And it looks exactly that way Same here really, I played a bit of LAN in D1 and D2 but haven't touched any other multiplayer features. For me arpgs were always more of a solo experience and even though I've had a lot of friends who also played them we each went about it solo. I couldn't really give a damn about rankings in such games, pvp could potentially be fun but I think there are better games designed specifically with that in mind (like Bloodline Champions used to be for example).

Haha shit, this sounds like exactly my childhood. It's a shame how far Blizzard has fallen, sure there's a bias posting about this on TeamLiquid where we are going to get more "Blizzard children" but they really did capture the zeitgeist for a while there.

One of the big draws of Diablo was that we could take our PCs, go to a remote cabin and have fun weekend just drinking beers, playing diablo etc. without the need for internet.

That cabin has an internet connection in 2022, you can still play together in a game and put your phones away/computers off when you're drinking. 'It used to be more fun when there was less to do' isn't really an argument imo. You very well know that there is a huge difference in having a LAN (or any activity) where internet is available compared to without internet. People are much more disconnected with internet available and will just surf on phones/PC. You can argue about positives and negatives of both options but you can't say there is no difference. Maybe in theory, but in reality people won't put their phones away.

Not even an hour's drive from the city but there's virtually no internet (9kb/s is the most you can get even with LTE modems) due to it being within a scenery/wildlife preserve and having so many trees and lakes around. We used to have LAN parties there but nowadays we mostly just do board games with bbq and beer since there are so few games that actually support offline play or have hot seat modes, which is a pity. I remember countless hours of playing D1, D2, Quake, HoMM2 and 3, CMR 2.0, BW, WC3 and DotA this way. Funnily enough, games nowadays have many more multiplayer features but are much less social. Ever since LAN/Hotseat options started disappearing from games we've grown further apart with friends.

This was the charm of the past, all you needed was ethernet cables and a switch and you could basically play D1, D2, WC3, Quake, Unreal Tournament etc. in lan mode with friends and with no lag. It was quite simpelt and so much fun

when all your friends cant afford or werent allowed to have a legit copy, lan was what brought popularity to those games. its also the piracy that i assume ultimately was the reason why companies no longer support it

There was an option for full install on one and minimal install on the other who'd need the CD to be running. The days when Blizzard was ahead of the curve and knew exactly what players actually wanted...
