I have the same experience, where my team is the victim of my success, I might be 5/0/3 mid, with a hero like deadwood, but because we have a huge lead, everyone stops trying and we eventually lose.
I feel like to remedy this I have success with just commanding them to push towers and force teamfights, before their complacency and feeding catches up to them.
I find playing armchair general and team psychologist is the best way to get quick wins in the lower brackets, those players just don't know the roles of most heros.
My only problem is, I busted into 1800 once by playing solo and not with my buddies, but the MMR system keeps laying luck of the draw brown/orange players on your team, and ultimately, how much these player feed decides the game. Playing with my only mediocre buddies brings my MMR down, but at least I don't have to play with that 1543 wildcard pub who demands lego, rocks a 30 minute PK.

Glacius is quite a good mid, and Shaman can 1v1 or 1v2 easily.

Well fuck, this is the 3rd game i've lost today to shitty servers. First theres a mass d/c of 3 people on my team... >.> then all game i get absolutely horrid lag spikes all game. Now I d/c and can't login for like 10 minutes, login and then chat servers are down. goddamit.

The general idea in solo, lower tier (not super gosu level) games is to pick a hard carry and farm your way to victory. This often backfires with the high correlation between mental deficiency and low level HoN games. There is a school of thought that suggests "good support on any carry will get you the win" but that is also subject to having a "good carry"

Off topic; Solo Q'd and someone insta-picks arachna and refuses to go mid against hag. So i go as pr and somehow win mid verse hag (plague is gosu solo) and beat her to runes (that one i don't understand) - i was even kind enough to gank bot twice and kill their aluna both times..
But then this insta-picking arachna feeds their magebane 6 deaths; including one where the enemy ran through our ward of sight, we all pinged and typed "b" .. He doesn't "b", and about 30 seconds later gets ganked and then says "Oh, sorry, didn't see them coming.."

If you have low MMR, playing a carry every game until you get high enough to rely on people to play as a team is the better option. Trying to play a support or a side lane hero at low MMR makes it difficult for you to win. I would suggest knowing that you can carry before actually trying it though, so if you're new just play a ton of public games before going straight into Matchmaking.

Plague is actually a really great solo, there a better options for mid of course but plague has good capacity to win a lane. He keeps it pushed back with minimal effort and he has decent damage/animation with a way of applying pressure through his nuke.

He is an awesome solo i agree; his extinguish and nuke make for some easy farm/harass and lane control. But arach mid dominates in levels, harass, farm, everything.. I also kind of feel hag is one of the best mid heroes just because of her rune control. Anyway.. then the servers crashed-yippy
