Diablo II was great but totally missed the depth of those games while multiplayer and addiction made up for it in different ways ![]() Ocarina of time is insanely brilliant as well but Im limiting myself to consoles but it missed a certain amount of depth imho.

Just need a multiplayer version for the singleplayer and it'll beat D2 by miles. ![]() I do like D2. It's very good but Fallout 2 is great. Man, I have a feeling the MMORPG version will suck. My Top Pick Chrono Trigger The music, music, combo techs, story, multiple endings, cool characters, the whole time aspect, so many good things about this game. Honorable Mentions Super Mario RPG (hehe mario in an rpg what a ridiculous concept) Planescape: Torment (If I ever get around to finishing the game it may very well become my top pick)

Doesn't anyone here play rogue-like games? Or ANY classic rpg games? Fallout and Baldur's Gate 2 were awesome, but even the oldies are better than any of the newer rpgs like diablo2. What's so fun about diablo2? The first diablo was cooler because of random dungeon and quest generation, so every time you start over it's a whole new game. You don't get that out of oblivion or neverwinter nights. Still, even the first Diablo is nowhere near one of my favorites because there are so many better games out there. Yeah, graphics are way better now, but what about gameplay? My top 5: 1.) Ultima VII - A big, detailed world where fun, creative quests are around every corner, and you're never forced to play through a linear storyline. This is the king of RPG games where you are free to do so many things, from dungeon crawling, to sailing to mysterious islands; from fishing, to blacksmithing. It's very freeform gameplay. If you have the original game data (expansion optional) a team wrote a free engine that works on newer systems. http://exult.sourceforge.net/ Oh, and by the way, Ultima IV and VI were also great games, but they're older style where you have to type out many of the commands (even for little things like 'open door'). I don't think many people here would like that. 2.) Fallout // Fallout 2 - What an immersive game! A post-apocalyptic setting, not where you play a hero or some other kind of terribly skilled and powerful person, but someone that just wants to survive. Explore a world full of mutants, thieves, and others trying to take advantage of you, with dungeons riddles with both bad guys and animals affected by the nuclear fallout of the last war. The rpg system behind fallout is cool, you have your stats, of course, and also special abilities, iirc each comes with some downside as well. You run around the world in real time, but when you enter combat it turns into a turn-based game, which may sound boring but is pretty cool and fits well with the overall game. It requires patience yes, and if you are patient it'll be rewarding, take your time, with one skill you can actually aim for specific body parts no matter what npc you're up against, aim for the nuts or the head, both would cause different damage points, and both have different chances of landing. Lots of other skills add to the game in several ways, it's not just bonuses to attacks and resistances -- whole new game implementations come with some skills and also stats (with higher charisma, for example, you get more choices in dialogue with npcs). Gameplay reminds me somewhat of Ultima VII because it's pretty freeform and there are lots of fun quests to do. Game info and screenshots: http://www.mobygames.com/game/fallout/ 3.) NetHack and other rogue-like games - The first thing you're going to think to yourself, just like I did, is "this game looks like shit". It's true, they all look like shit! But where these games lack graphics, they make up in gameplay and depth. Think Diablo2, take away the nice graphics, add about a hundred more things you can do, each with its own importance, randomly generated dungeons, randomly generated items, randomly generated random generation, random random random. What's so great about random? You get a whole new game experience every time you start over. That red potion you drank last game that saved your life could poison you next game. Each and every level looks different every time you start over. Most rogue-like games start very simply, you're in a dungeon, there are a bunch of levels, your goal is simply to get down to the lowest level, beat the boss, and win. Sounds easy but many people have never beaten the game even once. It's a hard rpg genre where emphasis is on survival by any means (oh, and there are many means) and the goal is always completion. Gaining levels and looking for phat lewts isn't going to save your ass. There's a good reason why these games are still so popular, despite the crappy ascii graphics, you just need to give them a fair chance, like I did. Game info and downloads: http://www.nethack.org/ http://www.thangorodrim.net/ (Zangband, linked in thangorodrim, is another popular rogue-like, but following the silmarillion story of Angband by J.R.R. Tolkien, so you might feel more comfortable playing that as an RPG) http://doom.chaosforge.org/ <--a DOOM rogue-like! Don't like fantasy? Replace the swords and magic with shotguns. 4.) The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall - This, in my opinion, is the king of first-person rpgs. Again, it's old and the graphics aren't spectacular, though it was good looking for its time. The game world. I don't think any RPG is capable of reproducing the size of this fucker. Literally the size of Great Britain, though you'd be crazy to actually walk from place to place. Everything except the items available, cities and special landmarks is randomly generated. Again with the random generation -- yes, I love it. What does this mean in Daggerfall that makes it special? The DUNGEONS are randomly generated, too! Since they're 3d, it's pretty incredible and no other game has yet to make randomly generated 3d dungeons. That's right. Make your character, there are so many variations, each time you start over it's a whole new game. I personally liked playing a sword mage - they're very powerful and you get both the best weapons and spells to use. Dungeon crawls are so fun, a one man army tearing the place up. The game is so freeform, make your own spells, combining different effects, customize your equipment with enchantments, buy houses and boats, get involved in world politics and change your status, get simple to epic quests (many quests also being randomly generated)... Wikipedia says it best: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Elder_Scrolls_II:_Daggerfall The key feature of Daggerfall as in all The Elder Scrolls games is the freedom the game offers to players. Players are free to play the game in any style, from an honorable knight to an evil assassin. Players are also free to stray from the main quest at anytime and can choose not to do it at all. Daggerfall is the largest Elder Scrolls game to date, featuring a game world estimated as being 161,600 square Kilometres (63,125 square miles) — roughly twice the size of Great Britain — with over 15,000 towns, cities, villages, and dungeons for the player's character to explore. Yeah. Cool thing is there's a Windows XP patch now, so you can enjoy it even now, but it can still be buggy. 5.) Might and Magic VI - A beautifully designed game with a feeling like Daggerfall, except the world is static, no random content, but it makes up for it with its challenging game world (both on your wits and your patience). In this game you have a party, no one man army, npc interaction takes a bigger role, combat is more tactical and fast-paced than Daggerfall. It's a tough rpg with hundreds of hours of gameplay. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Might_and_Magic_VI:_The_Mandate_of_Heaven I'm not mentioning Planescape: Torment because I think of it more of an interactive story than an RPG game. It's a great story and cool npc interaction, but I can't say it's one of my top 5 games. Baldur's Gate 2 is trully a masterpiece. I recommend it because the first time you play through it - wow - it's an epic quest with fun gameplay (D&D 2.0 rules) and many, many hours of sitting at your chair, looking at the screen, stuck in that fun little world. It's beautifully designed, but... it's too linear, you will never get the same immersive experience again. I wish Black Isle still made games ![]() edit: Oh I hear Gothic 2 was a great rpg game. Might want to check that out. WarCraft 3 is not an RPG... I played through the single player and yeah it feels like one but still, it's a mix with RTS, so you can't really call it an RPG. Another example - the heroes of might and magic series of games, they're rpg/turn-based strategy, but would you call them rpg games? No.

Baldur's gate 2 Fallout 2 For console: Final Fantasy Series Chrono series. EDIT: Diablo isn't a true rpg, it's just hack and slash. WC3 has more role playing elements then Diablo and could be easily considered an rpg with some rts game play.

Thanks for the links ![]() I tried netHack but i think it is very too hard ( you cant save if i remember so i think only hardcore players can like this kind of game). Btw i m wondering if some people think like me that diablo is nearly closer to Hack'n Slash than rpg ? You're welcome! In Nethack and most other roguelike games you save if you exit, and you continue when you come back, BUT you can't save during the game, then load it when you die. Most people prefer it that way. Yes it's very hard and very challenging, you only get one life, but I don't think it's such a bad thing since it's no big deal starting over - you learn and still have fun. As for Diablo... well it is hack'n'slash, so is nethack and roguelikes - they're rpg/action games. The thing is in rpg games the line between rpg and action has been blurred from the start. If you want a pure rpg game you'd probably want to play a pencil and paper dungeons and dragons game ![]() The difference in diablo's hack'n'slash style is that it's all in real time, you walk through a dungeon and click your mouse twice, kill something, keep going until you kill more shit, while in rpgs like baldur's gate and nethack it's turn-based. So yeah just depends how you like it, I personally prefer turn-based since those games generally have more depth to them. You can stop and think about what you want to do and it just makes it more fun since the game pretty much makes you think in more difficult settings. While in Diablo and Diablo2 style of gameplay it's more about action and less about tactics, you just slash through shit without thinking, the most you have to remember to do is drink a fucking potion. Not meant to flame Diablo just speaking the truth, I know many would find turn-based gameplay boring. I think that's why some people might not think of diablo as a real rpg, but it is, you're still a hero fighting monsters through dungeons, it's just done differently by blizzard, and that's why it got so popular.

Generic storyline, bad voice acting, sub par minigames and lousy 99 floor dungeons as a way to add content -_-. Decent music though. I think these are probably the best for their generation of games: CT -> FF7 -> FFX most rpgs don't even add much or any content when the game is over i mean the game already had alot of content to start with... if it adds anything I don't understand what u are complaining about. I thought the story was great. yes the voice acting was bad... but if ur playing an rpg for the voice acting ur a weird guy and the battle system was fucking amazing.. shouldn't that be the number one concern when choosing a game, anyways?

Even if it shares the same universe and engine with Baldur's gate ( ubergreat game ) i think the storyline is very weak and it turns in a diablo like which is very sad because the ADD rules + Baldur's Gate engine arent good for hack'n slash imo. I had huge expectations for this game but i was a bit disapointed ( I finished icewindale but i didnt play to icewind dale 2). For Baldur's gate lovers, there is a mod which allows you to play Baldur's Gate 1 with Baldur's Gate 2 improved engine, higher levels new classes and so on but i dont remember its name T-T. edit: @zeto i understand your point of view ![]()

Other than that, I have to say the first Baldurs Gate. The second one is good too but I feel too much like a kid in a candy store when playing it, running around and trying to get all cool items. The first one has a better storyline which gives a better sense of adventure and it feels more serious.

For PC I'd pick Baldur's Gate Shadows of Amn and Plancescape Torment.. the latter havin such a funny/deep storyline that it has even been turned into a book (one commerce and another one fan based.. the fan based is of course better). Planescape unfortunately lacks a bit in gameplay, but if you like lengthy novel-like games, you won't be disappointed. Haven't played Fallout nor 2 which has been named quite a few times already.. maybe I should check up on that one.

Might & Magic 4/5, 6 and 7 Baldurs Gate series Neverwinter Nights 2 (and maybe the second expansion of 1) For consoles: Chrono Trigger (SNES) Final Fantasy 5 and 6 (SNES), 7/8/9 (PSX) and maybe 12 (PS2) Star Ocean 2 (PSX) and Star Ocean 3 (PS2). Not that these games are good for entirely different reasons. The Might and Magic series for instance sported a very bland and uninteresting story but had a large gameworld with freeform gaming. The Final Fantasy series sport very little freedom but generally have a well though out story with interesting characters and well written dialogues. The Star Ocean series have by far the best fighting and character developing-system and a great post-game to boot. The bioware games have a very detailed gameworld that will present you with a lot of difficult decision making. As such, it's hard to really determine which game is "the best" as they are essentially games from different categories.

I think most people here missed out on the truly great RPG games from the SNES era and were spoiled by the PSX with games like FF7 and FF8 and such (mostly because a lot of people here are still pretty young). In my opinion, no game from the PSX or after can hope to qualify for the best RPG of all time. SNES was where it was at.

QTF I remember staying up for 48 hours straight playing Seiken Densetsu 3(Secret of Mana 2) on SNES. Awesome game play, and its a multiplayer action RPG on the console. FF5 and 6 were also very good for their time. However, the "Best RPG of all Time" title has to go to Final Fantasy tactics for me (Super Robot Wars a close second). Awesome tactical RPG with difficulty and plenty of character customization. Plus, it actually has a decent storyline. Fantastic game.

And about Lufia 2, although it is an amazing game (with some surprisingly challenging puzzles at times), surprisingly not that many people seem to know about/have played it that I come across. I wonder why that is? I'm always really surprised to see FF7 and FF8 on people's lists. I personally thought FF8 was pretty bad, kind of like FF7 but less original and less interesting. FF7 was a good game, but I think that so much of it's hype and what it's remembered for was that it was the first real RPG of the new generation back then, and it brought about a lot of new concepts, one of which being better graphics (which so many people seem to mistake for quality gameplay). I don't think in terms of actual storyline or gameplay though that it was anything too special or intriguing. I never had the feeling of going back and playing it twice, whereas there were countless SNES RPG's that I would play over and over again, and still sometimes do. But I guess everyone has their own opinions, I just personally think there are a lot of good games that people missed out on when I hear FF7 and such being praised so highly.

FF8 has a good story too but the story telling technique is gets overly ambitious plus the draw battle system is boring and repetitive. The later FF series are just meh because nothing gets crazier or more powerful than a time travelling magically powered villain destroying the fabric of time and space. World destruction was already powerful enough with meteor in FF7. So they came up with Ultimecia and dump her in FF8. All the later villains of the series were then sucky but they had to come up with something original hence the silly ambiguous endings. Every FF series have few things lacking preventing it from gaining a good all round high score in my book except for FF7. This does not include FFXI(MMO) and FFXII(not yet played). LOL @ Mindcrime's post. True. True.
