So, has anyone else every tried playing with hitsounds muted?
I've been surprised to find that, since I started doing this, my accuracy has actually gone up drastically. It's much easier to follow the song's actual rhythm when your own mistakes aren't creating a second rhythm that competes for attention.

Yeah I've done this ever since I started.. I don't understand how people can play with those annoying sounds on.
i found out good players use keyboard keys Z and X to play instead of clicking. mindfucked...its supposed to be easier at the fast streams than clicking furiously with your index finger i guess.

You could always alternate between index and middle finger so make use of both right and left clicks :>
wow. i never played any beatgame or blabla hero ever before. but this is huge huge fun and strangely addicting.
managed to go from losing on 2 stars to beating some 4stars decently in 2 hours. but those insane 5 star ones are just... insane :> i die within the first 5 seconds ~~
/edit seems like i can do 4stars somewhat decent.
but i have HUGE problems with overlapping stuff (like a hit on a small slider on a big slider)and just not seeing stuff cause its behind the point popup thingy.
/edit 2 yeah stupid game really got me hooked. but atleast my first "perfect" one already. 4stars only but now imhappy :D + Show Spoiler +
I played this game for two days and my mouse accuracy has increased an unbelievable amount... My score in this game increased by almost 3 fold I'm so impressed o.o

haha and you had fun while you were at it :>
I really like the update they did new layout looks pretty cool (not too much changed but the blue background looks really good )
I remember checking this out ages ago. Instantly hated it. But for whatever reason I decided to install it a few days ago, and I'm finding it rather addictive. Also, I apparently I still like j-rock. :D
would appreciate some too. i esp have huge problems with overlapping sliders esp when one or more sliders are very short return thingies. its (imo) impossible to see what i should do and some situations i still dont know what to do even after trying that part like 20 times.
also most of the 5star ones seem to be pretty much a big grind to remember evrything exactly where/when/what pops up. am i right on this or are there really people that somehow hit stuff perfectly when they have like 0,3secs to see what they hve to do?

Practice... it sounds like you're having difficulty "reading" maps. As you play more you'll be able to recognize where notes are extremely quickly. Unless the map is really unusual, you shouldn't have to memorize it to pass.
One problem with Osu's difficulty ranking system is that everything above a certain difficulty becomes 5 star. That means that 5 star maps vary from slightly harder than 4.5 star maps to extremely difficult. Basically, 5 star is a whole new game, and to pass 5 star maps you need to learn how to hit with multiple buttons, get used to relatively fast approach rates, and be capable of much faster jumps than you ever did before. If it's sightreading you're having difficulty with though, I don't know of any solution except practice.
I'm awful at reading maps with high approach rate too... I don't understand how people like AR 10.
Oh right, tips... 1. TURN OFF MOUSE ACCELERATION. I cannot emphasize this enough. I played for months with mouse acceleration on. Turn it off. 2. Use zx. At least I find it easier than mouse clicking, although there are some very good players who use only mouse. 3. Don't play maps you can S, at least in the beginning. Sing maps is for increasing rank, not improving. 4. Practice a lot (if you have time for that x_x, fml, etc)

Triangles tips are good, other things you can do if you can't figure out a part of a song is to use the halftime mod to give yourself more time to see it, the auto-play mod so you can just focus on looking at the pattern without playing it and you can also open up the song in the editor and look at it there. You also just play a specific part of a song in the editor too if you need to.
Like triangle said, 5 star songs are not made equal, the ones marked hard instead of lunatic are *usually* easier, or you can find songs with multiple 5star difficulties and play the easiest 5star difficulty on it.
Most importantly practice lots, the first few 5stars I played took a good amount of retries to pass.

How do you set things to use ZX for "clicks" anyway? I'm thinking I'll stick with playing mouse only but I might try ZX. I did play stepmania and a couple other music games so I'm used to hitting keys to the beat of music...

ZX are set as left and right clicks respectively by default, and they will make you much, much better.
Also, for those with graphic tablets, try using pen tap - it makes a lot more sense if you're just starting out (and, don't use mouse mode, use pen mode if you're going to try this).
