Well, what I need to be doing is (say on a right turn):
dw+shift aw d+shift aw d+shift aw w
What I have been doing while practicing (again on a right turn):
dw+shift aw dw+shift aw
and at this point I end up in a wall because I boost on the second dw+ shift. Letting go of the forward button as quickly as you need to pull this off is what I'm not getting. It's simple, I know what my problem is and how to correct it, but my fingers won't listen to me. the bastards!
Its a shame that you can't play a race in slow motion to get it down... it's all or nothing. Full speed learning curve.
i can get the double boost to work most of the time which is all you really need on the desert map, but when you need triple or continous boost (like zoomtown) i end up trying too hard and tapping the wall.
plus with these karts i am not convinced that alot of the higher level techniques are needed except to shave the final second or two off your time, ie i can get a 2:01 with normal drifting on pyrimad and 1:59 (ok only one time ;_;) with double boost.

I am wondering about something: when you start the race, how do you get that 'boost'? Whenever I start I slowly go up to a speed, while all the other racers get this yellow flame from the 'thrusters' in the back and start really quickly? Also, it might be my imagination, but I can swear in those videos the people are using nitro (or some sort of yellow boost thing) on the straight runs before they're actual nitro meter is full?
Finally, which is better, the Korean or Chinese version? Because the English version..well, it's not that great >.<....do you need some sort of identification for Korean or Chinese version?

the americn version is just a beta, the korean and chinese versions are pretty much identical and have everything. i am assuming that once the full international verison goes live it will have all the traccks and karts.
as for how to get the boost at the start simply don't press up untill the word start appears, if you time it right you get a boost.
Also you can get a boost anytime you do a drift by simply pressing up again 1 second or less after the end of a drift.
that video will show you the fingering to do for the basic drift.
Well, actually, if you noticed during patching, I saw when it was updating the maps directory, there were names like 'Pirate', etc., so they probably will come as a big update once the closed beta begins :D
Considering I might have just lost around 40 liquibet places to KR, I might as well make my first post now...I've followed Kart Rider for a while now, but aside from a very brief stint in PopKart (I didn't even learn how to drift) I've been playing KR since closed beta started, and I can stay competitive with the best racers in american right now. My two biggest tips off the top of my head are:
1) Abuse the fact that you can restart a time trial for no cost as long as you haven't finished all the laps, and that there's no time limit. In short, use time trial to practice pretty much everything, from track strats to advanced techniques.
2) Learn how to perfect drift (aka best drift, or most efficient drift) the majority of the turns on your track(s) of choice. It's pretty much required for the more advanced techniques, like double boost and continuous boost, to be effective. Also, you'll see a dramatic decrease in your average times.
Also, I've got a hunch that Lurker is rekrul in disguise.

How do you judge what a perfect drift is? I prefer the burst kart, but I can't figure out when I should be starting/ending my drifts to maximize efficiency.

If you look at the tracks made by your kart as you drift, you will notice that the tracks will converge through the drift until they touch, then diverge in the opposite direction. From the point at which the tracks touch onwards, the drift will not increase your no2 bar. You want to avoid this happening if you can, as it slows you down without giving you no2. So, the "perfect drift" involves starting a drift around a turn at the right time and at the right angle, so that your kart remains close to the wall but your tracks do not touch during the drift. You'll have to determine where to start drifting and what angle to approach for each turn in a given track. Here's three videos that might help - the first two explain the concept of perfect drifting, while the last shows someone running Freeway with no advanced techniques except perfect drifts (though I'm still uncertain whether her boost placement during the straight is the fastest way).
Strategies for playing with laggers? Anyone have ideas?
I just got out of a game where one of the better players was a lagger, so for all 3 laps on Pyramid Mesa it looked like he was both behind me and in front of me simultaneously. After the 5th race, and the 4th time he put me into a wall, I decided I couldn't stand to play with him anymore and left. Usually, laggers aren't that great (or they're really great) so it's bad the first lap, but the second and third laps are clear sailing. But occasionally there'll be some bad lag from someone about the same speed I am, and it's just awful.
And your character reacts to what's on the screen, so the lagger can be a kart's length in front of you, but if his lag causes him to teleport into you, you do a 180-- or if he's behind you on your screen, but really closer, he'll have a sudden speed boost on a turn and knock you into a wall... as if he'd used a "magnet," except he doesn't get screwed over along with you.
Anywho... anyone have any strategies for playing vs laggers? Are there any driving techniques that seem to work well vs them and keep you competitive? I've noticed that little bumps don't screw me so bad if I'm performing a perfect drift rather than a tight corner, but it's not 100%. If I ever figure out how to double boost consistantly, I'll report on the effectiveness of that.

There isn't much you can do other than to stay AWAY from them and to make safe drifts

that guy's time was pretty bad, zoom isnt so much a drift map, i drift only 2 corners on it and get about 2:28~ secs however mesa is pretty much an all drift map.
