Don't get me wrong, the stick is still better, because it's more precise. Also 360 chars can obviously only be played properly on sticks.

Double tapping directional keys that is. Compared to tapping the actual stick.

You can double-tap a good stick (e.g. to dash) by literally just nudging it twice (by 1 cm or so) with your hand or thumb.

I don't know if double-tapping a keyboard is faster, but it can be done so fast on a joystick that there's no need to be able to do it faster, anyway.

I mean, when you can tap the stick fast enough to do something like this (at 1:00):

That's probably good enough.

If I went to a japanese arcade and won or got a baby win streak I hope the women surround me.

i find it very hard to do proper combos on the keybord... calcelling things into shoryuken is fucking hard, i always end up doing another thing like super ou ultra combo. Another thing is 720s, pretty hard too =S Anyone got any tips on these things? ^^

Instead of doing F D HP DF HP I just c.HP and SRK really quickly afterwards, because you can press the buttons really sloppily on a keyboard in SF4 compared to 3S on GGPO or w/e. And HCB is so much easier now, I couldn't even do it 100% of the time in 3s. Now, if you have the movement on WASD you can press D, S, A, release D, release S. Which doesn't translate as a half circle on a stick at all. Also don't play 720 characters on keyboard . Maybe you could on the SF4 input engine I haven't really gotten around to try it, but it was a frickin nightmare in 3s.

my only tip for performing combos on keyboard is "buy a stick or use a pad"
really though, I was never able to do 360s/720s (or even half circles) on a keyboard

I've heard of people mapping down left right up to asdf for 360's and 720's and what not. Seems hideously impractical however, but you can adjust to anything given enough practise like that.

Edit: The marn mago match is pretty depressing. I fully expected marn to sit on his life lead in the first round. 2nd round looks like mago had completely solved him.

in casuals, marn pulled off ken's hard trial #4 combo on daigo to win the 2nd round. it was a pretty close match, but daigo pulled off a super to win.

For keyboard execution, make sure your keyboard itself can handle reading multiple inputs at once properly. Sometimes it's not your execution as much as the hardware. Even if it works when you do a motion slowly, maybe that can be attributed to you letting go of keys in time so that others can be registered. Try a different keyboard or different button mapping and see if it helps.

When I use keyboard I use arrow keys for directions, but I just tried WASD for the first time in many years just for kicks. In emulated ST, I got a standing 360 motion first try (IIRC there's 4 frames pre-jump in ST). I seem to remember that I tried using WASD before on a different computer a long time ago, and it didn't work out so well then because that keyboard was locking up with those inputs.

Seriously, think about it: Joysticks are built for playing games, and these games were made to be played using joysticks. Keyboards are built for typing. Even if someone can play well on a keyboard, that doesn't make it the better input device.

Double Tapping a key for dashing is much faster and efficient on the keyboard than a stick IMO. I dunno about you, but I can press key two time in quick succession with my fingers way faster than having to move a huge joystick around, having to activate the microswitch on and off 2 times. It's just more efficient.
I hate the post below mine because it feels War3-ish.
