With Nintendo ensuring that its supply can meet the inevitable demand, it looks like all signs are pointing towards the Switch's successor continuing the Switch's reign, through 2025 and perhaps beyond that, and leaving PlayStation and Xbox in the dust.
Component Shortage No Longer An Issue For Switch Successor, Says Nintendo
In a translation via IGN, Furukawa stated the following: “Although we were unable to produce sufficient quantities of Nintendo Switch hardware last year and the year before due to a shortage of semiconductor components, this situation has now been resolved. At this time, we do not believe that the shortage of components will have a significant impact on the production of the successor model.”
This is certainly good news, then, for those hoping to pick up the console on day one (whenever that is). If there's one thing that defined the launch of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X in 2020, it's that nobody could get their hands on the darn things for months at a time, with fresh restocks being swiped by customers (and scalpers) in as little as a few minutes.
If Nintendo can produce enough units of the Switch successor to meet demand and supplement this with a strong launch lineup of games, then we suspect the company will be off to a good start. https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2024/07/component-shortage-no-longer-an-issue-for-switch-successor-says-nintendo

It's not a given that MS is going to stay in the console market. Though they are big enough that they could do it a la the surface. The Switch is the only console that offers something that is not easily switched with a PC.

There was a Nintendo eshop sale a few weeks ago and I was looking for a new game so I checked out DarkPlasmaBall's list and focused on games that were S Rank. I already had a few of them and I have also been interested in the Octopath Traveler games. Unfortunately, I never see the original Octopath Traveler on sale but I always see Octopath Traveler II discounted here and there. I just saw that they have an Octopath Traveler + Octopath Traveler II bundle so I might splurge and get that in the future.
I also saw that Dragon Quest XI S: Definitive Edition was ranked really high on DarkPlasmaBall's list (basically ranked 4 after Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda ToTK/BoTW) so I did some research and many people recommended DQ XI as a perfect Dragon Quest game for someone to play if they've never played any of the prior Dragon Quest games. Beatemups and Kotaku on YouTube spoke very highly of this game. I've never played a Dragon Quest game in my life so this whole series was new to me. The only RPGs that I remember finishing from beginning to end are FFIX, Golden Sun 1&2 and Elder Scrolls Oblivion.
I am about 20 hours in and this game is amazing. It is also incredibly addictive. One reviewer had also mentioned that this is the perfect game just to play 30 minutes before bed and I agree 100%. The open world map is full of places to save (campsites & churches) and even when you play for 10-15 minutes, you feel like you are progressing whether that is looking for loot, crafting equipment, fighting monsters, exploring the world/cities or even going further in the story.
I just love everything about this game. Once I beat the game, I plan on writing a review. That will probably take a few more weeks because DQ XI is not a short RPG. It seems to be about 80-120 hours depending on if you are doing only the main story or including side quests/exploration. This game is something else and I'm excited to play this game for 50+ more hours. Sometimes you play a game and you just want to finish it for the sake of completing the game but so far, I have never felt like I need to rush the story to reach the end of the game so I can move on to another game. This is one of those games where you enjoy the whole experience of playing the game.
Also, thanks to DarkPlamaBall for putting together his Nintendo Switch tier list! I don't know if I would've bought Dragon Quest XI S if it wasn't for his recommendations.

Let's see if Nintendo uses their resources and vast legal experience to crush someone who is not doing anything illegal.
Nintendo's record of game preservation is poor. Thus, I favour emulation development. In a great many countries emulation is legal.
Some good news: Borderlands 3 got a patch. It improves BOTH visuals and performance substantially. The game has gone from acceptable graphics and performance to above average. I am impressed by the support of Borderlands3.
It is incredible watching developers milk every ounce of computational power out of the Nintendo Switch.

Yay! I'm glad you're enjoying DQ XI I had the same experience as you - I had never played a Dragon Quest game before XI, and it absolutely won me over in essentially every way possible!
On a completely separate note, I was bored and started to compare the popularity of PS4 and PS5 games (2013-2024) with Switch games (2017-2024). Despite Nintendo's Switch only being around for 7-8 years, compared to the 11-12 combined years of Sony's PS4 and PS5, Nintendo has been significantly outselling Sony. My guess is because of the significant overlap and dilution between Sony and PC (and Xbox, although Microsoft is far less relevant) games, whereas Nintendo has generally had the most unique consoles with the most unique franchises that are less likely to be available on other platforms.
These lists are extremely telling, assuming they get regularly updated: PS5: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PlayStation_5_video_games PS4: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PlayStation_4_video_games Switch: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_Nintendo_Switch_video_games

DQ is not one of my favorite franchises but I did enjoy 11. I played the original version on PC. Are you guys playing on 3d or 2d mode?
I'm looking forward to the DQ1-3 remakes in the Octopath Traveler style.

Me too!
I played XI on the 3D mode. I didn't really spend much time with the 2D mode - not because it was bad, but because I just liked the 3D mode even more.

Been playing Hogwarts Legacy. The story, characters, voice acting, and visuals are all amazing. I’ve got to be 10+ hours in and I’d rate this “S” class so far. I play while my 7 and 4 year old watch and they are loving it too. Performance has been pretty solid even for the switch.

That's good to know! I still haven't picked up the Harry Potter game yet, primarily because I just don't have the time.

Is that Hogwarts legacy or a different game? Tried google and only found legacy not castle :/
If its legacy i can vouch for that on the pc. Amazing game really. One of the very few that compeled me to write a review on steam.
If its anywhere close to the pc version, then the switch version should also be great.

I assume BisuDagger meant Hogwarts Legacy. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying it too!

It captures so much of what made us love the movies and books. Everything everywhere feels absolutely alive with magic. The graphics for the switch are toned down, but it’s a programming marvel in itself that it can run on that system .

Parents and women/girls love the Switch. my wife, her sister and her 2 daughters own a total of 6 Switch devices. the PS4 and PS5 are more like your traditional male-centric consoles such as Genesis, PS1, PS2, Atari 2600, etc etc.
my wife and her sister are frighteningly good at "Don't Starve Together" and "Cult of the Lamb" on the Switch

I personally wasn't a big fan of Hogwarts Legacy. I played it on the PS5 so the graphics were super. But the story and the gameplay, the combat especially, were average at best. You need to be a BIG harry potter fan to look past the mediocrity and actually enjoy the game imo.
Some bonus points for trying to cater to the completionists among us (me included), but spamming Revelio every 5 meters to find invisible scrolls ain't it.
Honestly a bit surprised to see you say the story is amazing, Bisudagger, I'm interested to hear if your opinion changes on that front later in the game.
e: not including Quidditch because they were developping a stand-alone Quidditch game alongside it is pretty criminal as well. Even the shitty old PC games had some form of Quidditch.

I am shocked that they got Hogwarts Legacy to work on the Nintendo Switch even with a lower resolution. I thought it would become one of those ports that get announced but end up cancelled like Final Fantasy XV, Marvel Midnight Suns, Robocop etc.
I've read all the Harry Potter books and seen the movies but one main complaint about the game is that it lacks a morality system. Supposedly, you can spam Avada Kedavra without any in-game repercussions. I could be wrong about this because I have not played the game. I just searched on Google and it seems that originally it did have some type of morality/reputation system but it was cut from the final product.
A major aspect of the Harry Potter story was Harry's moral compass and not resorting to forbidden spells like Voldermort and the death eaters etc. It would be weird if I could just cast one of the unforgivable curses at will and I'd still be treated like a good wizard in the world of Hogwarts Legacy. I kinda expect some type of system similar to a D&D morality system. Lawful Good, Neutral, Evil etc depending on one's actions within Hogwarts Legacy and how you deal with enemies/quests. KOTOR and Mass effect are good examples of including some type of morality system.
If I did play Hogwarts Legacy, I might lean towards playing it on my PC, not the Switch because of the graphics.
The fact that they don't have Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy is confusing. Quidditch is a big part of Hogwarts. It is like playing a Star Wars game set in the time of Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine and it doesn't have some form of Pod racing.

You can learn and use all 3 unforgivable curses. It's been a while since I played but I don't think this has any negative consequences other than potentially some disapproving dialogue from your classmates. Learning them is optional though, you can choose for yourself if you wanna go down that route or not.
I highly recommend doing so, because the curses is the one redeeming aspect of the combat system. Each enemy struck by a curse gets a 'cursed' tag for a while, and when you spend a talent point in Avada Kedavra it can gain a passive 'kills the target and all other cursed mobs' which is pretty cool. Crucio/Imperio everything and then cast 1 killing curse to kill them all.
This is useful because the game almost always puts you against multiple opponents. Because of the way the combat system works, there is 0 challenge in a 1v1, 1v2 or even 1v3 fight, so all the difficulty comes from pitting 10+ mobs vs you at once, which of course gets a bit boring after a while.

I play with my 7 and 4 year old watching. So seeing their enthusiasm during conversations and cut scenes definitely adds to the hype while playing the game. They haven’t seen any Harry Potter movies so it’s definitely new to them too. I do think the voice acting and dialog versus reading text for conversations is really well done.
Regarding combat, I think there is a ton of potential in the combat system for the next game they make. I love the d-directional micro to switch spell sets mid combat to do different attack styles is really cool and the battle arena areas are really fun. I like the one giant boss with mobs flow where you are focusing down an ogre while doing perfect dodge and deflection against all the random unseen attacks.
As for the lack of quidditch, it’s a slight bummer sure, but the broom flying, courses, and upgrade missions are still enjoyable.

i am surprised they got Borderlands3 looking decent and running consistently at 30FPS even during big fights. i boldly predicted Borderlands3 would never come to the Switch after they released Borderlands 2 on the system. LOL.
I shake my head when I play the latest patch of Borderlands3 on the Switch. Its unbelievable.
It is really cool what talented software engineers can do to milk an aging system for every ounce of power. Its like we're at the same stage with the Switch as when the SNES got Doom or when the Atari 2600 got Pitfall 2. Games this sophisticated were thought impossible when the system first released.

Are we sure that Switch 2 will have Switch 1 games as part of its library? Historically Nintendo doesn't always support that. Am considering getting one of them to catch up on the backlog of games since I gave my original switch away.

As a mathematician, I can't in good faith claim 100% certainty on that, but Nintendo actually does have a very good track record of supporting backwards compatibility! Most of their systems are backwards compatible by 1 generation. If you look at the transitions from Game Boy -> Pocket -> Color -> Advance -> the whole DS family, the progression of nearly all handheld hardware was exceptional in terms of preserving recent years of games. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that GameCube -> Wii was backwards compatible, and Wii -> Wii U was too. I think the only times where backwards compatibility didn't really happen is when it literally couldn't because of the extreme changes in software formats (significantly different/primitive cartridges, or transitioning from cartridge to disc and vice-versa: NES/SNES/N64/GCN and then Wii U / Switch). I think it is very likely that the next console will be similar to the Switch, and therefore I'm very confident that the console will be backwards compatible. I could be wrong though, and there's no harm in getting a Switch now anyway, to work on that backlog
