the season. My coach throws me into the game on offense as fullback, calls a dive to the right, off guard. We named all our plays not using conventional nomenclature, so this play was named, "BoomChild right."
I gained the yards needed and the coach was yelling "Heck ya BoomChild get em!" from the sidelines, and well that solidified it. My friends still called me Boomer, but to the coaches I was BoomChild and I had a set of plays named after me that year in school.
I got home, deleted my SC:BW account named DevestaterSwarm and created BoomChild. I have been that ever since. I am now 27 and have had the same online identity for over 12 years of SC, CS, DoD, TFC, TF2, XBL, etc etc etc...

I was really into Evangelion back when I was in middle school, the whole thing about the Sephirot(h) of the Tree of Life in Kabbalah.
And Keter (or Kether) was supposed to be the highest in the tree, the crown. And being the sick nerd baller I thought I was, I thought it was the most befitting of me. The "S" at the end stands for "Shuu", which is the pronunciation of the kanji of my last name in Japanese.

Eh dont know had a dream of me being very tough and small and after that started calling myself toughy

Repomies is one of the lead characters in a Finnish animated TV-series. Me and my friend had a serious addiction towards the show to the point where all we said was catch phrases from the show. Then MW1 came out and we needed nicknames so we both got a ID from the show, my was Repomies and his was Salaviina. The names stuck ever since
