I didn't get A's or something, but i could see what was happening, recognise my mistakes, etc. At the time i only played osu because i wanted to get better at starcraft (silly me), so that may have had a slowing effect.Just a general question here: How many levels did it take you guys to be able to finish an "insane" level songs? After that it went pretty fast. Edit: although I have no clue what your level is, and what mindset you have, there are some tips which make the game a lot more 'clear' and will accelerate your progress: disable video's, dim backgrounds 100% and disable map skin hitsounds (note: not hitsounds in general, only the sounds the maps brings with them) are just a few, but should make quite a difference. All these things can be found in the options. Sorry if you already knew those. Edit2: you asked about how many levels, but the level system in osu sucks. It doesnt say anything. If you really want an indication, try the 'Delis' insane' sifficulty of the following map (https://osu.ppy.sh/s/127712) and try it with the mod nofail. If you get around 85% accuracy, it means you're very close to doing normal insanes, around 70-80 means you probably should practice some more of these maps to get more comfortable on them. If you don't know what's going on, you should start practicing hards, and occasionally play some insane to see how you fare. I honestly believe that there is very little need to play anything below hards (unless of course you have fun playing those maps, i'm purely talking from a competitive point of view)

I don't quite remember my level, but all comes down to how much you play. I think it took me around 6 months as well, but this was with super sporadic play, and the jump in skill I saw playing consistently for the last two months was far and away greater than my first six and anything after. I think the average player should be able to start passing insane songs within two months if they play 5 or more hours per week.

Everyone learns at a different rate. If you really want to get better, the biggest thing you can do for yourself is step out of your comfort zone and play stuff that feels 'too hard', whatever your definition of 'too hard' is. The more often you do this, the better. Doing this can make everything that feels hard now suddenly feel so much easier. Most people have this urge to shut down or freak out when something feels too hard, and this kind of training helps you get past that kind of reaction. I also highly recommend you make the changes Yorbon mentions. Disabling movies and dimming the background means your brain has to do a lot less work when you play, making things a lot easier, even if it doesn't feel like it at first. Disabling the map's hitsounds means your brain doesnt have to do extra work to figure out what the sounds it's hearing are, and can reduce distractions from particularly annoying, loud, or our of place hitsounds (or hitsounds that have a lot of delay).

And to give a general idea of where I'm at, here's a couple maps I've been working on that I can't quite beat, but I still feel are within my range. https://osu.ppy.sh/b/249233 https://osu.ppy.sh/b/110347

Been pretty much exclusively trying to FC songs in the 4-4.5 star range the last couple weeks, so it's about time I stepped out of my comfort zone. Anyone have some good ~5 - 5.3 star maps they'd like to share? I'll just list some of val0108's maps, because I think they're (still) the best maps around. They're not boring and make sense to me. https://osu.ppy.sh/b/140937 (this is a must have, val's is 5.3) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/43728 (4.63, but i feel it an underestimation, as i think that with all val0108 maps) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/39275 (4.98) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/37705 (5.18) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/28425 (5.14) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/25825 (4.99) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/22509 (5.06, it's ar8) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/33471 (5.04) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/60096 (5.43) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/25248 (4.08, it's 260 bpm though, good for single tap practice. In addition it's cs5) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/33556 (5.31) Hope you'll find them useful. Some of them certainly were quite some time ago. I remember saying in this thread that playing them made the other insanes look easy. (star values didnt exist then) edit:seeing your edit, ill add some ones. Just a minute https://osu.ppy.sh/s/32021 (5.47) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/28864 (5.46) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/28561 (4.67, but, again high bpm) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/35942 (5.78) https://osu.ppy.sh/b/277983&m=0 (5.54, this one may be a stretch, quite fast) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/29691 (5.04, you probably already have this) https://osu.ppy.sh/s/33068 (5.63)

I spectated falcon for a while, and it seems I overestimated his level quite a bit, so pretty much all of them were stretching his abilities. That's fine of course, it speeds improvement. But yeah, they're quite hard atm. Spectating him did make me realise how much levels have risen since i've started playing. I can't remember playing val maps until i was like 16k rank or so. And this made me try to remember some of the maps i had first. konadora mentioned k-on songs on the first page, i thought they must've been the best maps ever, because they were recommended by someone with a star (lol) and after discovering you could find more songs by searching htt instead of k-on, i discovered the following map: http://bloodcat.com/osu/m/22954 (it's not downloadable via osu site anymore) You should just take a look at the harder ones, i doubt they're actually playable, especially the hardest two. Imagine the shock I went through when i first saw them. (remember star values didnt exist, they all had 5 stars) The first map i had was this one: https://osu.ppy.sh/s/39825 The first japanese song map i had was this one: https://osu.ppy.sh/s/38566 I instantly feel in love with it, as it was by far the best map I had encountered. (The hard diff, that is, cause i was bad) sorry this turned into an old man's story post.

By the way, not sure how good you thought falcon is, but I can't pass these 2 either (again, maybe I just suck, but I feel they are quite a bit harder than the other maps you posted).

Eventually some skrillex maps without relax i think. I started on [Hard] diffs IIRC This map! I thought the sliders like the one at ~1:18-1:21 were cool fitting with music and the triplets were generally nice. I couldn't time doubles or streams (AT ALL, i got a ton of 100's, 50's and misses and it's like od5)

It probably means that the map isnt boring to play. Lol, that's like me and spinboxer's maps. I don't think there's a single spinboxer map I've ever enjoyed. Charles is a pretty decent guy though, apart from his opinions on osu maps.

I wasn't of course attacking him personally, we just have totally different view on osu and maps (also based on some of his forum posts). But I have to say I have an unusual taste as well. Among the mappers I like to play maps from are djpop, saymun, soulfear and mtmcl, for example.

I only really know him from talking about mania because he plays a bit, but I've seem some of his posts so I know what you mean. I've never liked djpop's stuff much (in mania or std for that matter, since he used to make o2jam charts and has made a few mania maps), but i seem to recall enjoying something by saymun. I probably have odd tastes in std maps too, since I like caren_sk and shinxyn stuff.

Could it be this one? At least, that's my favourite of his. Totally forgot about shinxyn, he has some great maps as well! I believe caren is pretty well liked overall, but more so because of the difficulty than anything else, really. His maps are great practice, but the 'slider into double' he uses quite abit is not really my cup of tea. At least not the way he uses it generally. I really liked his 'bad companyz' though, that map's really great.
