edit: turns out its not a double post, yay. I first started playing this game on the fourth of July, this year. I was terrible, I was absolutely god awful. I have been playing PC game my entire life, and that was the day I realized just how shit my mouse control was. When I first started playing I started with the 3 stars, I didn't even know about the actual rating system back then. There was no way I'd start with the 1 and 2 star maps, those were so slow and I had at least some natural speed. I go back now and watch these replays and cringe. I obviously had no skill in any Osu! specific things like knowing patterns and other such things, but my ability in general was so slow. After a few days of playing maybe 14-ish songs (I can't name them by if I hear them I know) I began to expand. I would play all day every day during the summer. Through shear practice I worked up to 4 stars and was able to pass those with relative ease at about 800-ish plays. It felt so great to know I was improving. I was getting faster, and it felt good. I became obsessed with improvement. Then I started 5 star songs, really they were 4.7 most of the time, and I was so happy just to make it to the end. I had no idea about fcing songs, my only goal was to pass 5 stars. Then I came across a very special song. http://osu.ppy.sh/b/63499&m=0 The first time I played it the circles vanished so quickly it was almost incomprehensible, but I loved the song so much that I had to try it. I never got passed the intro for the first 160 retries in a row, it was infuriating. I had gotten so much better than I was before, but I still couldn't beat this song! Well soon after the 160th try I gave up and continued to play other maps that I could finish. This map kept haunting me though, and every once in awhile I would come back to it as an ultimate comparison of my skill. I thought that once I could pass this song, I would actually be good at this game. So the next time I played it, maybe a few weeks after the first experiences (my oldest record on this song in general is July 12th) I tried again. Ok, I could stumble through first weird pattern, the sliders looked so fast but were manageable, the distended streams killed me every time. So I kept working. I played harder and harder songs, now I could perfect the lower 5 stars after I've warmed up enough. Alright, another time to test my strength, how good am I? As the map starts it feels like everything has become just a little bit slower. I'm still clicking furiously with no real sense of rhythm, but this god might just bleed for me. At this point in time I think my max combo was about 60 on this song, the patterns were still hell and I would usually die right before the verses started. Around 250 plays at this point. I thought I was pretty good when I could S a 5 star, but then I pushed myself even harder. Every time I thought I broke into the 'good at Osu!' category I would look around me and see how bad I was. My jumps were terrible, I still hadn't any idea how to stream. I was still mouse only! Around 290 plays. Over the last 2 months I have played this map maybe ten times. The first 9 I got pretty far, but I couldn't read that pattern after that 2nd spinner, and it took so long to get there I couldn't just retry and practice it. Up until the 301st play I never saw what was waiting for me after that pattern, but I kept playing harder and harder songs. Most of what I play is significantly harder than this song by now, but I still couldn't beat it. Lets come back to about 30 minutes ago. No warm-up, going into Osu! to play a few songs and take my mind off life. There was no special preparation, I just decided it was another one of those times. A time to put myself on the examination board and see how I matched up to July-Me. This map is very special to me, every time I play it I remember the struggle. Each pattern, each slider has a history for me. I tried so hard, spent so much time to be able to say that I was actually good at this game. I go through the song, singing with it like an old friend. You could point to any time in the song before that annoying pattern after the 2nd spinner and I could remember ten different tries that had me fail there. This was a fairly bumpy run through because I was out of practice. After the trip down the nostalgia highway I hit the roadblock. That pattern is so hard to see with the normal skin of Osu! for me. I wanted to dominate, but in my head I kept doubting myself, by now I was used to instantly failing there. This time was different though. I completely botched the pattern and missed most of it, but the music didn't slow down, the familiar suggestion to retry didn't blacken the screen with my failure. The tempo kept up and I kept clicking. It was so easy, why was it so easy? I completely lost focus in the confusion. I'm not playing particularly well right now; I'm not warmed up at all, but I'm here and I'm beating this song. This song that would make me a good Osu! player and I could look back at when I couldn't even beat the intro over 4,200 plays ago and laugh. The final piece of the pie-chart started to fill up, the map was easy after that pattern, a nice predictable romp in ecstasy after I realized that this was it. So I finished the song, the score screen came up. It was ok, not too good, but ok. I didn't care though. I had finally beaten this song! It has gotten to the point where it is no longer a fair representative of my skill, but I passed the song! I've had this goal for about a 3.5 months now and everything I've gotten from this game has been through practice. You can't buy a +% pack from a store, or an extra multiplier. It was just me, my mouse/keyboard, and the map. The hours of playing until my hand locked up gave me this precious moment. i pretty much started writing this right after I beat the song, so its as rough as a draft is going to be, but that's fine with me. That's probably why This is my favorite map, circles are nice and big so I can loosen up before trying anything crazy. Usually fail one the weird streams though. I don't mean breaks... i meant there aren't any pauses between notes | ||
