teamliquid.net's Altitude League Dates: April 26 to May 24, 2009 Entry Fee: May cost your social life
Alright, the ball is officially rolling. Below, there is information on starting a team, signing up for the league and playing in the super-exclusive, super-extravagant show match. You should use this thread and the IRC channel (#tl.altitude on quakenet) to find a team. It should be noted that the rules may change as we become more experienced with how the game plays during organized matches.
Here are the rules. They are extremely simple. If/when you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the thread. I will answer you and update the rules with the appropriate clarification. + Show Spoiler [Rules] +
The league's first season will run for a full 4 weeks: April 26 to May 24.
A team will have 2 matches scheduled per week. The default playdate is Sunday. It is up to the captains to agree to a separate date if it is required. If a date cannot be agreed on, then the match must be played on Sunday. Time depends on preferred time-zones of teams.
Schedules will be sent out via PM and posted in this OP. The top teams will be placed in a playoff bracket, the size of which depends on how many teams participate in the regular season.
A regular season match will be a best of 3 map series. The first map will be designated by the league administrators and the losing team will be able to choose the map from a limited map pool thereafter. Screenshots of the post-game screen must be captured after every game and should be submitted to ME (chobopeon) via TL.NET PM immediately following the game along with a scoring summary in text. A game which lacks screen shots from either side will result in a loss and 1 game suspension for both teams.
Before the season begins, I will further clarify to captains exactly how to report the results of a match.
A playoff match will be a best of 3 maps. Each map will be a best of 5 series and will be played exactly like a regular season match. The first map will be designated by the league administrators and the losing team will be able to choose the map from a limited map pool thereafter.
The championship will be a best of 3 maps with a best of 7 series. All regular season rules apply.
A team must have at least 5 total pilots including a designated captain. There is no maximum limit on the number of pilots a team can have.
A captain is the de facto leader of a team. Only a captain can add or remove players from the roster. A captain must be easy to reach for the league and other captains. We will be using the TL PM system and so a captain must check his TL PMs regularly.
Here is the team sign up. It is also extremely simple. I've got a brief how-to, a blank form and an example form. Again, feel free to ask questions if you've got them. I will answer them and clarify the instructions. + Show Spoiler [Team Sign Up] +
Only the captain can send this in. Only a team with at least 5 players should be sending in an application. We won't accept a 3 player team "looking for more" - find more and then sign up!
Sign ups will continue until April 25.
Team Name: Tag: Captain (TL/Altitude names): Pilots, IPs, Account ID: Preferred Time Zone: Show match info:
We need your team name and tag simply for identification. We'd appreciate it if you could wear a tag during all league games. It'd make sorting through everything much simpler.
We need both the team captain's TL and Altitude names for ease of contact and for when if/when we need to review names.
We need all pilots (captain included) handles, IPs and accounts. You can find your ip at http://www.whatismyip.com/ . We need this to verify player identity in the player screen shots and server logs.
We need your preferred Time Zone so we can assign matches which are easier for all teams to complete. I will provide a unique "default play time" (on Sunday) for each game based on the the team's preferred time zone. There is no requirement to only play with people near you, but each time should be able to play at roughly the same time - for practice's sake and for official games.
The last line ("show match info") is totally optional. If you'd like to play in the show match within the next week or so, let me know. This is your chance to pitch that your team will give a good game to the audience. Tell us how long your pilots have been playing and when you'd be available.
Example: Team Name: The Pony Factory Tag: [PEWPEWPONY]name Captain (TL/Altitude names): choboPEon / chobopeon Pilots, IPs, Account ID: chobopeon 43.23.554.123 doobiedoo@gmail.com reddude 65.43.234.456 doobiedoo@gmail.com greenlady 48.43.123.346 doobiedoo@gmail.com blackpower 41.43.789.543 doobiedoo@gmail.com whitemale 43.28.444.120 doobiedoo@gmail.com Preferred Time Zone: EST Eastern United States Show match info: My team is full of veterans that have been playing since before you were born. chobopeon is the OP, and all the rest have been playing since the 80's. We can play anytime on the weekends and most weekday nights, EST, of course.

Altitude Custom Map Pack is tec27's bunch of custom maps currently in heavy rotation on most servers.
ORIGINAL INTRODUCTION TO ALTITUDE Right before I head onto ICCup, I usually get in a few rounds with Altitude to warm up my fingers. It's free and it's awesome.
Welcome to Altitude, the best multiplayer 2-D aerial combat game on the internet. Altitude is a fierce contest of ace vs ace, battling for supremacy of the skies in a fast paced combat that is way more fun than a flight simulator. It is a game of steely nerves, hair-trigger reflexes and brilliant tactical thinking. Altitude will stretch you to the limit from the upper reaches of the stratosphere, the relics of a long forgotten lost city, to within the deepest hollows of underground caverns. It offers five unique planes to choose from and an online community that will provide you with hours of entertainment. So stretch those fingers, get your game face on, and prepare for Altitude.

I've been playing the game since last fall and I like it a lot. Ever play Biplanes? I believe this is the successor.
The Something Awful forums have been introduced to the game recently and as a result, an influx of shitty 15 year old boys with nothing better to do than call everyone a faggot has been seen. However, most of the users are still very cool people.
So, TL, come play and restore the balance in this game's community to well mannered, highly skilled players :D DOWNLOAD IT HERE.
hmmm...is it something wrong on my end or is there only like 20 people on at a time? Either way, still having an awesome time with it. Also despite it being the starting plane I'm really having a lot of fun playing with the Loopy.

well it is beta and the devs havent gone into much of a publicity phase yet - thatll come in a little while when beta is coming to a close.
but usually at night there are 40-60 people playing
ah cool, I don't mind the low numbers, there are usually enough people in a single room. I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing out on some other rooms because I'm behind a firewall/router or whatever.
and I just saw Light[Sleep] in game a few minutes ago, but he left before I could say "hi"
Saw some of you guys on. I'm basically just gonna play with my close friends. maybe get into a big battle. Some of you guys played like you had no life hahaha. This game is pretty awesome though. Everyone check it out for sure!
Does anyone else think the last level plane is waaaay more powerful than the others? I can hardly survive as the first two types of planes, but the top one always seems to be able to survive for a while AND get lots of kills.

Yeah, the Miranda can be pretty imba. Supposedly it's slightly easier to beat them with a Bomber or that other ship that drops mines (I forget it's name), but you can still beat it with a Loopy (my preferred ship). All you gotta do is keep EMPing the Miranda as much as possible while shooting missiles from above or below it, if you stay in front it'll shoot you either with that energy ball or the laser which does a shit ton of damage.
While it is possible (and depending on the Miranda pilot's skill it could also be easy) to kill a Miranda, I still consider it imba as shit since Mirandas have a much easier time at killing.

that fucking plane is the bane of my existence
haha, I think I got the hang of killing them now with the loopy (unless all the Mirandas I've fought were noobs). Last server I went into, anytime I went 1v1 against a miranda I came out on top about 8 out of 10 times. The trick is to EMP as much as possible to keep them from warping, and just hold F (fire missiles) while staying on top or below their hull. It takes some practice to get the right coordination, but I'm pretty sure this strategy will at least level the playing field somewhat. A player that actually has more skill than you should be able to get around this, but a Miranda pilot at or just slightly above your skill level should fall for this.
Edit: and I've won 3 FFA's now granted, that isn't much of an accomplishment, but considering I sucked total ass at the beginning of the day I'm pretty proud.
I dont get it it, is this some sort of RPG style game? I dont understand why theres the "+10 XP" floating on the screenshot you provided. Can i get a little bit more detail about how the game works?

The experience kind of works like in COD4. Getting experience gives you levels, and higher levels gives you access to cool new weapons and ships. Although don't feel discouraged about seeing everyone with higher levels than you. You can still easily beat people with the starter plane. In fact except for upgrading the hull (which you'll be able to do at a very low level) I'm still playing with the starter plane and kicking ass
Edit: oh, and because it took me a while to get this, if you're in a team game you can land on top of your mothership thing to restore your health completely. It takes a little practice to land on it without crashing though, but it makes team games way easier.

It is not an rpg - it is a deathmatch. The XP system comes into play with unlocking new planes and types of weapons. I sort of wish it wasn't there but it is nothing that detracts from the game in any significant way.
edit: already been answered. ninja'd in my own thread!
Seen chobopeon, nuada and falcynn on so far that I recognise Really fun little game, I actually enjoy the challenge/skill. Thanks for this thread~ Only thing I dislike alot is the xp system. However the starting plane is actually good, emp+homing missiles pew pew pew
Play with you later but this is the time to play koreans on iccup..

Haha i've been playing for a couple hours now. GOD this game is fun. Level 18 already, name is DaDeAd if anyone wants to play or something. I'll be on for the next few hours.

Yeah, just go to account info, and change your nickname.
Also I think I'm finally over my Miranda hate now that I'm no longer getting pummeled by them. But now I'm annoyed as shit at those Explodets that just spam mines in spawn points on FFA's.

lol, I thought you started doing that just to annoy me since you didn't seem to use the Explodet until after I posted
God that game was addicting. I know that i was in a game with a few TL members. It was a lot of fun! The loopy is the best plane so far imo- just so fast, if you can handle it well.
Explodets are everywhere. Those guys were causing me some trouble, not in fighting, but they just kill so many darn people so I can't get any action. The trick is to stay on their tail before they lay too many mines. just keep firing missiles and bouncing over the mines. Or do a quick maneuver around an obstacle and just quickly dispose of them. You dont want to take them head on unless you can accellerate above them, because their giant rockets are too dangerous.
In FFA as a loopy, try to stay at a distance from the battle and try to be at the back of the "train"of dogfighters. You should come out with a kill or two. Loopies thrive on surviving off of other peoples health tanks.
The double fire is really good, you just cant rely too much on the homing. It kinda still works though.
Theirs a little homing trick with the missiles, it homes on people you face. Even if you shot and aren't targeting anyone. So you can shoot slightly away from someone like 5 times and just turn to them and they die instantly.
Stay in the clouds and be sneaky because you can get alot of kills without dying, just use the missles and you should take out some people.
When using the energy fence, you don't have to neccesarily use it in a cave or small area, you could wait and predict the anxious enemies move and place it while they turn and accelerate and they will smash right in it and die instantly. Or use it for defense while you grab a crucial health box.
Big dogfights are good for fences because people like to continuously loop around.
I generally avoid mirandas I just fight them super aggressive so that it doesnt matter if they 180 into me.
Bombers. Are ridiculously easy to use. Once you have smart bombs, theres no stopping you, unless there is another bomber.
The smart bombs lock on and you fire all you want, they explode and often get another person bumped from it. Definitely very strong in the hands of anyone. Just slow down and engage like that. And then if people flank you use the back gun. Or fly upward and drop bombs. Its not impossible to dodge weapons either, and it can take alot of hits too.
the miranda secondary ability (180 turn) doesn't do any damage. it's actually the afterburner warp that does.
and laser mirandas are mostly good at large games. in smaller games they aren't as imbalanced. the biplane is actually pretty powerful if you have good aim (with heavy cannon). the smart bomber is good offensively but pretty helpless if someone decides that they really want to kill you.
Smart bomber is the protoss of planes. Because its ridiculously easy to get kills. I am not extraordinary at flying, I generally die right after I shoot someone down(because I usually stall out instead of flying in circles.)
Just lock and shoot, thats all you need. It great in both games. TBD, you can still fend small groups off and fly in and drop the big bomb. And you can also shoot down turrets relatively easily.
How many people are still playing? I can't be fucked with the huge public ffa games filled with mines and smart bombs... Can we get an in-house game going? That would rock

I've been playing the game for awhile. There are a bunch of other old-school Altitude players, many of whom are equally good [and a few who are better.] They haven't been playing as much lately, though.
I'd recommend that you guys play on the official servers as much as possible as they have limits on the number of players allowed to play in any given game...the game is *much* more fun played 5v5 than 13v13, for example.
Yeah Pillars, you're amazing And much agreed on the lower player numbers. When the goon servers get to like 24 players, they start to just be random clusterfucks where nothing much happens.
For people wanting a TL game, why don't we just hijack one of the empty servers when we have enough people on to form our own game? Perhaps we should make an irc channel for this, so we know how many people are on at one time?
Getting an all TL game sounds fun. Also, even if there are just a few of you online but you want a smaller game you could start up one of the official servers and wait for more random people to join. Invariably people will start joining new games a few minutes after they've been created.
I think TL is now the majority of players on the servers, it's really fun to duke it out with TL members. It could be nice to have our own server, it gets crowded on the official ones.
I don't think we really need our own server, people just need to learn how to start new games in other servers properly If you wanna get a game going in a pretty empty server, go into the full game and tell them you're starting a game there and that people who want a smaller game should move over. You should get a fair amount of joiners after that.
To make it easier to get some good TL games going though, we could use IRC. I'm currently sitting in #TL.altitude on Quakenet (link: irc://irc.quakenet.org/TL.altitude )
Yea, apparently there is a new update nerfing all the stuff ppl have been whining about. But my program refuses to update I get a message box saying "checking for updates" but nothing happens.. Anyone have the same problem?
EDIT: The moment I posted this it started downloading -.- Just to make this post slightly useful:
================================================== =============== April 8th, 2009
Bomber "Smart Bombs" replaced with "Bombs" - replaces tailgun with dumb bombs
Miranda Laser - no longer pierces planes Reverse - fixed bug that could cause Miranda to lose energy or stall when reversing at low throttle Weapon charge-up rate is halved when Miranda has 0 energy
In time-limited TBD, if both bases are still standing when the timer runs out, the team whose base has the most health wins
EDIT2: I played the game for a while and I think the bomber is still overpowered... They removed the tracking feature but now the bomber has both the grenades AND "dumb" bombs at the same time. Lets see how this works out...
Bomber is totally overpowered. You have both grenades and bombs (I mainly used bombs that way so it doesn't really affect me). And I'm really starting to love the biplane. <3
I'm really enjoying the biplane. Miranda seems way too overpowered in the hands of an expert player, but I don't like playing it. If you know the angle to approach a bomber at with the biplane you should be fine.

Agreed, Biplane rocks. I just need damn Flexible Wings now
I've finally got a trick down. It's the upside down propulsion with the dogfighter plane. If done correctly you can sail through the air attacking under you but moving at full speed. I've gotten a fair few bombs in using this method. The best part is that you are stalled and facing downward the whole time. So at any point you can pull out of the attack.

Agreed. I don't like miranda at all. Explodet is kinda cool, and it's not so easy to get kills.

Well, it's an independent game that's still in beta. Almost all of the marketing will come from word of mouth, and the game hasn't actually been released yet.
Once you get to a certain skill threshold and are playing against equally skilled opponents in 5v5s and such the game becomes very rewarding to play.

Well, it seems that more than half of the people on there are actually coming from here... so even if the not any big gaming related website has posted anything about this game, I still find it awkward that there are no other forums that it has been posted on. Unless it has only been released very recently.
I think the game has a lot of potential.. I wish the maps would be bigger though, so there are a bit more individual skill fights or whatever

I got a 360 controller working for it using JoyToKey, but it wasn't really that enjoyable to use (or at least I didn't take the time to find a good way to configure it) so I went back to the keyboard.

Thanks. Yeah I just realized I could remap. Right now I'm trying shoulder buttons for throttle, and joystick for direction. Seems comfortable so far.
Yeah, I use Joy2Key with my USB Saturn controller when I play. I have R and L mapped to throttle and it works great once you get used to it. The Saturn d-pad is a little too sensitive for me to use up and down for throttle.
fun game, but seems like the plane that can warp and go backwards rocks the rest easily tho >_<; maybe just because im newb tho -_- but still... also teamgames are not that fun imo... ffa is alot more fun
It depends on how many people there are. Small team games are alot more fun than the enormous clusterfucks where it's just pure luck if you manage to get a bomb through within half an hour. Then again, I prefer small for FFA too; just randomly shooting and hitting stuff isn't fun imo.
I also agree about larger, more detailed maps. The one that Maimer made is great; another large detailed one with a little more open space would be nice.

Maimer actually made quite a few of the maps that are played, I think. (The Core, the forest one, and the one you're talking about). But yeah, if there were a few more of those with more air space, we'd be set. I'd also really like to see a CTF mode in the game, that could be pretty awesome.

i think the base destruction is kinda CTF alike... like bring the bomb to other base and intercept the other bomb.. >.<
they should think of something to get the randomness out more skillbased, as others said too many ppl on the maps makes it just a button mash fest... other than that as game modes... hmm ahrd to say... maybe some kinda all vs 1 game where the 1 is quite strong and has to stay alive as long as possible or whatever... i have no idea what kind of gamemodes games like these usually have... or maybe an elimination game where once you die you have to wait until everyone is dead like in CS and play like 7 rounds team with most wins wins... or stuff like that ... that would be nice maybe >.<;

That's in 10vs10 In 5v5 it's very skill-based because you can't be everywhere and you have to attack while protecting your base so it's much more challenging and interresting.
Lol spent the whole night playing this game. Almost got lvl 34. Interesting fact : i did more kills with the grenade plane WITH backward fire cauz bomb suck in strategic play imo. How many kills i got when they were all chasing me, god it was so fun. Didn't like the miranda's one at all. Too weak, seriously the warp is just for pussies who want to look cool ~ (or maybe i missed something cauz i'm not lvl 60 yet )

Well, in the hands of a very very good player, Miranda is ridiculously overpowered. You can do absolutely what you want and dodge most of ennemy's shots. With the blue perk level 60, I understand that you have a bit more life and energy so it makes things even worse. I feel it's almost the same for the biplane one you have "flexible wings". You have absolutly great maneuvrability and very high speed, but given that your machinegun has very short range, you have to be extremely close to your ennemy in order to be effective.

That's what i like with the Miranda. Its slow and fragile and generally very hard to use. But as you learn how, it becomes very strong. Its nowhere near "ZOMG Protoss IMBA" some people posted earlier, especially now that the laser hits only one target. Actually its quite the opposite..
And yes the biplane is very very cool.
EDIT:

Nope, if im not mistaken the last blue perk increases the bonus of the exp bars you get by killing multiple guys without dying.

Hmm. The bronze/silver/gold bars near your name ? What's the point ? I mean, I'm level 60 since yesterday and I tried it and didnt see any effect. And since you don't need any more xp at this point .. I don't really know actually.
super hot tip: you don't have to wait until you are extremely close to an enemy's base to drop your bomb. work on the angles and speed of the plane and you can make shots from pretty far away on most maps.
i'm just throwing that out there because i often see my teammates wait too long with the bomb and fly into impossible positions.

Yup them. From the wiki: With ever 10 experience a player receives in a single life results in a bar above the plane. Each bar archived gives the plane a bonus in speed, power, and agility. Ace instincts increases the increase given with each bar by 50%. This perk is most useful with long life and is best noticed once reaching max bars, turning any plane into an unstoppable force.
also, can someone explain to me the seemingly random nature of bomb blocks? i can't figure it out - sometimes i can fly into a dropping bomb and it will explode on me, sparing my base. other times it goes right by me.
most often, the closer i am to the plane dropping, the more likely the bomb is to explode prematurely. if i am further away and catch the bomb in mid flight it seems like a coin toss and i just have to pray.
please explain this to me if you've figured it out
Oh, all right stet_tcl, thank you very much, that could be useful :D
choboPEon, I have absolutely no idea, I can't block when I try to, and I block when I don't want to. Obviously there is a trick because I see some players that manage to block EVERY TIME, it's amazing.

here is the answer i got on another forum i visit:
I don't know 100% of the details, but basically the way the netcode works is that it uses what's displayed on the attacker's screen to check if any attack is a hit. in combat, this works out great most of the time, but in a bomb block... blech. since it's based off what the bomber is seeing, it means that the defenders will always be a little bit off. this is fine if everyone has decent pings, but since the community is small enough right now that ppl are playing each other from around the world, you get a lot of bombs passing through ppl.
the good news is that lam's very aware that it's a problem... he just doesn't know a way to fix it without causing other problems.
i guess the solution is to try to get an angle that gives you the most time in the same path as the bomb: straight ahead. this makes a little sense because i've always had the most success with that path.
If you know a bomb is coming the best i could do to stop it to fly around my base with my speed slowed down a lot, that way your plane changes position very little and you are more likely to protect.
The other way i did it was by parking my plane on top of my base. If the bomb was going to fall 1 mt in front of me i just speed up a little. I only did this like 5 times cause i knew a bomb was coming and i managed to block it every single time.
Also yesterday I launched the bomb with my plane upwards (belly facing up) and i noticed it went very far away, don't know if it had to do with my plane speed / position or the fact that it was upside down..

weird. usually to get the best distance, i start pulling straight up and burst as i let go. i usually die by flying into the roof of the level but i always get it to go extremely far.

Lolol, this game is so much fun.
When i saw your name ingame i realised that [TL] proably was TeamLiquid. Before that i just thought it was some clan that somehow encompassed almost a third of the playerbase.
Also, the biplane is awesome incarnate on two sets of wings. awesome looks and enough firepower to stop itself mid-flight. too bad you can't fire both primary and secondary guns for more than a quarter of a second, but it's almost always enough to kill someone.
How to you restart your engine after stalling? Sometimes it auto restarts, sometimes it doesn't. I've been trying to press "up" but it doesn't always work.
You have to turn downward first, otherwise you won't get it restarted. There's a green arrow that appears that tells you when to keep turning when you stall.
I been having alot of fun with fellow my TLers we compromise about 1/3rd of the total player base, I definetly recommend checking this game out. The commercial launch is weeks away so add TLers to ur flist cause servers will most likely explode then. When that happens i imagine clans in their truest selves will widely form. TL will have already had a month or so of experience over everyone ^_^.
I'm Panda. We should probably get a list of everyone's nicks, as I personally don't want to lose levels to put a [TL] tag on.
And all I can play is loopy, though I really want to try the Miranda when I get it. I just can't wrench myself away from my homing missiles and EMP though.

If you visit the altitude forums, you'll see most of the highly skilled and really experienced players think that miranda is easiest to be good with.
To several people above me who didn't realise this; you can change you nickname without losing your levels; it's under options somewhere... just add the TL tag

Yeah, you can change your name no problem. Just go to Options - Account - Change Nickname.
It's only if you want to change your email that you have to start over...I think, but I know for certain you can change your nickname, since I spent the first 20 levels as just "Falcynn" before adding the TL tag.
Does anybody else get random lag spikes, or is it just me? Like, in the middle of a game, my plane suddenly won't respond to anything until 5, 6 seconds after I press the button...it get's annoying because I usually end up stalling and suiciding.
Ya i was flying miranda all day today. Holyshit- if you can handle that baby right, and gently caress her. She is un-stoppable. I was owning some kids in a 2v1 teams game it was hilarious.

My ping is about 30-40, I think, and I only occasionally get such lag spikes. Usually happens a whole bunch at a time, then hours of no lag.
Man, it gets kind of frustrating; sometimes I think I'm getting so much better, then the next day I suck it up for hours. Happens in all games I guess.

What's your preferred plane thus far? I've unlocked all of em but only played around with the loopy and the biplane. The loopy was very fun and the biplane was pretty tough... It seems pretty effective close range but it takes quite a bit getting used to. I've speced a few lvl 60s using em and they can pretty devastating but so far 0.78 k/d ratio for me

Anyways, does anyone else have problems with randomly getting disconnected from the server? I used to be perfectly fine in this game, but yesterday and the day before I kept getting disconnected in the middle of every game.
There should be a dedicated TL server up now (TeamLiquid Pony Pasture) running an all-TBD map rotation. I may end up moving that to a different computer sometime throughout the day though. If you play on it and have any issues with the config, let me know.
Yeah, that's true. I'll probably flip that setting when I get it setup on my other server (which should be in a few minutes).
Edit: I guess the major issue there is that there aren't a lot of FFA maps (only 3 that are really any good). I'll leave it on all FFA anyway, as you can just vote a map change if you want TBD, but someone needs to start making some awesome FFA maps
I really wish I had checked this out earlier, I automatically assumed that it wouldn't work on mac. Now I find that there's a mac version, and I've really been missing out.

From what I've seen pings are pretty good, a bit higher than the official servers though (100ish rather than 40ish). Lag spikes happen, but they do everywhere.
FFA's are better for servers with just a few people online, and TBD is basically the reverse. You should put TBD on cycle and then people can vote in FFA when there's fewer people online.
FFA on 14 usually goes to the explodet that snuck around and mined every tight spot and launched missiles at dogfights.
- FFA is really cool but on small maps (like FFA Hills) it is just too crowded when there's 8+ people. - FFA definitely is not just spamming f, else the people on top of the list wouldn't be the same ones all the time - The TL server is awesome! played the longest & best TBD ever on there ^_^; (ppl were at 70~ kills or so!) - All planes rock, just not in all situations - Explodet + the remote mines perk = really fun to play - Playing with the Explodet definitely is harder than it seems - Loopy & Biplane are awesome and probably the most fun to play overall - In general all the people on the game all seem pretty friendly except for this 13 yr old kid named "ilovetosuckdick" - Playing with exalted rocks (if you love it when people express their frustration when things don't go their way ^^) - regarding TL'ers: Tyr, Eagle, Jeppew & Kaolla seem to be doing pretty good - I really prefer the repair drone perk over the wing perk, but not everyone does so? - I'm not quite sure if I like Miranda's laser beam weapon better than its original weapon, but I'm using it anyways - I think this game has a lot potential and it could be so much more than it is now but I'm afraid the game as we know it now is what it's going to be
ah, well, I'm auto-joining right now and don't worry syx, you're not missing out too much. While the miranda is probably the "best" plane, Loopy's the most fun (well...imo obviously)

This is so true. Exalted is so funny to play with.
Alright, I think I'm gonna adjust the map rotation based on the comments here and the population (I had no idea the server would be so full all the time, lol ). Gonna leave a couple FFA's in the rotation, but only on the bigger maps. The rest will be TBD, and people can still vote for whatever they want.

Finally the recognition i've been waiting for my entire life! *sniff*
On April 13 2009 08:44 Smorrie wrote: - I'm not quite sure if I like Miranda's laser beam weapon better than its original weapon, but I'm using it anyways
well, the original weapon couldn't kill anyone with just a charged shot, you needed to teleport them afterwards aswell, and the laser is also the only "hitscan" weapon in the game. i'd say that the laser is much better than the trickster.
@Kuja900: Oh sorry, I just put down some names that came up right away There are more people out there that seem to be doing pretty good.. Those 4 listed I just remembered because I had just played with/against them ^^
@jeppew: The laser is pretty good if you can get a full hit onto someone, I don't think that's possible that often when being in a dog fight with a worthy opponent ^^ Especially because you'll be flying that slow and they know what you're planning to do to them.
On April 13 2009 08:44 Smorrie wrote: - I really prefer the repair drone perk over the wing perk, but not everyone does so?
Hmm. The wing perk is great with recoiless biplane. You're basically a close combat fighter with EXTREMELY good maniability. Your acceleration is phenomenal and you have very high speed. It's also very powerful : you can kill a full-life bomber comming in front of you in like 0.5 sec. Anything smaller than a bomber is a piece of cake. Explodets have a lot more life though. I don't mind going back to the base for repairs if I can't find something on the battlefield.
We've tried reverse thrust with all planes tonight, with armed_ and Falcynn. I think with proper training it can be very powerful. I think it's also very disturbing for the ennemies to see a reverse thrust Explodet (or bomber, lol).
- regarding TL'ers: Tyr, Eagle, Jeppew & Kaolla seem to be doing pretty good

yeah in a pure 1on1 where your opponent and you are circling eachother you're not going to get a full laser shot in, then it's better to charge smaller shots and use the teleport (it deals ALOT of damage). but in most situations in TBD and large FFA's you're probably going to deal more damage with the laser than a fully charged trickster, especially when defending in TBD because the one carrying the bomb usually flies in a straight path. but in the end it just comes down to aim.
I ahve like 46 TLers on my friend's list, and I'm pretty sure I don't have them all So just about every server probably contains at least one at any given time.

So I mentioned it on IRC before, but we definitely need to get some organized 5v5's going. Perhaps we can get some teams formed and run a tourney? I know I've got a 5 person team ready to go (yay college ), so lets get some teams, find good times to play, and get to it!

All the tbd serves are usually 7v7. Is 5v5 standard for competitive matches in Altitude or just a random number? We have 50+ guys, why not make it 7v7 to accomodate more ppl.

We could definitely do 7v7, 5v5 is just the number Locked and I were talking about (although I'm not quite sure why). I guess its really a matter of figuring out what works best, but I feel like 7v7 is actually a bit too much. There haven't really been any organized competitive matches thus far (to my knowledge), so we're kind of breaking new ground here.

Okay, I think a 5v5 or a 7v7 can both be good.
Question: is it easy to set up a server? Do you need a dedicated machine? If so, do you think we could use the TL server? I haven't looked into how much juice is needed - not much, I'm sure, but let me know.
We should set up either a schedule league or a ladder. Thoughts? A ladder + an irc channel on quakenet would probably be best. We could either host the standings somewhere (anyone know a good ladder website? I'd set it up[edit: is fraggednation okay with people?]) or I'd handle everything via this thread and OP. We'd have to run with screen shots and such, but it really shouldn't be too hard either way.
I think this can be pretty fun if we put a tiny bit of effort in.
My name is [TL]Falcynn, although I originally started the account without the tag so I'm not sure if it matters when you try to search me.
Anyways, if there's a league being started I'm open to joining/starting a new team My performance is pretty inconsistent with bursts of being omgwtfawesome, to sucking horribly, but I'm a good team player and can reverse thrust like a mofo (although I don't think that's really a strength )
Edit: also since after asking around, it seems I'm not the only one who has problems with servers randomly timing out on them, how are we gonna handle disconnects in league games? Or should we just wait until we actually get things established before going over that?

I was planning on just utilizing the TL server. I can easily set up a passworded config and such that we can put up whenever a league/ladder game is going on. As to the server requirements, you don't really need a dedicated machine, the major thing is really just having enough bandwidth (need about 3KB/s per player). Other than that it pretty much uses very little processing power and maybe 30-40 megs of ram at most.
The only issue with a ladder is that the matches need to be somewhat scheduled in advance, unless we can figure out a way to run a ladder server dynamically on demand (which may be doable, but its sorta tough with the current server setup).
Either way though, I think this will be a lot of fun and should let us push this game to new heights
another option other than the ladder is a CAL-style league:
Schedules are handed out. default game nights are Tuesday and Thursday and the two teams decide which night works best for them. The game is played (bo3? bo5? the games are not too long) by the deadline (sunday each week) and screenshots are sent in and the standings are updated each week.
5v5 or 7v7 sound good to me. I'd play on a team, I'd say my dogfighting is pretty shaky, but I seem to be a pretty good bombrunner. Also, I mostly play biplane.
And I'd totally be up for some organized matches. 5v5 seems like it would play better than 7v7 to me, but it's not as if anybody's had experience with serious competitive matches to tell.

I'm totally down.
I think that sounds totally great And yeah, matches are short, we can definitely knock out a bo3 or bo5 in no time at all (and those numbers work well with the number of good TBD maps that are in existance).
Whenever I get around to restarting the server tonight, maps in the rotation will be TBD only (and TBD_middleground will be in the rotation as well). FFA is just too hectic with a full 14-man server on those maps, and since the server seems to be full like 95% of the time, TBD it is
Here's a first draft of rules and ideas. It's just to get the ball rolling. Let me know what you think of all of it and I'll change things based on quality of idea/consensus. Again, just a very rough first draft: tear it to pieces and tell me what would be better!
The league's first season will be run for a full 4 weeks.
A team will have 2 matches scheduled per week. It is up to the two teams to agree on a play date. If the two teams cannot agree, the default is Wednesday night (very much up for discussion).
Schedules will be sent out via PM and posted in this OP. The top teams will be placed in a playoff bracket, the size of which depends on how many teams participate in the regular season.
A regular season match will be a best of 3 series on the week's designated TBD map. Screenshots of the post-game screen must be captured after every game and should be submitted to the admin immediately following the game.
A playoff match will be a best of 5 series. The finals will be a best of 7. All regular season rules apply.
A team must have at least 5 total pilots including a designated captain. There is no maximum limit on the number of pilots a team can have.
A captain is the player who must be available and easy to reach. We will be using the TL PM system and so a captain must check his TL PMs regularly so that opposing teams and league admins can contact you easily.
I am away from my PC with Altitude installed so it is difficult for me to answer a few questions I have about the game. Any help would be appreciated with the following questions:
Is it possible to verify the account or ip of a player? I doubt we'll have problems with smurfing or a WDT incident - that's pretty dumb for a small league. However, I'm still wondering if it's possible to see who is really playing other than just reading the nickname a player might have at that exact moment.

Looks good
Its possible to check the IP a player connected with through the server log, I know that much.
Major thing we need to figure out is what to do about people that lag out/disconnect. I'm not really sure what the best course of action is there.
Replays don't exist (although they should ), but Obs spots are easily doable (for 1-2 obs). Maybe we could rig up some sort of broadcast? I'm not sure.
Edit: actually, obs could have some problems with the 5 minute inactivity kick, hmm...

dang a broadcast would be pretty cool..
is the 5 minute inactivity kick in all games or is it a server variable? i'll talk to the dev if it is for all games. it should be a server variable! let me know the specifics and i will talk to the dev about it.
"Server variables" don't really exist (well, I mean, there are configuration options, but they're not modifiable once the server is started). The 5-minute thing is not configurable at this time (although it could probably be implemented, so definitely check with the dev).
what are the configuration options? can you configure how much down time a player has in between deaths? that seems fairly important for competition and should probably be a little higher than it is for pub games.
At this point in time, all you can really configure is the map pool, how many players can play, min/max levels, password, and who can do what commands. Other than that, its all hard-coded. I'm sure a lot of it could be brought out into the config though, its just a matter of getting the devs to do it.
Well it's still in beta, more commands are probably gonna come with time.. On a side note I hate people in TBD everyone just going straight into enemy bases, no one wants do defend homebase which leads to some pretty stupid losses.
EDIT: Oh and I think we should definitely ask for needed commands on the dev's forum EDIT2: As to the respawn time changes I think prolonging them would just make people use explodets even more since they last the longest

Here's my download folder, should be all of em (rest come with the game).
if we are going to organize matches we might want to think about limiting how many planes of any given class each team is allowed to have, limit it to two or something, or else we might see stall matches with 5 eplodets on each team. it's worth testing if any such team sort of "warps" how the game is played too much.
Question, in the game options they have the 1680x1050 resolution which is the native res for most 22" widescreens but when I select that option It doesn't make it full screen unless I select to stretch which means it's not really 1680x1050. What's the purpose?
played some really nice games today, one really long and even match on TBD_Middleground. it seems that in 7vs7 it's really hard to attack because the base will almost never be undefended, the games are much shorter in 5v5.
Random suggestion, for the finals or playoffs, maybe they could be Bo3 maps, and each map is Bo3 (or 5-7) games? Then maybe instead of picking the maps before hand, the teams agree to the first map and the loser picks the next maps afterwards.
I dunno, it just seems like the playoffs and finals should incorporate more than one map for some reason to me. That draft actually looks perfect, I'm just throwing out a random idea.

Yeah that game was sick. Middleground is a great map.
yea thanks alot for the server! still dont rly like some maps tho especially the one with the 3 bomb/powerup spots on top of each other.. supergay map +_+; also its too bad everyone is against ffa.. its definately not a key pressing fest as most ppl here claim >_<; even with many ppl i think its still alot of fun, except on cave with explodets -_-

yeah middleground and asteroids are probably the two best TBD maps. i also like lost city but it's kinda small.

I think it's better to just not worry about it, if it does become an issue we can deal with it then. The best form of testing is normal competitive play.

Tip: I suggest you don't use the arrow keys for movement, they're too close to the wasd keys and are lower as well making it uncomfortable/unhealthy for your wrist if you play for long durations. I find that it's better to use the numpad for movement or you can use the wasd keys for movement and the numpad for shooting if you haven't got too used to the default game controls yet.

Not[TL]_Computer, I thought you were called Computer and not from TL.
People should idle more on IRC and maybe we can get a scrim going or something as a step towards the league.
We will definitely consider features designed for league play. Server configuration options are typically fairly easy to implement so we'll add those if concrete needs are identified. I'm not sure why you'd need an inactivity kick option though -- the 5 minute kick applies only if you do not touch the keyboard for 5 minutes. I'm assuming an observer/broadcaster would constantly be zipping around the map, cycling chase targets, etc, to try to keep the best view of the action.
I don't have any experience with showmatches/game broadcasting in general, so I'm very open to suggestions from those who've spent a lot of time in that arena. I'm guessing several TL people have a lot of experience with the various 1st and 3rd party tools for games like CS and SC, so I'm curious to hear which 1st-party tools are helpful/necessary, overall best practices, etc.
Demo recording makes sense, but it will probably take some work so it's not a top priority for initial release.
teamliquid.net's Altitude League Dates: April 26 to May 24, 2009 Entry Fee: May cost your social life
Alright, the ball is officially rolling.
I was wondering if we could make a rule to perhaps limit miranda usage to 1 per team or something because on mayhem for example those things are dreadfully overpowered so their the defacto choice for competitive play but their boring noone wants to see 10 mirandas.

Well, we could always make it a requirement that they have to become a registered TL member to compete.
Smorrie and Kaolla would like to join a team or start one with decent people.. We are quite ok at this game both lvl 56 or somethng like that and we would rly love to play in this league... If anyone wants to join us in a team or would like us to join his/her team plz send a PM ! thx
Smorrie: All rounder, good with all planes, especially with explodet and loopy.. not the best big bomb dropper...
Kaolla: Horrible with miranda, best with biplane (or loopy)... quite all round for the rest... biggest weakness is probably being a bit inconsistent (can play horrible 1 game and quite well the next >_< ) and too agressive at times...
I think I'm finally getting the hang of the explodet. Lately I've been managing a 2:1 kd ratio, although my kills are usually on the low side. For example if the top score is 35 kills, I'll usually be something like 15-7.
Wow this game is fun. I'm [TL]Air-Bean, Loopy Pilot. I'll come out of nowhere and kill you, then crash into a wall while trying to get away. I don't know the meaning of slowing down.
At first I was like SOOOO BAD. I would just run into walls by my self and die. I am pretty decent with miranda now. My plane control is pretty average but I play kinda cheap (hit and run lol). In my opinion, bouncy shot >>>>> laser. I think miranda;s hardest matchup is biplane with heavy cannon.

Meh camping mirandas are annoying, they stay in a tight spot using their bouncy ball and teleport. Best solution I found so far is to just wait till they come out and get in a vulnerable position otherwise just don't bother.

While it is possible (and depending on the Miranda pilot's skill it could also be easy) to kill a Miranda, I still consider it imba as shit since Mirandas have a much easier time at killing.

Using recoiless biplanes it can be quite difficult to kill mirandas at close range, since they magically get behind you and biplanes are slow to turn around. This has happened way too often...
hahha I get some ridiculous killing sprees with miranda its so fun. You can really juke out so many people if its not way out in the open.
I think liek half the time i die is cus i misjudge teleport recharge lol. But then again I spam that skill way too much. Sometimes I shoot and tele on habit which got me killed many times
I know it's really too early to be discussing this, but what do you guys think would be an effective team? Right now I'd really be excited about seeing a team of 2 biplanes, 2 loopies, and a miranda. I'm not sure exactly how effective it'd be, but with the loopies EMPing everything and the biplanes and miranda sweeping up it'd be cool to watch at least.
You seem like you're assuming the team would always be around together with that setup, which really isn't the case. Personally, I think the setup should be more based on positional things (defense, offense, etc.), so I'm leaning towards a setup like 2 biplanes or biplane/loopy, a bomber, a miranda, and maybe an explodet. I guess it really depends on how aggressive you want to be. We really need to get a scrim going and see what works (aka everyone get on #tl.altitude!)
I have a feeling miranda wont be very good in scrims. Miranda lacks firepower and health. Its main advantage is survivability, but surviving wont help the team much. Loopy and biplane are better at running bombs too so ..
I think its main purpose in my team will be defensive. I think the way it manuevers allows it to keep a better handle on the opposing team's offensive attacks, which gives it an advantage there.
i am etherone in game as well, i suck at loopy and bomber. pretty good with biplane and miranda 1.17 and 1.19 respectively and rising, I do not have cannon yet. but will soon ^ ^
i can say actual kills, and these stats will vary a bit since i will be playing hopefully for the better XD

If you have time anchor along with the other abilities you can warp around like crazy in all directions making it very hard to kill the miranda unless you're really surrounded. I've seen one of the old schoolers use it really well for bomb runs.

Biplanes are the only plane I have trouble killing with the miranda. The Biplane has as much HP as a bomber and is small as hell, not to mention pretty fast. Even if the biplane cant kill me on the first pass, its usually extremely hard to finish up the kill because of their hp/speed.
It takes like 3 charges with the miranda to finish the biplane, which isnt even factoring in how slowly you will be charging your 2nd/3rd shots because of how much you need to use the 180.
I might be wrong, but I consider the biplane the counter to miranda's.
Maybe we could put together a list of what is strong against what, I really dont know enough about the other planes but for the miranda i think its:
Biplane: Miranda at disadvantage, like I said above, it can be extremely hard to finish off a biplane due to their speed/hp/size, and the biplane can output such insane damage in such a short time, most of the time i'll be happy to just get away from the fight with more than half health.
Bomber: Even, I think this one depends on too many variables to give a definate advantage to either plane, any red perk other than bombs help the bomber so much here. You can pelt the miranda with either of the rear firing perks, which is usually enough to finish them off if you landed a few bombs earlier, but it's too easy for the miranda to run away, if the mirada stops firing and decides to teleport away theres really nothing the bomber can do, it's attack is just too slow. But the bomber is big as shit, slow as shit, and has the same HP as a biplane, without the advantage of being able to run away. Usually the miranda is able to pick where the fight happens, and get the first shot, which is easy as hell to land on a bomber. This one just comes down to aim, if the bomber can land it's shots theres no way it can be at a disadvantage here.
Explodet: Miranda at advantage, at the very best I think the explodet gets a draw here, in open spaces all a miranda has to do is stay above or below the explodet and keep charging up shots, the bomber is just way too slow to get a shot on the miranda or run away. At the very best the explodet can just lay some mines and run to the nearest choke/turn and go heal. Miranda's 180 is a direct defense against mines, and the explodets missile is so damn slow and bad, it can get dodged so easily but using miranda's afterburner once.
Loopy: Miranda at huge advantage, the loopy really doesnt have a chance here unless they get the drop on the miranda pretty early, even then all it takes is a quick 180 and charged shot to put loopy near death. Even vs the best loopys on the server I still find it really easy to kill them.
On April 17 2009 11:50 ghermination wrote: Been playing this for the past week or so. Its a great game, although i dont really see the league thing taking off.
was that a pun AND an insult? WHY I OUGHTA!
Ehh dont worry, this notion will get shot down pretty quick.
Yea same here sixghost. I came to pretty much the same conclusions. Biplane is the bane of mirandas. Cus they survive 2 fully charged shots i think. Maybe its just my play style but i tend to fire semi charged shots frequently cus it just takes way too long to charge fully when ur using 180 alot. Its hard to kill biplanes 1v1 thats for sure. Bomber also poses a threat but its much easier to maneuver perpendicular to them to stay out of their attack radius.
Ive been experimenting with time anchor and it seems pretty good. It is definitely a good skill but its so extremely hard to use effectively. The hardest thing for me is keeping track of the direction I will be facing when I warp back. Sometimes I warp and turn into a wall and die (well I tend to crash alot anyway so maybe its just me). Its really not the best in terms of fighting, but like BG1 said its very good for juking people out. I think its pretty fun and effective in its own right, but its not useful in all situations like the 180
it's pretty different for me, a full laser shot kills anything, except maybe an explodet with armor (and he'll wish he had died, having to go all the way back to base to heal in the slowest thing in the air). you mainly use laser coming from the side or behind at longer ranges to sweep along them as they go forward, if your aim isn't too shoddy you'll kill them pretty easily. it's better the fewer players there are on the server aswell.
biplanes and bombers are pretty easy, you can outmanouver them easily, and in close combat you'll be able to juke yourself away if necessary.
explodets are REALLY easy they can't dodge and will take a full laser to the face, mines are no problem and the missile isn't going to hit you more than once at most, 180 fixes any stalling problems you might get.
loopies are the most dangerous, laser is only good at longer ranges and you rely on teleport and short charges in close combat, they get up close and EMP ruins you. avoid them in open spaces at all costs.

Ehh dont worry, this notion will get shot down pretty quick.
You're doing it wrong, if you don't bold the pun then it'll just fly over everyone's heads.

Altitude was just released on Steam today and the formerly small population is sky rocketing. Also, for this week only the price for full game has been cut in half to 10$. There is an established TL community in altitude (bg1, tyr, devils, myself, eth, bg1, apathy, gameguard, curious, stormich, cloud, quite a few others) and we have become the established dominant players (my team fLb won the last and is preparing to win the current league which is at the finals stage and yes it is an all TL final). So for all you TLers who played Alt back in march/april or anyone else interested please come join us!
edit: note there is a free demo if you want to just come and give the game a try, head on over to altitudegame.com or pick it up on steam.
Yeah, should be noted that the game is currently only 10 bucks for the people who liked it but thought it was too expensive before. Grab it quick, on steam or not.

Hahaha. ACE will win, everyone knows that. We lost last time just so you can play a bit more. We were like "ok let's go 3-0 and then lose 4 matches so that we play another bo7 later". :D
Ok, anyway yeah, really, we all have over 500 hours played on this game, and it was 20$ at the time. Now it's only 10$ Some people pay 50$ to play 5 hours on MW2 Really, it's worth it. I'd love to see some old TLers back on Alt (CSHEEP WHERE ARE YOU ? <3)
Haha, re-reading this thread is awesome. Page after page of TLers loving this game, including epic quotes like Kuja "explo is the protoss 1a2a3a of altitude" and eth "i suck with loopy". silly fLb
Seriously guys, now is the time to try it out again. it's just become available on steam/direct2drive/gamersgate so there are plenty of other newbies to play with. it's great times
edit- lol i spent 5c/hour so far on Altitude. and that number is dropping with every hour i play

it's a free demo, might as well play a round or two
But yeah, they are some pretty good randa users out there. Well, every plane has some pro users.
Oh yeah, before I forget again, I'll link two videos, one made by Beagle, and the other one by me. Respectively Heavy Cannon biplane + reverse thruse, and recoilless biplane.
Sweet :D. The game is ridiculously fun, I can virtually guarantee that you'll enjoy it.
tbh, I'm disappointed by how few of the old TLers have replied in this thread! I know for a fact that lots of people loved this game, and right now is a great time to get back into it. With the release on Steam/etc the servers are fuller than ever (hundreds of people online at a time), the new maps and new game modes are fantastic, and frankly TLers pwn at Altitude!
I think the $10 sale ends today (then it goes up to $15) so get on that demo and give it a shot, see if you still like it!
I just got this game a few days ago and it's awesome - I've been playing a lot and trying to get good. Where do you guys usually play? It seems like the non-bouncy TBD servers usually have the best players, so I've been playing on those mostly and trying to get good enough to not die constantly.
I'm stiknork in game, message me if you guys want to play.
On December 12 2009 02:50 BrTarolg wrote: Well, it seems pretty fun, ill pay 10 dollars for it
On the condition i have people to play with... How do i get in contact with everyone/organise games and stuff
Check out forums at altitudegame.com/forums, also a few of us oldschoolers / leagueplayers hang out in #tl.altitude on IRC(quakenet). Also we usually play in one of the hardwalls servers(fuck bouncy.. hopefully it gets reverted soon), preferably one of the 5v5 ones Be seeing ya.
Basically almost all ACE player are from TL and a good part of fLb too. We're the largest part of what's left of the first TL wave on this game. There are a few others such as Pholon or nobodyhome but that's pretty much it.
We usually play on Official #1 to #3, on "New England" servers and more generally, on tbd servers with normal (non-bouncy) walls.
I played the shit out of this game when it was free (and i guess i was okay? never got raped in TBD or anything, always got a lot of kills) but i can't justify spending $10 on this, it just isn't worth it.

People pay $50 all the time for games they play 10-20 hours max. $10 for a game that has an average buyer playtime of 80hours (that's average buyer, lamster and Karl released the stats; for most good players, it's hundreds of hours) is the best deal you can possibly get in gaming.
Maybe you're judging by the simple nature of the game, or the 2D graphics or something, but based on pure gameplay, Altitude is worth its pricetag many many times over.
I love how you cant justify spending $10. $10 is a fucking pencil man. But I guess pencils are expensive these days.. pencils pencils. Hmmm.. maybe I should go buy me a pencil.
If you dont enjoy the game, thats fine, but please for the love of god dont blame the $10 pricetag rofl.

There's quite a lot of people with a ~200-250 ping, it's not reaaaaally a big deal. Please come back, no one has forgot IntoTheWalls. :D Bring locked, pachi and the others back as well. :D
Stupid ball ~_~ I have around 180 hours in this game, used to be all I played until I started up League of Legends. Anyone trying to justify the price... $20 / 180 hours.
On December 24 2009 21:30 wbirdy wrote: hello TL, i just bought this game on steam! anyone kind enough to show me the ropes? :D
Play on normal wall TBD servers, preferably 5v5 servers. It'll be hard in the beginning but you learn fast in this game. A bunch of us are still playing it, add us to your friends list.
Yeah, we're usully hanging around on official servers #1,2,3 or 6 Try to play as much on normal (not bouncy) walls as possible as BG1 said, you will learn more quickly to not crash. Try every plane, of course, but if you see one that fits your playstyle, try to stick to it for a while and become better with it. There are some guides on the official forum to help beginners. See you in the game. ^^
Bought the game few days ago. Used to play back when it was free so some of you might remember me (most likely not, but whatever). Ingame name: IMlemon. Feel free to give me a shout.
Yes, actually. I stopped playing because my old pc crapped out and I was stuck on a laptop for a year. I just got a new PC and I'm on lately for sure. Plus I'm in irc all the time.
On March 05 2010 06:25 theonemephisto wrote: $2? That's crazy. Just for reference, I've played for over 95 hours going strong and I'm definitely not one of the more hardcore players.
Yeah there might not be people in the TL servers since theres not much point in sitting in empty servers waiting for people to come lol. I played in the pony pastures for a bit, just for old times' sake. but yeah, join the officials and ladder servers and you'll find us.
I played Altitude a bunch when it was free. I checked on steam and it seems to be $10. Also, I can't find the indie pack that includes it, as others have mentioned exists. If someone hooks me up I might start again.
I played the demo for as long as I could. Very fun game, and probably much funner with a group of people you know. I couldn't convince any of my friends to try it with me though. :d
I'm thinking about investing in the game but I'm kinda poor so..

Just a quick heads up if anyone misses it http://store.steampowered.com/news/3841/ there's a free "weekend" going on right now and the game is gonna be at 50% discount for a couple of days
Whats the difference between the demo and real thing?
I played on the "free weekend" and it was saying i had like 7 hours left.. but now that its not weekend anymore, It turned into demo =[ Is there any major differences?

Afaik you only get 3 hours of play time before the demo expires and you can only play with the loopy and bomber.
On May 24 2010 12:46 Scaramanga wrote: Wow i forgot compleatly about altitude , how many people that first played on the tl sever still play? Wait is fLb still intact?
Alot of the people from the first TL wave still play but not nearly as much. With the free weekend thing, there was a ridiculous influx of new players and new random servers thats making it hard to get a good game going with alot of good players.
But this game is really good. I dont see why its not worth whatever measly dollars its going for now. I bought it for 20 dollars and played for like 900 hrs or soemthing over the past year.

tried the demo after seeing the new Altitude TLI but can't really say that I found what's so amazing about it sure its a fun game for maybe an half hour. It seams like almost everyone is loving it so I don't really know what I'm missing...

I played the beta when TL was first introduced to it and it was huge amounts of fun, now it seems like the TL servers are all empty and if you want to play you'll have to play with the random retards coming from other gaming scenes aka. no fun.
Hm, I just finished the tutorial so I'm basically a random retard, lol. I'd like to join the Pony Pasture though!! When do people usually play, and is the list of handles in the OP current or from beta? :x
you should probably post on the altitude forums if your looking for old tlers or other vets. Just joining pubs probably wont work cus there is too many random servers and people right now
Figured I should post this for the new players... Though Altitude is a pretty simple game it does require some skill to be good at and has a lot of potential for competitive play. We've just finished the 3rd Altlitude league, there's an Altitude ladder and there's plenty of tournaments organized by members of the community on the Altitude forums. Due to Altitude's cartoonish look and simplicity many people do not give it the credit it really deserves. I've played this game more than I've played almost any other game and for a measly sum too! Most of TL's Altitude veterans have logged over 500 hours of playtime... It's a really fun game, especially once you participate in the more competitive, team oriented stuff. I really suggest you try it out!
Getting a real feel for the miranda again, if you cover the general outside area of your spawn in ball mode, you can net alot of loopy/biplane kills and really help your team. As long as you know how to 1v1 correctly as miranda. Definitely my favorite mode.
Its not something you can play as a staple game but its certainly good to play for 5-10mins here and there when you can't play something else that might take longer like BW or whatever.
Unfortunately I keep getting dropped from the TL servers, so they're unplayable. Other people I was playing with yesterday were complaining of the same thing.
I'm really enjoying this game, except for all the noob teams. Whenever I play a team-based game I nearly always end up succumbing to team-rage. Playing TBD with a good team is amazingly fun, but playing with teams who don't know how to block, escort or bomb-carry is just infuriating.
edit - actually, I'll correct that. I don't mind if people don't know how to do those things, as then there is a good reason for not doing them and there is a chance that they'll learn, but it's those people who obviously know how to play the game decently, but just don't ever help their team.

Play in ladder or captain's games servers, much more organized and competitive there.

Oh really? I'll def give that a try. I know I'm foolish for expecting any level of teamwork on pub servers.
I'm australian so its really hard to find a server with people that i wont get kicked from, even then ive got 190 ping and strugle to do anything, dosent help when i put filters on for games with no players and the filters dont even work
also got it just now... its really fun and kinda addictive ^^ got a question for the "pros" though: do you all play with keyboard/mouse combo? I find it really hard to control the throttle that way

I dont think anyone plays seriously with the mouse.. it's just way too messy :p

thats the same feeling I have, but at the same time keyboard/mouse just feels "smoother" as long as you can control it properly

how can you play with both? Everytime i try to use a keyboard command after using the mouse i have to click twice to sort of activate the game again.
Hey, I bought the game, not because they supported the sc2 scene, but because it was so damn fun. Even with my high ping I am able to play for fun. I think as long as I avoid bomb carrying nobody seems to notice.
You can find me on official server 2 or 3 usually, or any real wall <20 people server. Could sure use some mentoring :D. I do ok with mouse and loopy... but trying to gain some real skills instead of altitude cheesing, so I have been practicing alot with explodet since somebody told me they are the most often needed on teams. I think the trickster is more fun, but perhaps it is just because all I manage to do with the whale is spin in circles for ever. Really need to be able to turn tighter .

I use a gamepad. It's way more fun that way, at least for me.
The server that was running the TL servers is currently running my custom King of the Hill game mode. Its not fully done yet, but its definitely playable. If you can get a few people together to play it, you should definitely check it out!
I've been playing quite a bit lately, it's a lot of fun. I mainly use miranda (laser or trickster, depending on mood) or maybe recoiless biplane. I'm also getting near level 60 again and this time I won't be a moron and reset.
Yay do it. Would be really cool if new TL players create a new clan or something. :D ACE and fLb are still around, if a 3rd TL clan was created I have no doubt it would dominate as well after a while. :D
Tried this out a long time ago but now that they sponsored the TL Open, I decided to check it out again and it sure enough got me hooked. Bought the game .
Just wanted to bump this because I've been playing alot lately and it's really fun. I recently tried playing a bit more competetively (ladder) and it's the most awesome thing ever.
Certain players playing on ladder may get pretty angry if your team loses (including myself). Try not to be too discouraged by them. Even if you're not the best, keep practicing and observe the pros to see why they're doing specific stuff and whatever. The skill ceiling is actually pretty high in this game. ^^
Glad to see knew that there are still new TLers that are joining this game. ^^
Don't hesitate to go visit the official forums too. Lots of discussion about the game and ladder and whatnot.
I just got it too, and I have to say the game is awesome. Even playing with random noobs is fun, though if there would be a TL server (I don't think there is anymore?) and my ping wouldn't be too bad, I'd give it a try
Hey does anyone want to play ? After 3 months casually playing I reached the point where people ask me to join their funny sounding clans. But I still have not bought the game because I am not sure if I want to keep playing it even though I know they sponsor BW I am a bad human, I know
Bump! Altitude just recently became free on Steam. If you have any friends that have been reluctant to drop money on the game you can go ahead and get them playing right now! Hopefully this will help get more people on the servers too. Happy flying!
I was just about to post something, platypuses0 :D
I've spent so much of time on this game, many years of my life. I'm happy to see it finally become free. There are so many people playing again, it really has revitalized this game. Warms my heart.
Me and my friends have occassional LAN's at my m8's house once every few months. Few weeks ago we started playing this there and it was damn epic. 6v6 flying crazy,,. omggg..
This game instantly became one of our multiplayer standards (next to Quake3, TF2 and some others) :D
