No, you see, you introduce a game that the original should have been, then claim you won't stop supporting the first. This soothes the playerbase somewhat because, hey, we're still relevant and CCP cares about us. Now, since this is a better game then the original, new players will go to that one, and not the old one (also due to it being on the PC), and players that have DUST514 will also go to the new game (its better, and its not on a shit platform, so it would be stupid not to change).

Thus the playerbase for DUST514 dwindles over time, until it reaches a very low point, then CCP says to everyone, sorry guys but we can't support this anymore, no one is playing this game. They might give people a matchmaking thing that is disconnected from Eve or something just to say they did something, then stop most support. Now no one blames CCP that DUST died, because hey, people stopped playing it, it had nothing to do with CCP actions, they weren't malicious or evil in the slightest.

But really, it was planned and probably scheduled.

it's fine, but you cant use combat probes with a core probe launcher. And you should not use combat probes to scan relic and data sites. Core Scan Probes are a lot better for that. Also if you have trouble scanning stuff you can fit a second gravity capacitor upgrade

A lot of people bought into the hype that was PS3, CCP included. Memories may be failing at this point, but Sony promised quite a lot out of the console at launch. It behaved like a PC in terms of software (to the point where you could load linux distros on it out of the box) so it promised the perfect combination of ease of development - software without weird restrictions and solid, standardized hardware. Sony promised that Console Development Would Change and that This Is The Turning Point etc. in terms of how developers and publishers would interact with Sony in terms of patching and middleman throughput - basically they promised that the barriers between the developers and the gamers would be unprecedentedly small.

At the time, people became invested in the idea that the console singularity had come - that there was basically no difference now between consoles and PCs and that everything would exist in peace and harmony and rainbows and unicorns shitting good intentions and happiness etc. The thing is, Sony didn't deliver on that promised experience, and CCP found that out the hard way - by diving into it headfirst.

CCP has always been shaky with systems. In big, complicated games, "philosophy" isn't enough. You really need someone dedicated to working out how systems interact, you need someone to quantify all those interactions and categorize them in order to even begin understanding them. That in itself would cause problems with any game. CCP had never programmed an FPS before - much less a multiplayer FPS. Though gamers take it for granted, even just programming a simple multiplayer FPS is an extreme task. It requires a lot of very specialized engineering knowledge regarding networking and fundamental limits of CPUs etc. + Show Spoiler [aside] +
One of the most impressive games of our time, technologically speaking, is Planetside 2. Whatever you may think of the game, your jaw hits the floor if you can really conceive of the complexity of problems that require solving and the menagerie of techniques used to solve them.
And then FPSs put even more stress on your systems of interaction. If some system is a little shaky or a pair of systems interacts a little iffy, players will break the shit out of it. Patching these systems is dangerous and can result in massive instabilities (in terms of systems interactions) if you don't have everything analyzed properly.

Now imagine after jumping through all those initial hurdles, finding the right team of engineers to solve all their engine and network interactions, bug stomping - then every time you want to make a patch that touches a certain system, you have to wait for 1-3 months for your gatekeepers to sign off on it while a third of your staff (you pay 80k a year each) sits on their hands and waits or works on low-priority junk. Imagine being the project manager when your team finds a solution to a major problem that is holding back your game, and you have to tell them to find some other solution because the one they came up with will never pass the certification process in a timely manner.

The market reality is that consoles will always come with gatekeepers until all the gatekeepers come together and agree that it's more profitable for all of them if a console existed that could play all their games (they won't). Gatekeepers don't solve problems, they manage them. Furthermore, gatekeepers don't make anything easier, they only introduce a new set of problems (which they, in turn, manage). This is the reality of console development. You get an easier time with hardware but at a potentially enormous and unquantifiable cost in, for all intents and purposes, handing over control of your game to someone who isn't working on it.

Zeus knows I'm not defending CCP. A business should have better sense than to throw money at every Star Citizen that comes along. You don't follow hype and promises with money, you follow it with caution and scrutiny. My knowledge on Dust is dreadfully little, but I don't imagine their systems are any more polished than the ones in EVE - CCP seems to have been the forerunner in letting Game Designers (i.e. average people that can open excel and mouse drag) design systems and then to have little in the way of supporting staff looking over and analyzing those systems. That's something they really need to change in EVE, or it will bounce back and hurt them one day. That may already be happening with the unprecedented power creep that has taken place in the last couple of years.

Hopefully Dust's solemn, freakishly-animated corpse will serve as a warning to developers thinking of moving their games to console and to gamers considering buying into big long-term projects with any console (because the magic always manages to die away when the next console That Will Fix All The Problems comes around). If Dust had been a PC-only game (as it should have been), it still might have failed. It still might have amounted to nothing. But the ride would have been smoother, and it wouldn't be wholesale abandoned like what is happening right now. They might as well upload the client and server code to abandonia at this rate.

... I could see the Dust 5/14 coming a mile away - mostly because CCP likes to try new things they have little experience in doing, and then working it up, trying it on for awhile, then quietly putting it on the shelf and never ever mentioning it again unless there are thousands of people shooting a monument in Jita.

Examples include, but are not limited to, World of Darkness Online (only recently killed) which brought us Incarna (ahem) and the NEX and the Captain's Quarters and possibly some part of Dust 514.

They have managed to do Eve decently. Maybe Valkyrie will be okay.

Also, has anyone ever seen a GROPO (erm, Dust fighter dude) in a system chat anywhere in Eve? Anyone ever fired at the ground? Has Dust ever had an effect on planetary structures? Speaking of, what the hell ever happened to planetary resources anyways?

The whole problem with captains quarters and that shit was that they promoted it 24/7 for months, then it was shit. If they slipped it in casually with other spaceship related content, no one would have complained, they probably would have cheered for days.

You have my blanket permission to do whatever you wish as long as it contributes to the downfall of that awful website.

I'm not one of those "PC > all lulzuckmad1kc" guys, really. I don't see a problem with consoles in principle. It's just that in practice, they never bring the benefits they should. In 2014, why can't I install my PC game on a console and vice versa? Consoles are really just vehicles for big publishers to create monopolies, they are not tools designed to benefit gamers in any way. The other thing that's really fucking annoying about them being separate is the concept of ports. When I can't use a mouse in a game I installed on my PC, I just want to murder someone. Things like that make no sense and are helpful to no one except the publisher monopolies created by the consoles themselves. So I don't hate the idea of consoles, just the stupid philosophy behind the monopoly machines that are released today.

All things being equal, there is quite literally no reason to buy a game for a console when you could buy it on PC. The thing is, the console publishers have created all kinds of artificial situations where all things aren't equal. None of those artificial constructs benefit society in any way.

There are some skillplans for low point alts... but they use 51/81 days from a fresh character, not 30 days from a couple of junkey skills.

That's fine, ideally you want a cloak on your high as well for the mwd cloak trick (google it if you haven't heard about it). It'll give you a lot more options for getting out of sticky situations

Where are you using it? Hi, low or null sec?

Anyways, the advice below assumes you're heading to nullsec or lowsec.

For the lows there's a couple of ways to go about it;
1. Fit with agility enhancers (nanos are ideal) to shave off your the next second off your warp speed (remember that warp speed is based on 1 second ticks, 4.1 seconds is functionally the same as 5 seconds). If you can get your warpspeed down to 3 seconds, then you will be safe from most non-instalockers. I prefer this, especially for nullsec, where there are bubbles or when you need to move about cloaked.

2. Warp stabs. 3 Warp stabs so you can escape if you get pointed or scrammed, or a combination of stabs + agility lows.

3. Tanking, so you can afford to take a hit or two if you need to crash a gate. I don't advise this on tech1 exploration frigates, the idea is that you shouldn't be getting shot at in the first place, though if you got a spare slot that damage control gives quite a bit of EHP.

In regards to your modules, you dont need a tech 2 cargo scanner, you can use a meta one instead.
Rigs I would use 2 gravity capacitors, but if the second one doesn't actually decrease the number of scans you need, you can cut it for something else. I'd probably put something like an agility rig if it helps you shave off a second of warp time, or an archaeology rig for nullsec sites. Cargohold rigs or mods arent really needed in nullsec, where most of the money is in tech 2 salvage, you can just jettison the bulky junk.

For the probe launcher, its nice that you got access to the Core Probe launcher II, I'd stick with that over the sisters core probe launcher since those are about 60 mil upwards. You'll need to use core scanner probes with core probe launchers, if you want to use combat probes you need an expanded launcher. Combat scanner probes aren't as good for scanning down sites anywways. Sisters core probes are a very nice upgrade for not too much money.

Drones are fairly irrelevant, I'd use ECM drones if you can but they probably wont help much.

Hope that helps!

If you've looked on their FAQ or any of the actual serious posts, that;s exactly why they are against consoles (which are synonymous to the companies that make them).

Also the hilarious dissonance that some people spout when they defend their console they bought, that is also posted.

Strangely enough, as a circlejerk based subreddit, they are actually more calm and reasonable than some of the serious subreddits.

Like it matters what a subreddit says on their FAQ.

Without reading the subreddit even once, I am going to dismiss it wholesale and deliver this judgment: they almost certainly contribute to the console vs. PC "wars" just as much as shitfests like IGN etc. The reason I can make such claims with no evidence is that I know how reddit works. Reddit goes in one direction - down. I bet damn near 50% of people on that subreddit own one of the consoles in question and plan to buy one of the new ones in the future.

You can have the most well-thought-out, intelligent mission statement in the world, but 99% of the people that inhabit your space will be sickly creatures incapable of even the most elementary modes of building up an informed viewpoint. They will just rehash and recycle the crude sound bites that were distributed to them when they signed up.

Reddit is filth and garbage. It is mankind's most complete (as of yet) expression of direct democracy, and it disgusts me.

Now it's confusing. Do I hit the up arrow or the down arrow. Oh dear.

I was really aiming for mid/lowsec for now. Didn't know about the scanner probe differences, I think that most people suggest combat probes to scan for ship wrecks in nullsec to salvage them.

Can't use cloak yet since I can't afford the skill (can't afford salvaging either). Thanks for all the suggestions.

If you've looked on their FAQ or any of the actual serious posts, that;s exactly why they are against consoles (which are synonymous to the companies that make them).

Oh dear.

But Def, where else are you going to get cute cat gifs for your picture folder?

CCP Seagull

We want you to control the universe more and more.
Some history on the Fountain War, Alliance Tournament XI, Typhoon PLEX Relief
Rubicon launched, representing capsuleers getting technology that boosts space travel (mobile structures, Ascendancy implants, etc.)
Opportunities to make your own place in space.
There isn't a single Interbus POCO left in High-Sec
Brief overview of Titanomachy
Showing a 'documentary' of the events in B-R5RB (All stuff everyone knows, if you've followed it at all)
Joke about putting the documentary on the History Channel
EvE's birthday is coming next Tuesday (May 06, 2014)
Three new 'Gecko' Gurista's drones gifted to all subscribers next week
There'll be a way to unlock more of these (unclear)
Two expansions a year in the first decade.
Moving to 10 releases a year, about every 6 weeks to begin with.
Named after Greek Titans, starting with Kronos
Crius, Hyperion, Oceanus, Phoebe, Rhea, Tethys, Theia, Themis (names are not tied to the content)
More flexibility for rolling out changes.
"We can be more ambitious"
6 month releases make development more conservative on delivery
Smaller parts mean better focus, smaller chunks over less time
Still free, some big, some small.
Kronos will be big, because it was the 'Summer' expansion.
Habits and the way things work will have to change to accommodate this new model.

New Lead Game Designer
CCP Scarpia (Thanks /u/Alex_Leporiday)
[There is a lot of great artwork being shown I don't have time to capture]

'We haven't pushed EvE far enough'
I want a world filled with NPCs that react in a rational manner.
"I want you to be able to build and operate any structure in the game, at a location of your choosing without having to negotiate artificial barriers. I want every structure and asset in the game to be destructible."
Nothing is permanent, changes are persistent.
Want your changes to spark a butterfly effect.
Next expansion focuses on the bones of EvE, Industry

CCP NullArbor

Space battles in the news require builders.
~120,000 jobs submitted a day for 11 years.
Three pillars: Meaningful Choices, Risk & Reward, Discoverable & Accessible.
Reprocessing (decreased yield, new UI, all stuff that's been revealed in the dev blog)
Compression (instant compress, compression array for POS, no more blueprints, all stuff that's been revealed in the dev blog)
Manufacturing (more transparent, market group re-org, no more component damage, no more extra materials, all stuff that's been revealed in the dev blog)
~50,000 jobs submitted a day
Starbases (structures, removal of standings in hi-sec, no more remote blueprints, better arrays and reduced isk costs, all stuff that's been revealed in the dev blog)
~23,000 new locations (!!!)
Blueprints (no more extra materials, renaming values like ME and PE, percentage changes, all stuff that's been revealed in the dev blog)
Reduced copy times to encourage more BPC flow and building.
Slots in industry facilities being removed. Cost scaling per the dev blog.
Teams (just like the dev blog)
In progress footage of the Industry UI (in work, similar setup to the dev blogs tease)
Clicking a blueprint in the list sets the top of the UI to reflect the materials you have, the runs, the run time, the cost, etc. No more 'Fetch'.

CCP Seagull

Kronos update on June 3rd
Roadmap for the future
First, CCP Veritas with the foundations

CCP Veritas

"You ready to talk some math?"
Dogma: core gameplay system that does most of the math on your skills, ship, damage taken, etc.
Example walkthrough: EM Shield Compensation skill, and how the various modifiers get multiplied with each other in a completely spaghettified manner to give you your percentage.
Started over again.
Much more compartmentalized numbers, simpler calculations, better processing.
Still in QA (can't actually jump to a new system yet)
EvE Probe: Will allow you to run explosions, jumps, and simulate the graphics engine on your computer so you can see how well it shows up on your computer.
Allows faster feedback on how things look on various systems
'Thin clients' allow for server stress tests without mass player tests (1000 Rifters shooting rockets at one ship on Veritas' computer without issue)

CCP Seagull

Laying the foundation for EvE to go on forever.
Asked us last year to dream big.
Concept art
Want to take ship customization farther.
Prototype video (with dubstep!) of applying logos and paint stripes to a Tempest.
Been working on the systems to make it possible
Concept art of structures
Want the landscape of New Eden to have more stuff in it, and more to destroy
Industry is a foundation for what's next
Will be directing the same amount of work and reworking that went into Industry revamp into all structures: POS's, outposts, stations, etc.
Better Corporations and Alliances, revamping the role system, interface, organization, power distribution, management of assets, controlling group activities, etc.
After that, we can turn to Sovereignty and warfare revamp
A world where all parts of the cycle of creation and destruction should involve choice for everyone.
Player controlled Stargates after that
New space, new challenges, new mechanics
(Feed is on the fritz)
I missed the last few minutes, feed was down, but there's a picture of a ship coming through a stargate. Gorramit.
UPDATE: It was apparently just hype up to the eventual player built stargates we already know they're planning, per Seagull's Twitter (Thanks /u/cookiejarz)

CCP Hillmar

Ovation for the developers
Three 'EvE Online!' cheers
Having people yell 'Destroy!'
We take our products very seriously
We don't take ourselves very seriously
Shenanigan time

CCP Pocahontas (Thanks /u/Fragilityx)

CCP Devs fighting the jiujitsu champion
Revealing an octagon

I do have to say though, the Prospect is an amazing continuation of CCP's mining scam (intentionally or otherwise convincing people that mining is good).
