Maybe I should just delete D4 to make space for Hots again on my harddrive. That'll show Blizzard :D You should do that. Give D4 some time to develop. Maybe in a year or two it becomes enjoyable.

Only downside is the playerbase has gotten small and queue times even for random QMs are high 2-3min as Supp/ Tank, 6+ mins as Damage.

Army control and size look pretty smooth and fun from these short videos. I like that so far. However, I feel like the visual clutter has increased immensely since the earlier footage and readability of the fights has really gone down because of it. Not a bad attempt, I'm finally getting a little hyped about the game, though only a little. Didn't look like it'd be ready for beta for another year though. It's a bit ironic that Zerospace might in fact come out earlier than Stormgate.

But dont they have their own game in development? Isn't that a conflict of interest?

They’re just skilled RTS players doing their thing, Scarlett especially has had a very good SC2 career, is pretty bloody good at BW May as well make use of their talents, and I mean I think the wider community is fervently hoping at least one of these games succeed. And really it probably benefits them both if they both succeed. Even people who love competitive RTS can burn out with basically only SC2 as any semi-modern success story. I should know having not played for years, if there was a couple I could bounce between I’d actually be more likely to stay playing them. It’s a ‘conflict of interest’ in the way me filling in once for a guitar player in another metal band was. Our scene needs good gigs, a better scene means more gigs for my band, filling that gap suits both of our needs, even if we’re ’rivals’ within it.

Then you should join CPL this season for BW while you wait for the next decent RTS

If I had time to learn the basics like a different FFE layout on every second map, I’d do so. I mean Blizzard fucked the easiiest money they could have possibly made from me with WC3 which I did play in such a manner and is probably my favourite game of all time

Maybe they could have struck a deal making it in the SC2 engine, saving a LOT of time? Are my expectations too high, or can these things be improved a lot before release?

Are my expectations too high, or can these things be improved a lot before release? I’m not sure you can do much better in terms of a base engine than SC2 for this specific kind of competitive-focused RTS Really ramp up the graphical fidelity and IMO visibility starts to suffer, and being able to quickly gauge what is on screen and make judgements from there is really damn critical. Also it is a bit prettier technically but I think the art style being consciously cartoony takes away from that a bit. Also given it’s a spiritual successor to classic Blizz games and Blizzard deliberately didn’t push the graphical envelope too much, and their games could run optimally on even lower end hardware, I mean I sort of expected as much. Physics I mean they look fine to me, what kind of things do you think are lacking? There’s definitely room for more complex physics in a more single player-oriented RTS, but I think in a game aiming to be what Stormgate is simplicity and predictability are the order of the day

Are my expectations too high, or can these things be improved a lot before release? Why do you think physics and graphics matter? Like a lot of life, how attractive something is only draws you to that thing in the first place. This is why we see studios cheat on their trailers to make their games look better than they actually do (Pretty easy to look up examples of Ubisoft doing this!). Sure, it's good for sales and makes sense to do, but dev resources are limited and I'd respect if Stormgate is putting resources more directly into 'actual game dev' than graphical polish at this point. With that said, I think your expectations are too high. Physics was a 'selling feature' in SC2's release because Blizzard had the dev budget to fit it in and it was a novel feature to sell as an improvement over its prequel. Physics itself has zero gameplay interaction and is purely aesthetic. While aesthetics do have value, -design- is where the efforts should be focused imo, as all of us RTS-heads are gonna care a fuckload more about readability and clarity in fights than we are ragdoll physics. Given that clarity and readability are design focuses, there's a limited amount you can do with typical 'graphical fidelity' with those design constraints. WC3 reforged is an excellent example - it simultaneously looks 'better' and like complete shit at the same time. There's room for the game to look better, but those are graphical DESIGN issues, which isn't something made easier by 13 years having passed.
