I get the dash upper only 50% of the time because the degree of separation of forward and down-forward is too small. It's frustrating when I'm trying to combo with dash upper, and a smash comes out. It's also a pretty useless move. The separation difference is totally different from the punch variation, which I can hit every time.
u can try doing u/f or b,f,b instead. either work.
the smash imo isnt useless. its his really only armor breaking move (other than overhead and TAP) and the ex version for some reason comes out faster. a wierd example is when u are midscreen vs sagat and u can try any other EX dash punch but they will always get stuffed by his s.RH. only ex smash i think works.
plus it doesnt happen alot but u can get exsmash into ultra. i did it only once in a match and tahts it.

Hey all.
I just started really getting into SF4 on XBL and I hate playing gief on the d-pad. I am looking to get a stick. I'm sure there is at least something in this thread about sticks but its too huge and I am lazy.
Available 360 sticks:
SF4 Standard Edition fightstick by madkatz ($79.99): Apparently it is just flat out defective with the company themselves confirming loose bolts and what not in construction and users reporting issues within hours/days/weeks. Anyone know if they have fixed this manufacturer problem? Or if it is still an issue.
SF4 Tournament Edition fightstick by madkatz ($149.99): All reviews point to good, but I am not interested in dropping 150 on something unless its going to be massively worth it. I really won't mind if enough people aside from SRK forums rapid 12 years olds can tell me its worth it, meaning that it improved their game AND makes the game exponentially more fun.
HORI Fighting Stick EX2 ($49.99-79.99): Generally good reviews, better than the madcatz rival at least. I am leaning toward this the most so far. It's older, so I was hoping someone had some decent experience with it.
Arcadeinabox.com (custom order) ($135.00-180.00): All good things here, it is custom after all, how can you miss. Problems do include insanely long turnaround and pricey, also not very fightingstick noob friendly...
Anyone have any recommendations or other sticks I'm over looking. I'd appreciate it! Thanks.

I've used 3 fight sticks with SF4 so far.
The first stick I tried was a TE. I didn't own it, but I invited over a couple of friends who had preordered TEs right when they were announced. The stick is great. It's stable, very responsive, slick, and with a lot of weight behind it. This is your top choice. I wished I ordered one.
The second was a Hori T5 10th Anniversary (PS2). I have an XFPS360 USB-to-PS2 adapter and a coworker sold me the T5 stick for $20. I bought it and tried it out, and it worked pretty well. Then the buttons started getting less and less responsive.
Then I heard SEs were in stock at Fry's, so I picked one up. It was pretty good, but I heard about the washer defects with the default stick. After about a week I noticed that one of the buttons was getting stuck. You're right, the stick has problems pretty much right out of the box. I ordered a replacement Sanwa stick and full array of Sanwa buttons and installed them (cost was around $65). The stick works fantastically, and is essentially just a smaller version of the TE since the TE comes with Sanwa parts stock.
If I had to do it again, I'd order a TE right away. It's far and away your best option, plus it's easily customizable (and so is the SE). The TE is essentially the last fightstick you will ever buy, it's that good. It also works out of the box with your PC, and many have modded theirs to be compatible with both PS3/360 via a switch. Some others have modded theirs to be wireless. There is a reason everyone says it's good, and that's because it is.

First run of SE MadCatz sticks were often defective, with a loose washer in the stick itself that caused all sorts of problems--scratching the stick pcb, creating short circuits on the fly, etc. I have one of those, but I replaced the parts with those found in the TE. The newer batch shouldn't have manufacturing issues, but the parts themselves are still worse than in the Hori EX2. The main feature of the SE stick is that you can swap out button and stick parts with just a screwdriver (so no messing around with PCBs, soldering, etc.). edit: and yeah, the buttons are terrible
TE MadCatz is generally just very good, and it has the same part swapping ability of the SE and much more. Hori RAP EX are almost as good, but they had a very limited run and are thus rare and exorbitantly priced.
HORI EX2 is well known. Not much to say. It's the de facto entry-level stick for a reason, both in quality and price. Be prepared for some soldering and more if a button breaks and you need to replace it.
For customs, there are many other reputable dealers as well. Note that boxes with parts costing in the lower end will be inferior to those in high-end retail sticks. You can also buy an empty stick box and parts and assemble one yourself for a reduced price.
One important consideration is how you want the stick and buttons to feel. Do you want clicky buttons? Buttons that activate as soon as you press them? Joystick with large engage? etc. Check this site, especially section #5, for info on different joystick types:
http://slagcoin.com/joystick.html kowal's site too
If you know that a loose stick with low resistance and far engage/throw is not for you, for example, it might not be worth getting a Madcatz TE or anything else with a Sanwa JLF joystick. You could buy the Madcatz SE and replacement parts to your liking for $120-130 instead.

Madcatz SF4 TE stick and Hori Real Arcade Pro (HRAP) 3 / EX are the only sticks I would recommend to anyone. The HRAP3 and HRAP EX are a bit cheaper than the TE stick because the buttons are lower quality, but it's easy to replace them with Sanwas. However, even after upgrading the buttons, the TE is still better due to its little perks, like the compartment for storing the cable.
So I would say, get a TE stick above all else if you can, or settle for an HRAP3 or HRAP EX if you don't want to wait for a TE.
(HRAP1 and HRAP2 are as good as HRAP3 / HRAP EX, however they're for PS2 so you'll need a good PS2-PS3 adapter as well.)
The Hori Tekken 5 stick (PS2) is actually quite good: much less expensive than an HRAP or TE stick (~$80 I think), and the stock parts are acceptable, even for high-level players. (The Devastation live stream showed Gootecks using a T5 stick at one point, though it might've been modded. Also, many of our best players have used an unmodded T5 without any trouble.)
HOWEVER, the T5 stick has all of its parts soldered to the PCB, whereas the HRAPs and TE stick (and even the SE stick) have the parts connected via "quick disconnects" which really are quick to remove and reattach. Anyone can replace the stick or buttons in an HRAP / TE / SE stick. But when your T5 starts dying on you after 2 years of use, you'll need to find someone with electronic soldering experience and all the necessary equipment in order to replace the stick and/or buttons.
If you don't mind all that trouble, then the T5 stick is a good purchase as well. Just make sure you get a good PS2-PS3 adapter along with it.
Aside from these 3 sticks -- TE, HRAP, and Hori T5 -- anything else is not worth buying, imo.
PS: oh yeah, custom sticks can be really good, too. As long as the maker is reputable, you should be fine.

It's worth noting here that they won't be available forever. Either this wave or the wave after this one will be the last in the production line. "They're limited edition for a reason" according to a friend of mine.

Yeah, Madcatz can't have too many TE sticks out there distorting its image. Not to mention how low the profit margin must be when they actually use good parts!

Yeah, it's one of the many variations of the reliable HRAP line...except this one is "se" meaning it uses SEimitsu parts rather than Sanwa or Hori parts. The Seimitsu LS-32(-01) stick has a little shorter throw and engage as well as somewhat greater stiffness compared to the Sanwa JLF found in other HRAPs. The Seimitsu buttons require slightly more pressure to depress and click more than Sanwas--you can rest your fingertips on Seimitsus without activating them, but you cannot on Sanwas.

I have xbox360 SF4 TE stick I wouldnt recommend anything other than this...

PC version leaked already. How the hell do the pirates do this? I suppose I'm going to DL it, I'll buy it on release anyways. Can't cause that much harm, right?

Well need to buy it to play online anyway.

There are about 5-6 360 TE sticks and 4-5 PS3 TE sticks at the Sunnyvale Fry's. Besides TE sticks, they have a ton of SE.

First off, thanks for the info guys. Leaning toward Hori EX2 or SE with sanwa but I'm not sure yet, have some other stuff in the works.
I do know about the HRAP, but because its actually more expensive than the TE and the they have about the same availability, I would just see TE as the default choice.
Going to do some shopping on japanese parts and I'll finally decide. Thanks again.
As far as I know madkatz will make both stick available to everyone. I was reading a review on amazon and I think and the guy brought up a good point. When you are buying an arcade stick you are paying for a box and labor, I definitely won't be paying anything more then MSRP. If you do then you really are getting ripped.

Just reminded myself what I was going to ask. Anyone know if PC and XBL will be able to link match each other? I don't think PS3 would, but with windows live being microsoft owned it wouldn't surprise me. I've heard both.
