movements 1&2
movement 3
and yeah, the geddon is the guy who 'robbed' FA
I was talking about the first movement, which is the one you hear all the time as people don't seem to realize the second and third exist. Imagine the first movement played with the ferocity and wide dynamic range of the third movement - that's pretty much what I was talking about.

[1] Wasn't talking about matching the tempo. The 3rd movement has a consistent, steady march whereas many people interpret the first movement with lulls and semi-pauses. This causes the simple, smooth melody to drag, and it just sounds like someone practicing a section of a piece they have little confidence in. The first movement sounds way better played in perfect, unchanging time (apart from transitions). This dude feels me youtube.com/watch?v=O6txOvK-mAk .
The first movement is so often interpreted with an extremely low dynamic range, even in places where the tonality suggests explosive changes should be happening. This is the fault of the composer because it literally says on the sheet music that the range is restricted from mp to mf. If this movement didn't exist and I wrote it and played it for a music class as so many professionals interpret it, I would be given a poor grade or at the very least negative commentary for missing such obvious dynamic transitions. To let someone get away with it because "omg it's Beethoven who the fuck are you" or for historical accuracy or whatever is being disrespectful of the existing profession to hold a dead guy up on a pedestal. When Beethoven remarked about this movement "Surely I've written better things," he was definitely on the mark.
[2] A lot of people have this weird cult-like fascination with historical accuracy. I can definitely appreciate it because awareness of all the context surrounding a piece certainly increases one's enjoyment of it. But there are people who literally think that all the amazing and brilliant but very different interpretations of e.g. Rachmaninov should disappear and only one "correct" one should ever be heard. Even in modern music, some of the best songs are not originals but covers whose interpretations are superior to the original.

[1] I'm pretty sure this is a subjective matter. I personally love rubato, as long as it is within reason, of course. Yes a lot of people who overdo it when they play this piece, but eh, rightly done rubato is magical.
Dynamic range is once again a subjective matter. When I used to play it I definitely exaggerated the dynamic range to a certain degree, but I still respect what is written on the score. I don't feel anyone has the right to overly change the interpretation of a piece far beyond what is written on the score unless you are an accomplished concert performer, and even then you might anger the ~high class elitist music lovers~. Sure, for personal enjoyment and performance it's fine however.
[2] There are idiots in every field in the world. Horowitz had some of the most different yet fantastic interpretations of Rachmaninoff's concertos yet they are some of my favourite. So I completely agree with you here.
I'm not calling you an idiot or anything def just because you feel a particular movement should be interpreted differently. I just have a slightly different preference for that piece and think you're weird for your own preferences. :D
Actually, here's a critical question: what's your opinion on LangLang?
The whole point of music is for personal enjoyment. Those who forget that are doomed to argue about stupid things like Lang Lang. Know what I think of Lang Lang? I think 90% of everything is crap and that almost no one is above that rule. Some of it's good, some of it really isn't.
Rubato is great and very appropriate in lots of pieces, but it just doesn't make sense here. It makes the melody drag unnaturally. Imagine having never heard the piece before in your life and hearing one of those fiendish performers who do basically semi-pauses in the melody. You'd think they were struggling with fingering. You'd think maybe they're having a seizure of some kind. The melody completes itself in your mind. Your mind fills it in before you even know what's going on. Adding rubato is just trying to play with people's heads. It also doesn't fit with the rolling harmony. The harmony, being strung out as it is, sounds so perfect and clean when played straight through. It just doesn't make sense. If you give it a serious consideration, I'm sure you and 95% of people would agree with me.
This makes the Doril area substantially more annoying to find the good fights in.

Did the engineering skill vanish? Pretty sure I had it to V, but while I can still find several skills that (used to, apparently) need it, it isn't there anymore and the skills that needed it don't show it in the prerequesites anymore.
