It's most common to tap with your keyboard and aim with mouse (or tablet). It's pretty natural that your accuracy is really bad at the start. Practice should solve that quite easily though. Try to get used to all different kinds of rythmical patterns (2, 3 or 4 fast notes, fast and slow triplets and slider-single note combinations for example), and using keyboard will feel natural very soon.
Thanks. Also do you use 1 button for slower stuff and 2 for just the faster stacks? or always 2 alternating? Also any suggested betamaps to help improve?
Comes down to preference in the end, give alternating a good try though since it is easier to learn sooner than later and some maps are hard without it once you get better. For beatmaps it depends what kind of music you like, most easy/normal/hard difficulties are straightforwardly made, it only tends to get creative at the insane difficulties so you can just choose songs you like.
Thanks, I really like metal but there seem to be almost no metal beatmaps that are good, most of the beatmaps for songs I like are terrible and off beat. I guess to give an idea of where I am, the hardest song I've been able to beat all the way through so far has been "the legend of the black shawarma" by infected mushroom on 3.5 star, which is apparently very easy lol.

That's, as was said, a matter of taste, but in the long run it's an absolute necessity to be able to alternate (for 'streaming'; a line of really fast notes). These days there is nearly no chance to find decent maps where alternating locally is not preferable. I believe it's common practice to single tap on beat notes (every half beat technically). Every quarter of a beat is alternated. This of course depends on the bpm. At 128 bpm stuff for example it's perfectly possible to single tap quarter of a beat notes.
I can suggest a few maps, which are sure to be useful, but aren't in line with your taste, unfortunately. Download every map of val0108. Although the hardest difficulties are most likely way way too hard, they are excellent long term goals. https://osu.ppy.sh/s/31419 The collab difficulty. It's probably way too hard as well, but you can learn to alternate using this map. You may want to change the ar to ar9, because ar8 seems to be rarely played anymore. (If you don't know how to: edit the map, open 'song setup', open the tab 'difficulty', edit the approach rate bar) Yeah, i know, it's nyan cat :') please bear with it ..
It's pretty hard to find useful practice maps at 3,5 star, because at that level you really need to keep working on your basics (basic rythm, basic aim, reading). To get more map you like to play, you might want to search with names of mappers you like as keywords. That seems to be a very effective way to get new maps you like to play (i don't know if you'll like the songs though...)
There is no point jumping straight to ar9 just because ar8 isn't played as much. Just playing what the mapper set is better since it's more important to get a feeling for note density.
Also searching mappers is useful when you get to insanes because it becomes much more stylistic, but do mappers really do anything unique beneath that? Most difficulties at 3.5 stars and below are just there to pad out a spread for ranking. So I'd just try random ranked stuff initially, if you like something searching the artist for more. I don't think you'll find much metal though but Demetori is a good shout.
https://osu.ppy.sh/b/155929&m=0 I'd use the Another difficulty on this as a starting goal since it is pretty balanced between different skills.

Yeah, osu is severely lacking in 'western' metal. Puxtu does a lot of rock/alternative stuff, but if you like softer metal there's also Nightwish, Within Temptation (barely counts), Dragonforce, and a few scattered Epica songs. Foreground Eclipse and Undead Corporation are good eastern metal, but also pretty rare. Apocalyptica is borderline, and all the 'real' western metal comes from Mazzerin, so its ridiculously difficult. Oh, and Bring Me The Horizon, although they're pretty terrible.
I wish I had enough rhythm to properly acc This Calling zzz feels like I'm close though
osu is severely lacking in western everything, i got a dozen maps from tillerino earlier and almost all of them were high pitched anime-y songs in another language

well pishifat (not puxtu, zzzz tired soularion was tired) is trying to fix the lack of western stuff in general, but harder metal is really only limited to Mazzerin who really only makes stupidly hard maps.
Cookiezi just got 1500 combo on FD4D HR with like 99.85% accuracy *squee*
definate FC potential but suuuuuuuper painful to watch damn
he has quite a lot of runs at 1k - 2.2k combo (a few hundred short of fc) but the very high combo runs got streaks of misses or low accuracy. He just had 1700 combo 99.5% again but failed on hardest part
breathes heavily
HE DID IT, 99.13% acc (not his best!) 713pp and i saw it live. Damn
Cry Thunder + Image Material + Time Freeze (quite a few people got fairly close on those last two) + Blue Zenith HR + FD4D HR all first
I love watching the best plays, especially w/ dual handcams ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of my own plays~ + Show Spoiler +
got this 99.1% acc, it's 261bpm mostly half beat and od9.6 which are both out of my comfort zone~ (though evidently not nearly as much as before if i can very very nearly 1x100 it.. i had the timing right in my head at the end but hand failed to keep up with the spam in that section) ~ My aim is feeling a bit better now!
