ONE PAGE MEMORY IS THE CHAMPION!
Check out my blog:
http://www.teamliquid.net/blog/wizard ______________________________________________________
Finals
[s][b]One Page Memory[s][b] VS. Sr18
3rd/4th place Match
chilfutz VS. jkillashark
Taken from my blog:
Hello,
3.5-2.5. 6 games. 6 epic battles. In the end, only one winner.
Congratulations to One Page Memory who defeated Sr18 in a narrow and tight series, with a final score of 3.5-2.5. He is the first TL chess champion: I sincerely wish him the best of luck in this next tournament, the TL Chess Championship.
However, with that in mind, we do have to realize that it all came down to game 6: and we all now, that it could be possible that if this was just another day, Sr18 would be in the same position as OPM. So to be honest, congratulations to both of them for showing they are currently (as we know) the best chess players on TL.
The final bracket for the TL Chess Tournament:
Finals
One Page Memory VS. Sr18 (3.5-2.5)
3rd/4th place Match
chilfutz VS. jkillashark
[losers final is to be played]
But with that in mind, will we find a better chess player, a person who can reach the top, someone who can defeat our current champion OPM? Well, I am proud to announce that the 2nd TL Chess Championships (as it is now called) is underway, in the round of 32 (single-elimination bracket). Good luck to all, and especially to the defending champion! The bracket is as follows:
RouND oF 32:
Sr18 VS. IH4t3z3rg NeverEndingStory VS. Schones_Chaos garoth VS. icafe.moto ChoboCup VS.Naib
UT-atma VS. Jkillashark Unforgiven_ve VS. I-Emerge 5HITCOMBO VS. Payt Victor VS. browny
JensOfSweden VS. samso. LegendaryDreams VS. Try One Page Memory VS. kdog3683 GarlicPepper VS. Byyk
GrandInquisitor VS. Ido Kraekkling VS. Quint RandomKo_Orean VS. Wizard Chiflutz VS. 123bangbang
One Page Memory/Sr18 have promised that they will post their games, and I will update this blog asap when that happens. Furthermore, I’ll update the losers final when that is played.
Thank you,
Wizard

^^ Lolz, this it the only way to spark interest. I added a summary + bolded/underlined some stuff.
Oh, and I just realized something: there is a 99% chance that some idiot will come strolling in here and say a combination of things about the cash prize such as and including stuff like 'he will never pay us', etc., etc....so for the record, AT THIS MOMENT, simply sign up, later on, I will probably arrange some sort of way to transfer the money to a PP account of some well-known person on here.
Thanks.

Created a list of players who have signed up.
For now sign me up. I keep my right to withdraw if I don't like the conditions.
Same as One Page Memory.
I would advice against a cash prize though. Cash prize tournaments have a tendency to lure out the computer assistance users amongst the chess players.
^^ Hm....well put it this way, if I get a large amount of people who would want to play WITHOUT a cash prize, I'll go with the flow and say no to that. But then again, how hard is it for me, or some other person I might ask to analyze the games to find computer assistance? Seeing as most players here are probably averege, with some above-averege (generalization of course) it would be blatantly obvious. For the time being, I'll let it stay, but who knows.
Oh and sorry for double post, but something useful to me would be for example, from both you Sr18 and One Page Memory, what would be conditions that you wouldn't like? (Well the money I understand from Sr18, anything else?). What would you like? I need a lot of feedback and suggestions.
Okay, guys one more thing, should I just take the first 16 names (that would easy :D: I'm a bit lazy hehe) or should I wait a while and then randomly pick names?
Edit: I've decided to do the first 16 names. Why? Well if all goes well, we might do another, so it's not like everybody has missed out on it. Plus, this way, we can start very quickly.

I'd like to play. I'll be free as long as you give me a notice beforehand.
Honestly, cash prize doesn't matter to me. All I really care about is for people to play, not just say that they will and disappear.
^^ Okay, that's fine. We only need 11 more players, so at this pace, we'll have the match-ups probably figured out in like 1-2 days. Most people don't really care about the prize anymore, so I might drop that: I'll still give it a thought. (for the time being, I will remove it).

Cash prizes only inspire people to cheat.
unfortunate I can't participate, due to other commitments in the next little bit.
gl organizing though.

Okay, so fine, it's settled: no cash prize. Is there anyway to change the topic title? (or maybe I will leave it there to attract attention lolz )), and thanks mikeymoo.

On July 23 2007 14:21 wizardpl wrote: So now, we have 16 players. I randomly assign opponents. Obviously, there would be 4 stages to the tournament: round of 16, quarterfinals, semi-finals, and finals. What I am wondering, is for example, in SC…typically they have a BO3 up to semi-finals, where they do BO5. But in chess, obviously, there are ties. What would you guys recommend?
Well, I´m not sure if you are familiar with chess tournaments. The large grandmaster tournaments are either (double) round robin style (everbody plays eachother twice, once with black and once with white) or elimination style. Each elimination round consists of several matches (2, 4, 6 etc. As long as both players have the same amount of games with the white pieces it´s ok) where a win is 1 point, a daw a half point. Should the score be tied after all the games have been played, a new series of games will start, but this time with a faster time control. If this series is tied again, a final series of games will start with even faster time controls. If this final series also ends up being tied, a single decisive match will be played where a draw will be considered a win for black and a loss for white. To compensate, the player with the white pieces gets more time on his clock (considering we are already in very fast time control, you could be thinking about 5 minutes for black and 6 minutes for white). Smaller tournaments generally don´t use a knockout formula, but it´s by no means impossible.
With regards to time controls, I would suggest something fast like 15 minutes each without an increment (15-0) with four games per round. For a tie, I would suggest to bring the time controls to 5-0 for the first extra series and 3-0 for the second. You could obviously opt for standard time but I highly doubt that all the players have 4 hours of free time for each game.
Well, I understand what you are saying. What I would for the time control is 15-0 (like you said). For the format, I'd really want to cut down on the number of games (of course, I want everybody to play, but that being said, I want to find a fine balance between time and games). 4 games does seem a good number, but in my opinion, if the games are tied, we should continue game 5,(etc.) with the 15-0. I understand the reason for lowering the time, but that being said, I have witnessed dramatic changes in the quality of play when you lower the time from 15 to 5, and for the most part, I don't want a tightly contested match at 3-2 to end up being won because someone blundered on time...
So...if nobody protests, we will have for each match-up:
- 15-0 time limit = 15 minutes per player, no increments after every move - 4 game series (1 point for win, 0.5 for draw) - If series is tied after 4, we continue playing additional games until one player wins regular 15-0 time limit. So instead of starting a whole new series with a different time control we keep on adding games with the same time control.
Everybody thank Sr18 for his contribution.
How many additional games do you suggest after the original series of 4 games ends up being tied? Just two games or another batch of four games? Remember that it has to be an even number of games so that both players get the same amount of games with the white pieces.
Add me to the list please! Thanks =] let's make every game a GG~

Oh..sorry, haha, I forgot about the fact that both of the players need to play white...so I'd say start with adding 2, and if it's still tied after that, play another 2, etc.

If there is by some chance 1 spot left, would any of you object to me filling it in? , I'd love to also play.

Okay, we have 16 players. Unfourtantly, the 10 above posters (above this post) will not be able to play as we have reached the limit. However, what I will do is place those players (in order based on post) in an 'extra' list, if, for some reason some player has to drop-out, etc. -> So for example, if a player drops-out right at this minute, the person who would substitute him/her would be Naib, etc.
Thanks. I will be making the bracket (I will randomly pair up opponents) and post it here as soon as possible.
Wizardpl
P.s. Thanks for the great support.

nAi.CyrAx, you had the option of playing on with your IRL board, stop making excuses. You play like 1000, say you won the NE Junior Championship(which, in your opinion, was not USCF rated), and you say that between 18 and 21, you lost your ability to play that well. Shutup. I play chess for fun, and on a good day I'm 1800 tops, and I dominated you without trying.

Okay, everybody who has an opponent in the quarterfinals may now being their games, so if the following players would like to start their quarterfinals series ahead of time, it's okay:
LeoTheLion VS. jkillashark 5HITCOMBO VS. chiflutz
Same rules/time regulation/series length applies as in Ro16.
That includes me and chiflutz, right?

Wtf, I made a mistake. Yeah, edited it out. -_- ^^You and chiflutz.

Okay, everybody, I'm going to have to say that today is the last day to send in your result If I don't get the result by today evening (6:00 pm MST), I'm going to subsitute the inactive players.
Thank you.
Chiflutz has some family things he has to attend to, so we're gonna play our games around Thursday when he gets back. When do we have until to play our quarterfinals?
Well, the round of 16 should be done by today/tommorow, so I'd say you have a few days. There are only 4 matches, so it shouldn't take that long.
I'm hoping we can have the finals before August 20th (so ~3 weeks) cause I have to fly over to Vancouver, can for a week. -_-

Okay, I have decided to make one last final extension for Sr18 and parascyhpe (or however you spell it, sorry ). Sr18 told me he would complete his games on either Monday or Tuesday (today). That being said, I sent him a PM and to his opponent, and have set a deadline for the results to be sent in/posted here at 3:00 PM MST August 1st (tommorow).
If I do not get the results, I will have to disqualify both players, and the replacement will be Naib VS. GarlicPepper.
Thank you.
The game is still scheduled for tonight. It's kinda hard to set up a good time though as there is a 9 hour time difference.
Scrap that. I've waited the entire night for him to come online as we agreed, but for some reason he never showed up. I'm tired and furious at the same time, a bad combination -_-,.

Was discussed already.
wizardpl, I think it would be unfair to DQ. Sr18, he's pretty active and posts on this topic all the time
Okay, everybody, sorry to keep you waiting, but we have officially ended the Round of 16. Paraschype (god I can never spell it without copy pasting) has PM'ed me (a few hours ago, I wasn't on) that he has forfeited his match to Sr18. He applogizes for the inconvenience to Sr18 and all the other players. Of course, since it are his games, this is fully allowable.
So, Sr18 VS. Paraschype = forfeit by Paraschype, Sr18 moves on to the Quarterfinals.
I would like to thank all players who participated in the tournament/championship, but who unfourtantly did not make it through, and 'special' kudos to oshibori_probe and Quint for being the only players who were not defeated in a straight 3-0 sweep.
On the other hand, congratulations to all players who did make it through, and good luck in your Quarterfinal matches.
Today is the beginning of all Quarterfinal matches if you have not started them yet, and once again, the matchups for the Quarterfinals will be as posted on the main page.
The Quarterfinal matches will be conducted in the same 4 game series as used in the Round of 16 (just for clarification).
Okay I updated the the main thread, and currently we are starting the Quarterfinals.
However, I am also wondering what you guys think about something: as of now, I am reserving one spot in the next tournament for the winner of this one ('defending champion'), and then have a bunch of players who signed up including me (lolz ). I'm thinking, should we only have one player be automatically entered as the defending champion, or should we have top 2, 3, or 4? I'm not sure what the right way to go about doing this would be.
Thanks, and someone reply.
Good to see this tournament is working well. But i guess, to support Sr18 , you should allow only players with a certain number of posts to play in this kind of event. It is always frustrating to see forfeits in tournament. Anyway, good luck to all
Boo, woulda loved to jump in if Parparparphsyche forfeit Ah well, there will be more of this it seems (gets hopes up)!
Why not make the next 1 a 32 person tourney considering there's @ least 25+ people interested.
On August 01 2007 11:10 Naib wrote:Boo, woulda loved to jump in if Parparparphsyche forfeit Ah well, there will be more of this it seems (gets hopes up)!
Lolz, don't get your hopes up, I think nobody wants to go inactive at this point
^^ Good idea to the guy above me.
Edit: Wtf is Parparparphsyche?? Haha, that's even worst then my spelling. -___-
Consider me signed up for the next tournement
Okay, I've added Schones_Chaos to the player list for the next tournament. (Sigh, 32 players = 16 matches in the first round T_T, I'm going to have fun with PM'ing all the people...)
Okay, I decided I'm going to let only the winner of the tournament be automatically entered into the next one. Sort of like a defending champion honour. -_- OR, we could have something like a huge bracket of 32 players, and the finalist (so the 'winner') would play the defending champion (so the bracket would be like a qualifier for the championship final).
What do you think guys?
I like it
^^ Kk, but, another question, should the defending champion only have to play a match at the end to defend his title, or should he have to play from the bottom up. I think the old idea is better, because he/she could get knocked out very early, or w/e...I don't know. I guess I'll stick with the original idea.
700th post! W00t!
I want to participate in the following tourney if possible, maybe we can get another reserve-draft or something.
Okay, so what we're going to do, since I want to make the next one a lot bigger and better.
We currently have 16 players in this tourney: the winner will have a spot reserved in the final of the next tournament. Simply said, the next tournament will have 32 players, in a similar format as this one, except that there will be additional round (the 'round of 32'). Once it is complete, the 'winner' of the bracket will face off against the defending champion of this tournament.
Since we have 16 players in this tournament, I think it'd be fair to say that we should allow the #2, #3, (so basically, the loser of the final, and the winner of the 3rd/4th place match) to be automatically qualified for the next tournament.
Then, that leaves us 30 spots. Right now we have 14 players for the next tournament, so we need 16 more. We will wait for more people to join, and if there are any spots left I will add players from this tournament based on their ending position/score.
Okay sent out PM's to all quarterfinalists, except 5hitcombo and chiflutz as they have posted here that they have a date arranged.
Thanks. Everybody has a few days to complete their matches. (half a week to a week)
How many games will be played to determine the winner. Like one math or 2 out of 3 or how many?
Well in this tournament and in the next (including round of 32), the round of 16 and quarterfinals are a 4 game series. It's like a best out of 3, but gives the opportunity for both players to play white. However at the same time, logic dictates that if it's an obvious win, then there is no need to keep on playing. The semi-finals and finals will most likely be a 6 game series, although I am considering 8 games for the finals.
Okay, guys, to all people in the quarterfinals, you guys have until August 7th to finish your games (Tuesday). Thanks.

Please sign me up for the next tournament. That is unless I get 3rd or above.
Okay, thanks for the results. Jkillashark, I'll put you in if you are defeated, for now, we will assume that you might take one of the reserved spots (same goes for any of the remaining players).
That means for the next tournament, we already have 26/32 players, 6 more!
Okay guys, here we are in the semifinals matches. Thank you to all who participated and had to exit before reaching this important stage of the competition. Truly, this is where it matters.
The two winners of the semi-finals will go on to play the final to win the title of TL Chess Champion. To those who don't make it, there is a last hope to regain their honor (lol); the 3rd place match.
We wish good luck to all 4 contestants who are in the semi-finals: Sr18, jkillashark, chilfutz, and One Page Memory.
[poll+question removed]
The semifinal matches will be played as a 6 game series.
Let the games begin!
4 more people needed for the next tournament!
Okay, so I updated the player list for the next tournament. I've decided that we will have a standard elimination bracket with [u[32[/u] players, with the 4 top players from this tournament (#1, #2, #3, #4) automatically qualified to play. Those 4 players will be our semi-finalists, Sr18, chilfutz, jkillashark, and One Page Memory.
Okay, guys, I need your semi-final games asap please, so please play them as soon as you can.
PMed chilfutz more than 2 days ago. Not a sign yet.
Okay well hopefully he will PM you back soon.
sign me up please
Well it's been a few days since I posted about the semis, let's make the deadline 5 days from now, August 15th!
Oh and we need 2 more people!
I am here and ready to play. Wanna play some blitz games Wizard[pl]?
sign me up
could some1 collect ELO of the players in the tournament? or i dunno how it is called in USA :D
my ELO is ~2100
It'd be too complicated, since a lot of players don't have an ELO rating. But I'll sign you up.
Sorry, it's been hectic. I'll play my games as quickly as possible.
No problem man, also, good luck.
[edit] Oh and only one more person needed for the tournament!
Oh and I noticed, happy bday jkillashark :D
We had an agreement with chiflutz to play tonight. I waited for an hour and PMed him - no responce.
sign me up and what are we using to play the games?
O rly? T_T, maybe the new KST messed one of you up! Haha, but seriously, um, I dunno. Just keep waiting I guess, maybe he'll PM you back. -_-;
On August 12 2007 07:11 garoth wrote: sign me up and what are we using to play the games?
Whatever you and your opponent decide to use. But preferably through mail, you have about a week to mail your move to your opponent. Kthxbye.
No but seriously, use whatever you and your opponent want to use: FICS, yahoo, playchess, ICC, etc.
Um, okay so we have 32/32 players, however if anybody still wants to sign up then they can as we have 4 spots occupied from the previous tournament -> hehe guys, not that I don't want you to play, but if there are other people who do well then..-_-you get the idea
One Page Memory VS. chiflutz - 4-0 for me. GG's
Good luck to the man who has to beat OPM.
That would be either Jkillashark or me, but we are having trouble scheduling our match. Jkillashark hasn't responded to my latest PM, which was sent several days ago :-(.
Wow, OPM, that's deadly. -_-;;;but after you schooling me in those matches we played the other day I was like woah chilfutz have better be pro;; (no offense to you chilfutz...but OPM is ridiculously good compared to me lol).
Okay, I put up the result.
Sr18, um,...thanks for letting me know, um, hopefully he'll respond soon enough.
Thanks.
It shows that you don't get my name since you put 'chobocup.'
If you're asian and seen robocop *raise your hand*.
I'm really salty that I wasn't around to sign up for the first tournament. I plan on a good showing for T2!
No offence to Jkillashark, but Sr18 I am training for you already, analyzing all our 3/0 games. You'd better come prepared for a good showdown.
I got a wicked idea, maybe haji can livereport this tournament?!

I am making this announce early in order to give you time to prepare : If anyone wants to play 3/0 or 5/0 games in 8 hours from now (thats 11 old TL.net time) - PM me.
I'm no good at blitz, I can't keep up with the timer without blundering .
so where can i get the program to play chess?
Wiz, I'm not pro, OPM and Sr18 are. Dunno about jkilla, but I'll most likely find out in the loser's final, huh. Chess live reports?
I used to play in an online tournament or two. What program or website do you guys use to play? Yahoo? ICC?
I'm wondering if anybody is interetsed in a live shoutcast/stream (w/e it's called) so that I or anybody else who wants could commentate on the final games. I'd also like to make the finals a set date so that people could come and observe. I'll update the main thread later, need to go now. -_-;;
Okay guys so the cut off date for the signups for next tournament are the second when I get the result from Sr18+Jkillshark (I'll have the bracket made by the time the finals take place).
Thanks.
OPM just devoured me, at the end it was kinda depressing :D I am looking forward towards the game between him and Sr18, it will be chess on a very high level.
GG's, some really close games, and some lost positions for me too.
hallo, im bored anyone up for a few games PM me
Hihi, hopefully we can get the semis done by tommorow, so that we can schedule the final to be played before the 18th cause I have to leave for vancouver T_T...then that can neatly fit so that the round of 32 (16 series') can be finished in 10 days for when I get back.
I can play the final on 18th/19th in the interval 18-24h new TL.net time.
Hello, this is a live report of Sr18 Vs. Jkillashark semifinal match. Game 1 is being played (and I couldn't find the game in the match list on FICS, so I came in late, so I won't bother live reporting this...), I'll update it when it's finished, and then start out with game 2.

Kf2 [goes to protect the unguarded pawn] Kg7

Qf3 [preparing attack while threat on Queen/exchange, 6 minutes left for each player] Qxf3+ 38. Kxf3 Kg5 39. Kg3 f5 [lots of movement, trying to exchange some pieces/open up position]

Wow what a game. Nice, I will actually upload the PGN, it's very interesting.
They will continue their series (game 4+) at a later time.
Current result:
Sr18 VS. Jkillashark (2-1)
Just played some blitz games with Sr18, and he taught me so much in between the moves, thanks once again.
Hopefully they can finish up their games soon, and we'll be into the finals -_-

JkillasharkVs.Sr18 (recap):
So far interesting games, game 1 there was a certain blunder (I can't remember :S) that pretty much gave away the game as far as I remember. Game 2 was nice once again, but I hadn't gotten used to the live reporting, hehe...Finally, game 3 I'd say was the best, very even position, apparently, draws were offered several times (as I hinted in the notation), with the position swaying between both players, constantly a switch of attack and defense, nicely played, in my opinion.
Here is game 3 (Sr18/Jkillashark 1-0):

Question for the players (don't have Fritz with this computer so I can't check that way and I only briefly scanned it) for game #3:
Why not 14... d5? The obvious 15. cxd5 exd5 16. Qxd5 just looks bad because of the sheer number of tempi black can get by attacking the queen and Bf4 move tricks don't seem to work because of black's pressure on the a file and the long diagonal. Then it seems that white misses 23... Ng3 (preventable probably by playing 22. Kh2), after which the white pawns are ruined, though the pawn ending should be even.
And in the king and pawn endgame: 42. Kg2 should hold the draw, as white will be able to trade the h pawn for the f pawn (after the eventually forced ...f4 exf4 exf4) if black gets too ambitious or just be able to head off the black king in time. Don't forget that white still has the passed h pawn, which means that black must keep an eye on it and as long as white can keep black from getting the protected passed pawn (key idea in this position), he should be fine.
Now glancing through game #2... (btw, the game notation is
1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bb5+ Bd7 4. Bxd7+ Qxd7 5. c4 e5 6. Nc3 Nc6 7. O-O Nf6 8. d3 Be7 9. Nd5 O-O 10. Be3 Nxd5 11. exd5 Nd4 12. Nxd4 cxd4 13. Bd2 f5 14. f3 b5 15. b4 bxc4 16. dxc4 Rac8 17. Rc1 Rc7 18. Re1 Rfc8 19. Qb3 Bf6 20. Rc2 Bh4 21. g3 Bf6 22. c5 dxc5 23. Rec1 Qd6 24. bxc5 Rxc5 25. Rxc5 Rxc5 26. Rxc5 Qxc5 27. d6+ Kf8 28. Qb8+ Kf7 29. Qc7+ for those who are too lazy to copy and paste by pieces)
Is there a reason why not 17... e4? It seems to give black a decent initiative and at the very least, cause some disorder in the white camp. The final combination seems to be very neat, but I'm not sure if it's entirely sound. ...c4 seems to also be a decent try to stop the dangerous discovered check (around move 23 and in a few variations), though I'm not sure if I'd be able to find taht idea over the board and I'd need to check it with the computer first, but the c pawn is doomed anyways. The plan is to gang up on the white d-pawn while white spends some time on capturing the c-pawn and if not capturing it, at least giving black some time slow down the d pawn by capturing with a rook rather than the c pawn.

Well we know how it is under time pressure, but thanks for the input/analysis.

is there a way to watch "chess replays" ?

No, not in real-time. Then again would you want to? I mean it is turn-based strategy lol
download PGN files into a chess viewer and you can go through the game, so I guess that's the equivalent

what i meant was take for instance jkillashark vs sr18, take that "replay" and load it somewhere and watch it.

Yup, there is a way, but the game must be uploaded in one of the most common formats, as for instance .pgn. All chess programs maintain the .pgn format. Then download the game and open with program you have. If you don't have any program (Fritz, Junior, Hydra, ChessBase, whatever) then download free ChesBase Light here: http://fritzserver.org/download/CBLightEnglishSetup.exe

1. After 14. ... d5 15. cxd5 exd5 16. Bf4 Qc1 17. Kh2, White is fine. Blacks queen is out of place and white still has both central pawns. You are right about Qxd5 not working (Bxh3 for example), but I am not sure what 14. ... d5 is supposed to achieve, other than being tactically sound.
2. You are right, 42. Kg2 forces the draw. There are still some ways for black to create play, but if white responds properly none of these should lead to anything other than a draw.
hey wizard, do u have any idea who has the highest ELO in the tourney? and personally, whats your ELO?

1. Well, there's always 16... Qb6 17. Qxb6 axb6 18. Bc7 Ra8 19. Bxb6 Bxb2 20. Rab1 Ba3 Though it's a bit of a long variation, most of the moves are forced, and the final position seems to be very equal. The main point is to gain a bit more space is all. The continuation in the game isn't bad, but I think black could use a little bit more space than what he got in the game.
2. How can black create more play? Shut down the queenside, prevent the black king from penetrating and know that black can't do anything because of the h-pawn and the trade of h for f pawns is a win for white. Seems like a fairly straightforward draw to me. Just keep the g3 square under wraps and white's good to go.

Heh, that's what I thought also, and I was going to ask if you'd mind sending your games over, keke
But of course, if you want to watch high level games, then you can pretty much watch live games on any server: I thought you meant something like watching the games in real-time after they are done. :S [edit] oh i see, if your going to be playing on FICS, then download BabasChess, it's pretty good, or Chessbase like OPM recommended, it's also good

On August 15 2007 21:33 Try wrote: hey wizard, do u have any idea who has the highest ELO in the tourney? and personally, whats your ELO?
I don't know 100%, but I can swear I saw someone mention (probably the player himeself) that OPM has 2200 ELO, and I think I know what I heard Sr18 say, but for the sake of not messing up stats/etc.., if he wants he can post it. I'd say I have an ELO rating around 1600-1700: not to be boasting or anything, but it seems that since I play mostly blitz games (as OPM and Sr18 probably noticed when the played me) I constantly blunder because of the time, while if I play something like 30-0 or 60-0 (which I have played quite a few of in the last few days) I'd say my ELO would be around 1900. Just guesses since I mostly play on guest accounts, but maybe I'll get the motivation later today to sign up for FICS
Thanks guys for all the comments, this tournament is doing great, so much active people (not only now, but there was only 1 forfeited game in the earlier rounds) so I'd just like to thank everybody so far for keeping this active and fun.
Thanks,
Wiz

? did you finish your games?
No, we are going to do that now, starting in 15 minutes from now.
Sr18 are you playing on FICS w/ same handle?
Okay, guys, live report of Sr18 vs. Jkillashark. Unfourtantly, they started already game 4, but I'll quickly copy the moves.
game 4: Sr18 (white) vs. Jkillashark (black)
1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6 3. Bd3 Nf6 4. c4 Nc6 5. a3 g5 6. Nxg5 Rg8
7. Nf3 Rxg2 [rook deep in White territory :S, balances out the material] 8. Nc3 [rook ignored] Nd4 [increased pressure on the kingside] 9. Nxd4 [exchange] cxd4 [must move the knight that was moved in move 7] 10. Qf3 [nice move, counterattacks the open rook] Rg7 [moves rook back] 11. Nd5 [attacks the black knight] Ng4 [somewhat 'uncomftorable' position, only guarded by the rook in the back] 12. Be2 [nice, allows for a sort of pin] e6 [opens up the bishop/queen]
(I'll be posting every 3 moves now)
13. Nf4 [takes it away from danger, 2 viable spots, to be honest, although this one is less safe then b4, it's more inside the action] Qh4 [increases the threat on f2 square] 14. Qg3 [looking for an exchange which would come out beneficial to white in terms of positioning, but he might still accept it] Qxg3 [yes he does, pawn retakes, opened rook, threatened knight] 15. hxg3 Nf6
16. d3 [lots of pressure on black, slow 'push' by white to contain him] Nd7 17. b4 Be7 18. Bb2 [threat on the open d4 pawn] Nf6? [I don't know what this is...he's allowing white to take the pawn and pretty much take over the center]
19. Kd2 [opening up the bottom row for the rooks, dosen't take the pawn] e5 [threat on knight, while protecting the d4 pawn] 20. Nh5 Nxh5 21. Rxh5 [instead of retaking pawn with bishop putting pressure on f7, takes it with the rook, and no real threat on the rook] Bg5+ [somewhat logical move] 22. Kc2 f5 23. Rah1 [double up] h6
24. f4 exf4 25. Bxd4! [threat on rook+pawn] Rf7 [moves it to safety] {both players with around 5 minutes of time left} 26. gxf4 Bxf4 27. Bf3 fxe4 28. Bxe4 [regains equality in material] Re7 29. Rf1 [good move, bishop left out in the open, g6 is unguarded for the check] Bg5
30. Bg6+ [unguarded g6 taken advantage off (see previous move)] Kd7 31. Rh2 Kc7 32. Bf6 Re6 33. Bxg5 hxg5 34. Rf7+ [really dangerous here] Kb8 [even if the ruse to move to a different square didn't work, Jkillashark's development is poor at the minute] 35. Bf5 Re8
{1.5 minutes left for each player} 36. Bxc8 Kxc8 37. Rhh7 a5 38. Rc7+ Kb8 39. Rxb7+ Kc8 40. Rbg7 axb4 41. axb4 Ra2+ 42. Kb3 Rd2 43. Kc3 Rg2 44. b5 g4 45. b6 Kb8 46. Rh4 g3 47. Rh3 Re3 48. Rh8+ Re8 49. Rxe8++ 1-0 (will post comments later on)
alright, so the current score is 3-1 in Sr18's favour, all he needs is one more win to seal the deal: can Jkillashark come back with 2 wins?

game 5 (current score, Sr18 vs. Jkillashark 3-1): Jkillashark (white), Sr18 (black)
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e6 3. Nf3 c5 4. d5 exd5 5. cxd5 d6 6. Nc3 a6 7. e4 b5 8. Bd3 g6 9. 0-0 Bg7 10. Bg5 h6 11. Bxf6 Qxf6 12. Re1 Nd7 13. Rb1 0-0
14. Qd2 Re8 15. Ne2 Bb7 16. Bc2 Re7
17. b4 [looking to open up the rook if exchanged] Rae8 [doubles up, knowing if white tries to exchange it will come out in his favor] 18. bxc5 Nxc5 19. Ng3 [building up defense on kingside] Qc3 [looking for the queen exchange] 20. Qxc3 [get's it] Bxc3 21. Re3 b4 [nice protection, another reason why not to exchange earlier] 22. a3 a5 23. axb4 axb4
24. Ne2 [looks for a different way to exchange, black will most likely pull back] Ba6! [nice idea, on second thought pulling back wouldn't be the best option] 25. Nxc3 bxc3 26. Rb6 [double threat!

24. Ne2 [looks for a different way to exchange, black will most likely pull back] Ba6! [nice idea, on second thought pulling back wouldn't be the best option] 25. Nxc3 bxc3 26. Rb6 [double threat!, black will lose some material here no matter what, but I must say if black can think of some sort of penetration, white's king is in trouble, as he has no way out] Bb7 27. Nd4 [black has two pawns at risk, let's see how he responds next move] Ra8 [exactly what I meant, checkmate in 1 move, but of course, it's basic to avoid] 28. f3 [of course] Ra1+ [attacks anyways] 29. Kf2 Ra2[keeps on adding pressure] 30. Kg3 [very vulnerable position] Bxd5
31. Rxc3 [finally takes the pawn, but that simply evens out the material advantage (see last move), right now white is in a somewhat better situation postionally] Bxe4 [good idea, now there will be two black rooks in enemy territory] 32. fxe4 [white gains material advantage] Rxe4 33. Rxd6 [two points material advantage!] Re5 34. Rc6 Rg5+ 35. Kf4 [if white can hold onto the advantage, I think he'll be able to win this one] Ra5 36. Nf3 [attacks the rook] Ne6+ 37. Rxe6 Rgf5+ 38. Sr18 WINS! 3.5-1.5!
Gg to both players, a fantastic series, with Sr18 coming out on top in what I would say was a very close game. Gg to Jkillashark for being a great opponent.
I look forward to the finals, with Sr18 and One Page Memory battling it out for the title of champion.

DRAW! Blargh.
Sr18 wins 3.5-1.5 against me. Loser's final here I come!
Well, gg. It was a nice series, closest one so far. -__-;;
im trying to follow your notation but i think you're missing some spots t_t. Can you upload the pgn file?
I believe I made one mistake, and I'm editing it out. I'm fairly certain it's correct, as after the game, I went over the game with Sr18 and I followed the notation, and it came our correctly.
[edit] damn, can't remember now: well, if some place near the end, I wrote down K (king) instead of N (knight).
I don't have the PGN file for this, sorry.

wizard lets play 10min game rgiht now? o_o gogo?

The move list is faulty on two occasions.
1. Move 36 for black should be Ne6+ and not Re6+. 2. Move 40 for white should be Nd4 and not Kd4.

One Page Memory and me have arranged a date and time for the upcoming finals. The games will start on next sunday 17:00 new TL time.
Wait so do you mean this Sunday (19th) or the next sunday (26th)?
Ugh, that's like 2 in the morning.
On August 17 2007 05:02 Wizard[pl] wrote: Ugh, that's like 2 in the morning. Wizard, if you're from Poland, as your profile states, it can't be 2 in the morning when its 11 AM here in Bulgaria
Yup, I must thank Sr18 for understanding. It will be this Sunday (19) in 17 h new TL.net time on playchess. Most probably we will be in children's room, but details will be given short before match, so if anyone wants to watch - stay tuned.
^^ Haha, well I guess I should update that, because right now I'm in Canada for a few months under the timezone MST (mountain standard time, which is currenly -6 GMT, while KST is +9 GMT).
So I guess I won't be able to watch, but that's okay, after all, it is your series.
Just want to remind everybody that the finals are taking place in two days.
Also, check out my blog for two interesting articles I've written up, both on the 'The Halloween Gambit'. The first part is a guide, while in the second part I show some games in which I play this gambit (and win of course).

Oh and of course, finish the 3rd/4th place match!
After huge problems (last night Sr18(couldn't resist ) some evil people cut the internet wires so I have no ineternet at home) I am here, and ready to play the final. We will play on the playchess server in the children's room
Then let us get the games underway. Bo6 right?
Oh, if you want to, I guess I have no other choice.
Good games. I have no idea how many games we were supposed to play, and I guess we played too many. I think you have won, but by how much will depend on how many games we should have played. GGs.
3,5-2,5 for me GGs Later if you don't mind I will post the games to discuss them.
So it was 6 games after all? Feel free to post the games for analysis.
Congrats.
Wow, nice guys, must have been close -_-;;
FINAL: One Page Memory>Sr18 (3.5-2.5)
THE CHAMPION: ONE PAGE MEMORY!
Gg to both participants.

First thoughts: At the end one blunder in game 6 decided the match. I can't remember in near past someone to have beaten me so convincigly as Sr18 in game 5. About game 3 - that's the risk to play not very well known opening, but in our 3/0 games Sr18 beat me with ease in French, so I prepared new opening. Game 4 - Stalemate!
EDIT: Here are all 9 games with Sr18 (we played 3 additional games) in .pgn format, viewable with all chess programs. http://download.yousendit.com/97E7CC326DF1CB2B
