I would post this in the Complete MMA thread but I think it deserves its own thread
http://www.mmarmy.com is a browser-based MMA manager game where you build up your camp/fighters and match them vs others.
You start with 3 recruits and a small sum of money, and you basically have to fight your way up just so you can afford better equipment.
Every action you can do (sparr, fight, recruit) can be done once every game month which translates into once every 12 hours (new month at 9 am/pm TL time) of real time. You can recruit 5 fighters before you have to start paying to get more (and it gets increasingly more expensive everytime you extend the limit).
With your initial fighters you have to pick a style for them, using whichever one seems to fit their starting skillset best (you start with 5 sparring points, get new one every game month, cant have more than 5 saved up). There's no official list of what styles use what skills since part of the game is finding that out.
Any given style will give you an advantage vs some styles, and a disadvantage vs others, again, there is no official list (although there's a couple of easy ones you'll find out really quick).
The more fights vs quality opponents you win the more your popularity will go up, the more you'll get paid, and the higher the quality of the leagues offering you contracts will become.
As far as I know you can have an unlimited amount of camps, I personally have 3 (I got addicted -.-).
Oh also, fighters retire but you are guaranteed at least 5 years with anyone you recruit. If anyone else plays, feel free to link up your camp(s) here: My first camp: Shooting Star - I wasted all my initial sparrs before finding out how the game worked (I recommend browsing the forum a lil) and had a pretty rough start with no really strong fighters ;/ Shiroyama is on a roll tho, from like 0-6 or 0-7 to 7-8.
My second (and much more succesful camp): All-In Gym Tyrone King is in the top 1000 =]! Damian Stevens is crushing as of late now that I figured out a few things about him. Too bad he's gettin old.
My 3rd team (cause getting new recruits and figuring out what to do with them is fun): Soju Factory 6-0 winstreak for Ricardo Rocha just ended
my camps seem to attract the biggest losers on the face on of the planet though, who are all a bunch of talentless hacks who couldn't win a fight to save their lives
The "sticky" links in the forum aren't quite informative and are hard to read since all the information is scattered around and not laid out as one big article.
Anyways I'm trying stuff around right now and I just got my first win. $900 reward!
Great find, haha i have one awesome recruit, and 2 shitty ass ones. It brought a smile to my face to see my good guy win with stomps, made me think of the Pride days.
UP, I started playing this game, I wish more people played, sometimes it sucks the amount of time you have to wait to fight because people are offline.
My fighters suck, I don't know what to do lol. My most "succesful" fighter is 2-2, the rest is 1-3, 0-4 and etc.
I had two other camps that did decent, but I just got lazy upkeeping them and i'm thinking of just dropping them altogether.
My only gripe right now is that I love Muay Thai in real life, so I really wanted to make a really dominant 8 points or Chop down fighter. But the guys I recruit keep getting grappling stats lol.
At least Tyrone King finally ended his loss streak (was ranked 200th then lost 4 straight, including one hilarious fight where the other guy spent 1.5 rounds getting hit nonstop then knocks King out after I miss two punches --). http://www.mmarmy.com/fighter_display.php?id=49886
It's frustrating that I'm absolutely 100% incapable of winning vs flying subs with King tho.. But at least he beats up on powerlocks quite well.
Do you get certain types of fighters depending on what nationality you pick for your camp , like more sambo guys if you pick russia , BJJ if you pick Brazil etc. ?
Frozen, i'm not so sure why my 2 FS guys are doing so well to tell you the truth haha. The other camp I was talking about, one of my other guys has identical stats to Fumio, but was 3/4. Fumio's probably just really good in one of those hidden attributes. All I know is to pump Bjj, flexibility, and balance I think.
Are you fighting people way above your weight class too? That can make a difference if there's identical stats. I'm also lucky in that 8 point fighters keep challenging me for some reason lol.
And im pretty sure items dont help, if you mean shorts and clothing stuff. Equipment helps a lot though.
Nah just fighting people in my weightclass (maybe I've accidently fought someone higher every once in a while), I guess I need more 8 pointers to fight me :D
Items makes your fighters popularity increase faster I think..
Also, I dunno if this is just chance but I know that my powerlock camp (japanese) keeps on getting powerlockers, my flying subs/pull guard camp (british) keeps getting jiu jitsu guys.. I dunno =]
Hey Froz, do you know the exact difference between FS and PG? I know both use BJJ and flex, not sure what else PG uses. And i also know they both suck against GnP, but not sure what PG specifically beats.
In my experience, pull guard rapes fast feet really, really, really hard.
I'm not 100% on the combo for it tho, something like JJ/Flex/reflex or JJ/Flex/Speed is what I think. My fast feet guy Tyrone King (who btw needs to stop giving me heart attacks everytime he fights by almost getting KOed by grapplers) has a splendit 0-4 record vs pull guard, and Louie Belanger is 1-4.
King 2-4 vs flying subs, Belanger 1-1 vs flying subs..
I honestly am not going to fight another pull guard or flying subs guy ever again unless it's for a belt or right to challenge for a belt. Although having high balance seems to help a little.
I feel ya, styles matchup sucks sometimes. The FS guy in my camp you saw just lost to some weak ass GnPer. The guy literally had only 1.5 stars for the ground part, yuck.
Round 1 Hiroyuki Yamaguchiya throws a cross that easily dodged by Ortega. The fighters circle each other. The fighters circle each other. A series of unanswered punches from Marcelo Ortega forces the ref to stop the action.
Marcelo Ortega wins by TKO (Ref Stoppage)
?????????? what happened to my guy? did he get dizzy from all the circling?
Yeah but NOTHING had happened in the fight, it's a retarded way to win/lose ;p They need to change the wording, like 'Blabla connects with a strong X and follows up with Y, the referee stops the fight as fighter B is unable to defend himself'.
The way they have it worded it sounds like the guy fell asleep on his feet, since nothing at all had happened and then he apparently refuses to defend himself vs a series of punches. I mean, outside of Bob Sapp vs Jan Nortje, how often do you see the ref stopping a fight due to punches when the fighters are still standing up?
Had a funny one like that too, round one was all my guy hitting the other, then round two I miss two strikes then it says 'Tyrone King (my guy) is out cold from a flurry of punches'. That was annoying
lol I love coming up with starcraft related tidbits
IE my now 3 camps are Proxy Fac, Hidden Expo and Hero Probe Also my players have nicknames like The Emperor, Spirit Toss, Gorrila Terran, and god of war
Would anyone be interested in a TLnet GP competition? it would just be a single elimination tournament for each weight class. perhaps all entrants sign into a one of the empty medium popularity orgs (cages or lord of the cage fit this description, don't they?) and each 12 hours they do one of their fights until the winners are determined.
This annoys me so much - http://www.mmarmy.com/showfight.php?fight=463272 My guy is 161 lbs, LW. The other guy is some 265 lbs heavy weight who he moved to LW, and I don't get any kind of warning that I'm accepting a fight vs someone weighing 100 pounds more than me.
Okay we might as well start the sign ups. If theres not enough interest in a weight class we'll just drop it. All of the TL MMArmy GPs will run at the same time. The winner takes home an mspainted belt from me.
Post (or alternatively PM me) the name , weight class and link to the fighters that you want to enter. Please note that we will probably be signing into an unpopular low org, so if you have someone in glory, efc or delirium, etc you might want to preserve their popularity and ranking. Plus it'd be unfair to sign your champions into the newb league here!
The format will be a single elimination bracket.
You are limited to one fighter per weight class and can only enter any given fighter once (ie, you can't enter your favorite fighter into two weight classes). You may sign up to more than one weight class.
I dont know if any of you still play this, but two of my guys just got their first belts in Glory today! Currently Im in the process of building up an army of Swing for the Fencers lol.
the only thing you control is the progression of your fighter's stats and their fighting style
You should use up all your sparring points before each fight. But its best to plan what style you want your recruit to have before you randomly start sparring everything.

congrats on taking the belt. i've been holding onto the glory MW belt a lot these days, though currently FrozenArbiter's fighter actually holds it because i have absolutely no means to beat PLs so i need to wait for someone to take it off him. http://mmarmy.com/fighter_display.php?id=63252 actually i was thinking of dropping aki kuga down to WW from MW so we might have some run ins sometime in the near future
make sure you change the URLs of your links to fighter_display.php rather than fighter_stats.php otherwise they won't be able to follow your links
You get money once you fight. The contract is the amount of money you win per fight, you get double the money if you win. You can either wait for a fight or challenge someone yourself.
On April 25 2008 12:20 PissedOffEmo wrote: so should i set it to 1?
k i signed a contract, now it says i have no money? wtf..i can see that they too 400 dollars, now im left with 100, do i just wait for a fight now?
you can set it to 1 if you want, or you could just leave it at 0 it doesnt make a difference.
click fight with your fighter and look for people who are green (meaning they havent fought yet) and have an asterisks (*) next to their name meaning their online and challenge them.
It's a good idea to look at each fighter's stats that you want to challenge and their record, to see what styles they use against what, which is especially important as in time you will come to figure out what stats are good for what styles and how the styles interact with each other.

Lol So Much Better, I like your camp name.
thanks. :D
ive had mixed results with swing for the fences. it seems to beat the living hell out of flying subs, and does ok against pullguard, but sometimes it pulls miracle wins against powerlocks while other times it drops to poorly built powerlockers. i have no idea how it interacts with the standup styles though.
i think i'm a little too into this game. all frozenarbiter and myself talk about on msn anymore is our fighters, how we plan to build them and what styles we should use against other fighters. hell sometimes he even baby sits my camps when i know i won't be able to fight with them
On April 25 2008 12:35 PissedOffEmo wrote: k thx, but where do i search fighters? i'm sure its not the search tab right because that only says first and last name
go to your fighter's page and click fight. it will show up with a list of all the fighters in the same organization as you in the same weight class.
a little tip would be to avoid all low popularity organisations except the .5 star ones, ring rage, GEC, leap, and jab n sprawl. the others are barren and void of all lifeforms where you will never be able to find anyone to fight

7 isnt much at all, i have a 245 pounder in Glory constantly fighting 270 pounders :/
So much, I'm doing Swing cuz I love their play by plays lol. I like seeing people getting KTFO rather than just "fighter sets in a triangle and fighter taps out". Personally I'm getting tired of style switching myself. You spend all this time figuring out what style a guy will throw at you, then he doesn't even accept your challenge. All my top fighters now are well rounded, but I think I'm just gonna make really powerful one dimensional fighters now and mass challenge everyone lol. They probably wont be cream of the crop fighters anymore, but I think I'll enjoy myself a lot more.

it will show up on your team's homepage where you'll be able to read the play by play.
you'll know when a fighter has fought when their green bar on your pages turns red

Depends, you cant drop too much in weight. Lets say if youre 190 and you try and fight 155, you might not make weight and lose the opportunity to fight for that month. But if you can make 170, then you have a good weight advantage.
He gets more spars everytime he can fight again. You basically fight two fights a day. For me, the game restarts at 7:00 in the morning and 5:00 at night everyday.
Well no, you can recruit people every 1.5 days for free. You do need to spend money though to increase the number of recruits your camp can have though. So in your case, I think your limit is 5 fighters in a camp, and then you'd spend money to increase that limit to 6 and so on. I think the upper limit is around 15 fighters or so, though I'm not sure.
Round 1 "Cant Cut Weight" throws a cross that easily dodged by Noboyuki Nawabe. The fighters circle each other. Nawabe connects with a strong right hook. Nawabe unleashes a flurry of punches ending with Len Wiltsie out cold from a right hook.
Noboyuki Nawabe wins by KO (Hook)
im noboyuki, top fighter of my 3 recruits haha
i have 1300 now, under the equipment tab, i can see a whole bunch of items that are 5000 dollars but it says "terrible" next to it, does anyone know why it says that?
pissedoff, go to the mma forums and look under general help, it might help you a lot in future questions. And no, the equipment is training equipment for when you spar. If you have better equipment, the amount of stars you can get from each sparring session is greater. And yes, recruits are all randomly assigned. Styles make a big difference too, you can beat someone with better stats if your styles match up well.
BTW SHIT!!! Good thing I won those fights today, my guy JUST RETIRED =(
No, sometimes someone who is clearly better will lose to someone worse which is frustrating (I'm talking same style vs same style here). Mostly it's good tho.
That's for same style tho, styles 100% make fights. Someone with just barely competent stats in fast feet will have a great shot at beating a complete monster power locker, and so on. At higher ranks it often becomes a 'I know he is going to pick X to counter my Y so I pick Z to counter X' and so on.
However, pretty much the first guy I recruited, Iwao "Evergreen" Kawasawa, apparently has superman aging stats, as he decided to become unstoppable around age 40 http://mmarmy.com/fighter_display.php?id=45386
He's now ranked 23rd overall and 4 (Edit: make that 5, time to move to the EFC) time Glory champ. Only problem is the MW division in Glory is really weak right now, a tough guy just retired and some others seem to have left. Considering trying for the WW title but that's a pretty big cut, or moving to EFC before he retires.
Yea, styles definitely matter a lot more than stats. My 3.25 brawling 2.5 boxing and 3 Power swing for the fencer just got first round owned by a 2 star boxing/reflex counterstriker :/
How involved is this game? I am thinking of starting but I would rather not waste a few hours figuring out that I have no idea what I am doing. My knowledge of actual mma is elementary, if that matters.
Well lemon, you can either get really into the game and try and figure out all the style matchups and try to build a well rounded fighter than can excel in a lot of different situations, or you can try and create a one style monster. The faq in the forums is actually quite helpful.
I made a new camp today and i was just wondering, if i havnt activated my account and started my fights already is something bad gonna happen? i havnt recieved it in my email yet but i'm still able to play so i'm curious if it really matters or not.

IIRC you have to activate it within 24 hours or it's gone.
Clothes (items) affect popularity (a tiny bit) supposedly, and not the outcome of matches.
I usually wait to sparr if someone has challenged me before I've sparred, check their stats/style and sparr if I need to.
think of it as punishment for not being able to make weight. otherwise you could continuously put out challenges every time you fail to make weight then there wouldnt be any point of having the weigh ins at all
we should rename this thread to the PissedOffEmo Questions about MMArmy thread

You heard that right. Secondary styles are coming on monday (this is for all accounts). So the big question is... what the hell does that mean?
It's pretty damn slick actually. You will have a primary style much like you do now, buuuuuut there is another style you get to choose. This secondary style is your fighters failsafe style. If your fighter is smart enough to realize he is at a disadvantage in the fight, he will swap to his backup style.
This is a unique addition (especially for title fights that go 5 rounds) that will open up some new strategies. The secondary style will not show up in the fighter records screen, so consider it your ace in the hole.
Does it always happen? No. Will always be succesful? Of course not. But your fighters are no longer committed to a style in a fight when they realize they are clearly going to lose badly.
Consider a new technique of baiting fighters with one style (as seen from the record screen) only to have the fighter switch to the secondary and dominate.
I'm quite excited about this monumental change. Enjoy it... on the 28th!
big new update coming, in case anyone wasn't aware of this or doesnt ever read the homepage (like me). Sounds like its just going to introduce a whole new factor of luck into the game, as if there wasnt enough luck involved. Who knows, all my top fighters are well versed in several styles that try to cover all bases so it will probably favor me. i guess we'll have to wait and see how it turns out
Hah, that's neat idea..i made two teams and retired 1 guy from each camp because they were 0-2...is it bad if i retired after losing alot? my best guy is 2-0
i think its a bad idea to retire people this early on in the game.
a. you need the money to build up your equipment, and even if theyre losing theyre still pulling a little in for you. b. you dont know whether theyre losing because youve picked bad styles for their stats, or theyre fighting bad matchups. they might end up being decent (or amazing) once you figure out how to manage them properly. c. having sparring partners helps. your next recruit might have similar stats to the guys you retired, and you might not be able to spar him as a result.
damn..sorta regret it now..anyway it says i can start recruiting in 0.5 days for my first camp..does that mean a new 3 will come out or just one at a time?
sweet one of my new recruits is 3-0 he's hella good, i felt a lot of lag right now and i found out they just had an update...are any of you guys gonna pay for it?
You don't exactly since unless you have another guy in that league, you can't check the level of competition. Just move up a level after you get 2-3 wins until you can't find people you can beat anymore Then move down/stay.
Generally you should avoid some of the leagues.. UFL is very empty, A-1 didn't use to be but I think it is now. LDnet pays very good (if you are looking to earn some money with a new camp this is the best org), Socat pays good too IIRC.
On April 28 2008 10:03 FrozenArbiter wrote: Wow I don't like the new design, much harder to read -_-
And no, not going to pay, it only gives you fun extras anyway as far as I know.
yeah but the new secondary style is awesome I was getting man handled in the first round and heading into the second but then out of nowhere bam, high kick and the guy is lights out also I heard you can get a penis sword tattoo if you pay
You start with 5 spots (but can only recruit 3 day 1), then you have to pay for more (more expensive each time). If you have just recruited your fifth guy, buy equipment (especially if you think you can make 5000 in 3 fights - with all your fighters combined that is). Since you have to wait 1.5 days between recruits, just try to time it so you can always recruit someone new until you have enough different skills to start sparring well, then you can go equipment for a bit.
