It was reiterated multiple times - including today - that tomorrow's Nintendo Direct will not have any information on the next-gen Nintendo console. Personally, I'm expecting a few more remastered titles and a general coasting through the end of 2024, with a bunch of decent, mid-level fun games. 40 minutes is a lot of time to fill though, so maybe we'll get some really cool surprises. I can't imagine we'll get any huge news about an upcoming, groundbreaking, blockbuster first-party franchise, but I'd love to be wrong! I was so wrong, in the best way possible. Games from the Nintendo Direct that look awesome to me: Mario & Luigi: Brothership – November 7, 2024 Fantasian Neo Dimension – Holiday Season, 2024 MIO Memories In Orbit – 2025 Farmagia – November 1, 2024 Donkey Kong Country Returns HD – January 16, 2025 Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake – November 14, 2024 Dragon Quest I and II HD-2D Remakes – 2025 Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD – June 27, 2024 The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom – September 26, 2024 Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge Of The Seven – October 24, 2024 Metroid Prime 4 Beyond – 2025 New Nintendo Switch Online games

Over the years I've play the Super Mega Baseball series against people within 1000 KM of where I am and lag is a non issue. https://www.nintendo.com/en-ca/store/products/super-mega-baseball-4-switch/ I highly suspect lag screws up the pitching//hitting aspect of the game from greater distances though. If you intend to play against someone on the other side of a continent or world... I can almost certainly guarantee you won't be happy. I omitted the fact that EA is the publisher of Super Mega Baseball 4. Until this version EA was NOT the publisher. Every EA Sports title has a "loot box"//"random player card pack" system for adding new players to the team you are building. You can earn these via game play or by paying $$$. EA's European Football title has core team building built around money microtransactions; EA makes more money from loot boxes//Card Packs in Football than they do selling the base game. However, Super Mega Baseball 4 does not have a Loot Box//Card Pack system. There are no microtransactions in the game. You can purchase 3 additional baseball parks. It is interesting to see that EA maintained the spirit of the game and did not tack on a Loot Box system. I think most people who love the series will stop buying the game if EA adds Loot Boxes. It is impressive that EA's marketing//revenue team figured that out. This EA Sports Game is the unusual exception where adding loot boxes would lower revenue.

Is it fair to say that these microtransactions promote a pay-to-win style with these EA sports games? Or are they purely cosmetic and don't affect gameplay/competition?

You will acquire some 'card packs' by paying $$$ or playing some games. A card will have say a 1 in 200 chance of being a really good player that will make your team better. People who play the game a lot and pay extra $$$ will have faster/better players. The EA Sports games of the 90s and early 2000s did not have these mechanics. I think EA's #1 sports game is their annual soccer/football title and I think EA sells more than $1 Billion in card packs each year for that game.

Pretty scummy in a competitive multiplayer environment.

So consumers do have a choice between baseball games with and without micro transactions. Super Mega Baseball 4 has a really good 'pick up and play' initial set up. Any one with a few months of previous baseball game playing experience can instantly have fun; the games can be done in less than 15 minutes.
