To follow your point, imposter and impostor are two different words actually. I didn't know this either until recently. Impostor is the one that's conventionally used and heard. Imposter is something to do with taxes. =/

From what online dictionaries and wikipedia have told me, it looks like one is just an alternative way of spelling the other, do you have any sources on the difference in meaning?
