Even a fairly decent one in subgenre like cataclismo in tower defence got a decent launch and it's a full priced game. Another sign is there's hardly any content creator making any content for stormgate, outside the starcraft usual creators. Look at how many made Homeworld3, sins of solar Empire 2 beta etc even if they aren't RTS specific channels Idk, content is certainly an issue. The 6 missions in stormgate aren't exactly long (or that good). And the characters/lore aren't pulling anyone in to talk about that, so the only content you can really make is 1v1 stuff. It's a shame the numbers are so low but you can't exactly be surprised. The game is barebones even for an EA release. There's only 1 gamemode worth playing, no social features, terrible optimisation (you need a top 30% PC to realistically play). It was the same during the closed betas, after a few weeks numbers drop as people wait for the next version to release. Every content creator who played pretty much said "there's good and bad, the game needs a lot longer to cook".

I don’t think it’s necessarily catastrophic, nor do I think the now daily ‘look how low the player count is today!’ is particularly productive past a point. If you came from the campaign, and you’re a good RTS player, you’ve have that done in an afternoon thru evening session. Some are enjoying co-op, but it’s a limited roster and mission set so far. And that’s not factoring in performance issues which is blighting the mode, especially come late game. 1v1 still isn’t 100%, although it’s much further along. It’s got some pretty frustrating metas Of course player count is going to drop after a few weeks of being out there, it’s effectively a teaser at this stage. The more pertinent question is how many have dipped who don’t enjoy the game at its core, versus how many enjoyed that taster but have dipped until there’s more meat on the bones? I’m also curious why the Steam wish list count was orders of magnitude larger than the initial player counts. Perhaps this is always a pretty low conversion rate, it’s not a number I’ve really ever looked at with other games, so maybe this isn’t atypical at all

The peak concurrent player should have been very high given the wishlist. The hype died post KS, and you could already see the numbers in the open beta, far from what was expected. It's very different than most successful EA titles where the hype starts at the EA launch. all the content creators would try to catch the ride and word of mouth does its job. And going back to content, a lot of early access including cataclismo also has very limited content. And players have dropped to very low. But with that rating, it has all the chances to bounce back once there's a big content update. SG on the other hand is f2p with very expensive development cost, and a large number of core players would have backed on KS already, with this rating, has an insane uphill battle.

"Hm this game looks mildly interesting, I could possibly want to check it out at some point *press wishlist* ". Wishlist isn't about "I will buy this", its a 'hm mildly interesting'. My current steam wishlist has 100+ games on it. 80% of which I will most likely not end up buying.

I wonder when their most productive and proactive employees will start leaving? Mike Morhaime got outta dodge early ... So did Joel Blackburn from Bungie. To quote noted 20th Century philosopher Yogi Berra: "it gets late real early around here"

The game is probably like 20% finished when you factor in 3 campaigns and such. Add in unfavourable metas and it's not too surprising. Game needs to have a big content drop that people mostly like, and then we'll see what kind of traction they get.

All the scummy behaviour of FGS didnt exactly help, but that played only a minor role in the lack of players. Another indicator would have been reading about your game online (not discord and the sg reddit)

Personally if a game underwhelms me I just take it off the wishlist or I’m tortured with updates Equally I imagine many don’t frequently prune the wishlist

I'm happy if I can spend an hour or two a week gaming so I'll try out a game months after release if at all. With reviews like Stormgate's I'm never going to try it at all. The reality is that I'm the type of consumer they're targeting and we don't have the time to play tens of games to see what we like. They've had one shot and they're blowing it.

But this game is flawed in almost every aspect. Gamplay is meh, graphics are generic, sound is bad, faction design uninspired. And they need money from early access to get to a 1.0 release. The game will be closed down within 4 months.

To be honest I think the age of chat channels in game mattering is over. A game like Dota 2 has tons of way to chat outside the game. I have not seen it be used in a relevant way for years apart from chatting after the game in the game lobby. Over time it usually just devolves into spam and racism since nobody moderates it or gets ignored since Discord and other tools are just better.
